  • ‪@WaybackRewind‬ U-Matic was the World's First Video Cassette Recorder (VCR). Created for the home market in 1971 it was a dismal failure. Sony immediately started development of Betamax which met with much more initial success.
But U-Matic would re-invent itself as a professional format for industry and broadcast television. It was a dramatic improvement over 2 inch quad in terms of size and usability. The addition of a smaller cassette for electronic news gathering even further solidified it's domination of the TV market for 3 decades. Working players are no longer in TV stations and it is now one of the more obscure formats. But enjoy this trip back to the 70s.

I have a SONY BVU-150P U-MATIC Portable (and a few tapes) in my closet that hasn't seen power for 20 years; I keep it around for its historical significance. I also have a big honking Sony ENG camera that goes with it.

Nice! I have a VO-8800 that I will try to power up next and see if it still works. These older units are like tanks compared to the 90s equipment, which largely none of it still works.
The BVU series were higher quality, considered broadcast quality. The VO series were not but still quite good for the time.
      Thanks for sharing.

@@WaybackRewind Another reason I kept my U-matic was for its video recording's unique look that's not easily replicated digitally.
I'll have to revisit your older videos on going tapeless - I have a Sony VX-2100 that I've always wanted to go tapeless but I could never justify the cost, the downside to that is that it becomes another piece of gear that's collecting dust and never gets used.

@@MichaelAChang Thank-you. I am working on a tapeless video for my Canon Xl1S so there will be a fresh one for you soon.

I have 2 2600 I got from a station. I wanted to transfer my tapes. They are still in tact but won't show video. Hope to get them sold

Sorry that yours don't work. I think I have another U-Matic somewhere. At one time I had three and I don't remember what happened to them. They weigh a ton so it's not likely I moved them anywhere. I don't have any tapes that need transferring, mine are all random movie trailers.
