I understand why you like the Caravan I just received one. It is very versatile and what a broad warm tone I’m enjoying playing it! I find it loud enough
Thanks for sharing this! I just got an 1872 Buffet Crampon soprano whose original mouthpiece is destroyed, so I'm shopping for a new one. An expert has recommended the Caravan to me as a modern large-chamber mouthpiece compatible with such an older sax. Your demo convinces me that this is definitely the right choice: a lovely, refined, musical, "good-ol'-days" sound!
I feel that the Caravan mouthpiece gave the best color it has a real classic sound. You have a great set of chops, I use the Selmer C* with a Vandoren V16 3 1/2 Reed on my Yani SC S991 which gives me great control and intonanation across the horn
I have to agree, the Caravan is very sweet and round sounding in comparison with the rest. Its more like a chocolate cake: thick, full, and savory, with some thick icing on the top and little sprinkles and nuances on the outside!
I play a Caravan on soprano as well. One alternative to the Caravan is the Ralph Morgan classical series. The Caravan soprano tip opening is about 1.12mm; the Morgan 1C is 1.04mm, and the 2C is 1.14mm (other facing choices as well). I have a Selmer Concept as well, but I find it a bit harsh.
Selmer Concept for me (sounded like a faster response and purer tone), but the Caravan was also quite nice. I'm probably going to buy a Concept next month or something.
I preferred the Vandoren. The Ron Caravan to my ears sounded thin and constricted, not open and clear and the pad closure made a sound , not made on playing of the other two
I play Vandoren optimun Sl 4, in my soprano selmer sa 80 series 2, and its the best mounthpiece for classic sound, and you play a Sl 3, and the range of the sound its very good. I see a masterclass of Jean Denis Michat, and uses Vandoren mounthpieces and are the same opinion . . .thanks for your video...
Selmer for those who have to listen for a long time. Rousseau was really bright and a little more open. Vandoren was just out there and aggressive... Did I miss something on this? I also thought the response by Selmer was better
Thanks for this video. Great comparison!

0:51 / 1:04 - Ron Caravan
1:51 / 2:05 - Selmer Concept
2:59 / 3:12 - Rousseau New Classic NC4
4:23 / 4:36 - Vandoren Optimum SL3
Thanks a lot, guy.
thanks

Thanks for your kind words! It sounds like the Caravan would be a great option for you. Let me know how it goes!
Thanks for the comparison! I was thinking of a few of the mouthpieces you tested and this helped me narrow it down!
Ron Caravan is the best for my ears. It is warmer, and "rounder" than the others.
Caravan "moves me", beautiful playing.
I vote for the Selmer. Nice projection w/o being strident. Nice round upper register w/o sacrificing mid-range. Thank you for the test.

Great Sound! I like Concept among those!

The Caravan sounds sweeter, less aggressive to me.

Michat was using a Concept on soprano in early 2019. Look for the Vivaldi performance on TH-cam.
i vote for the caravan 2nd the optimum
The Rousseau is rather nice- could work for jazz too ! Wow !
You play great, sir! SELMER CONCEPT FTW! LoL
Very helpful video. Thanks.
I use a caravan, vandoren(blue box) 4 reed on a straight Yanagisawa s991, with a curved neck. Try it with that setup.

I think you're right on. I've actually been playing on the Selmer exclusively since I made that video!
The Selmer- for my ears- no contest-sounds easier to play music with-broader dynamic range. It´s all subjective-
you sound wonderful on all of them!
Caravan 4 me
very good only lacked Selmer s80
I have a caravan for my alto that I got in 1981.
What is the shape of the throat on the Caravan compared to the Selmer concept?
Selmer concept sounds perfect for me!
have you tried the rascher?
Selmer Concept sound the best.
C* is a SIZE, not a type. You're talking about the Selmer S80.
C* is a tip opening. The mouthpiece I referenced is an S80 C*.
Err... you do realize you're just rewording my comment, right? Like I said, C* is not a type. People should stip referring to it as one.
Selmer C* was the name of the mouthpiece for a long time before they came out with the S80.
My recollection is that the S80 came out with the Selmer MkVII in the late 70's.
