I was there that day. rode my stringray bike from 47th and ortega street up to sutro's. my dad a retired police inspector arrested the kid--maggot batch. he and his sister started the fire. most people don't know that piece of history. what a great loss to this city. we have little left with playland gone-the zoo a disaster--the park is not how it used to be. great memories though!
And it’s sad to think that just 6 years later Playland at the Beach would be demolished. With the closing of the Cliff House, nothing remains of that wonderful era
I was riding my string ray bike, that june 26th day-1966, and saw the smoke from sutro bath's and rode my bike up there, and watched it burn down. my dad, a retired police inspector arrested the kid who set the fire.
I was the last person to have swam in Sutro Baths in 1953. There were news photographers there that day that took pictures of us kids swimming in the pools. Does anyone happen to know where I could find those pics?

It is likely that, were it arson, the damning evidence would be destroyed along with the target structure; San Francisco Police hadn't the evidence to pin the fire on then-convict Magid Bateh, who was previously found guilty of arson in the Jefferson Elementary School fire of 1959.

It was my fave place to go as a kid. I loved the telescopes up above the ice rink. That area was filmed in the movie 'The Lineup.'
