    I always take it as I love dubs. I love subs. This goes for Godzilla, anime, other Japanese films and shows, French films and show, whatever.
    Like you said, translation is always imperfect. Even when going to closely related languages like Italian and Spanish, some things are imperfect. Going from vastly different languages like Japanese and English, the differences are even greater. Heck, a modern English speaker reading Shakespeare can benefit from some help, and _they are the same language._
    All that is to say, dubs give me a window into what is being said, subs give me another window. Using both, I can get a better (but still imperfect) understanding of a work.

    I saw the film in theaters where it was subtitles only, and then watched in english Dubbed when it released on Netflix. Comparing to all the other Japanese Godzilla Films that were dubbed, I think this Film had the best dubbing out of most, if not all of them. I think for this movie, the English voice actors did their best to be spot on with the original actors voice tones and emotional reactions. Yes there were some areas where they could have been better. And the English Dialogue were kept very close to what the original actors said (according to the original Japanese Subtitles in theaters). With only a few minor changes to what was actually said. Some of the dialogue changes I didn't mind. And some were said best in the original Japanese Dialogue. I'm very glad they kept the little girl Akiko's cries the same. From what I heard in both versions, they didn't try to dub her it over.
    So again. I think this is probably the best dubbing for any Japanese Godzilla film I've seen. And there have been some bad ones I have to admit. Especially ones with actors who were speaking English in the original Japanese dialogue. Their voices were dubbed over too with even worse voice actors. I was left like, "Why did they bother dubbing over the original actor's voice? He's already speaking english." And there are ones that when they dubbed the movie in English, the sound quality is very suppressed. Godzilla Vs Biollante was 1.0 Dolby Digital. It was very quiet. You switched that format in the blu ray menu to the original Japanese Format without changing your volume, and it is loud as hell.
    Overall I'm happy the way this movie turned out. Both Japanese and English Dubbed. I hope they provide both versions in the DVD/Blu Ray Release. And hopefully that's soon.

    Before watching your review, personally felt that it was serviceable but the performance could have been better and I noticed that they didn’t even try to sync up the words with the mouth (which i understand is difficult but a movie of such acclaim deserves the effort no?) it had its moments but ultimately Japanese is the best experience for the movie.

I can't count how many times i clicked on a TH-cam video of an anime scene that's clearly titled (DUB) and still found people in the comments complaining about it. No, what ruins a movie is having to stare at the bottom of the screen reading and missing the entire movie. Might as well just download the script and read that. The English dub is really good. And as an English speaker who doesn’t understand Japanese, it’s the ONLY way to watch the film. Japanese speakers don’t have to read it, why should I? The entire point of dubs is so people that don’t speak the original language can enjoy the film the same way the original audience did (by understanding what’s being said).

    I like minus one. I had no real problem with the english dub except for the last line. I will respectfully disagree with you on that. I feel the last line's poignancy was diminished by having Noriko seemingly complain in her request that he get over his PTSD (without saying it directly). Where, to me, the original dub is filled with caring and asking him if the war inside him is over. Showing her intuitive side as it were.

    I have watched it twice, first dubbed and then in Japanese. Preferred the Japanese language much more. The dubbed version, at least to me, lacked emotion. It sounded too Hollywood. When the dubbed movie ended, my thought was 'You know, that was quite good!' When the Japanese version ended, it felt like an emotional gut punch and then came the waterworks, in spite of the fact that I already knew what was coming.

    I have a friend and co-worker who refuses to watch any foreign film in its native language with English subtitles. He watched the English dub of "Godzilla: Minus One" and didn't at all like it. Go figure. For the most part, I liked the English dub of "G:M1" and lemme tell ya, it's certainly above the par you find in the Heisei, Millennium films or the Netflix "Godzilla" Monster Planet" anime trilogy, "Godzilla: Singular Point" and Shin Goji. There was little to no "lip flap" and the majority of voice actors were suitable matches for their characters. It wasn't perfect, but at no time watching it, was I jarred out of the movie because of false notes. Here's something for the naysayers to think carefully about... Given their limited financial resources, Toho don't have the money to hire "A" or even "B" list North American talent to do voice overs they way Miramax did with their perfect dub of "Princess Mononoke" and later, what Disney accomplished with the rest of Hayao Miyazkaki's films when they obtained the rights to them. The only way you're gonna get the same levels of vocal performance as is in the Japanese original, is to hire performers of that calibre. That said, this dub version (with the notes you made, Derek) is just fine in my book.

    • @DMan1954
      @DMan1954  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fair enough! I do agree that some of these films could benefit from a stronger dub cast who is on a higher level. Although I would worry it would become jarring if people recognized the voice actors, the way it was for me with Mike from Skull Island fighting Godzilla here.

    Thank you for an excellent and balanced analysis. Frankly, I was hesitant when I saw the title, but as usual, great job. One thought is that if it draws new viewers to the movie, it's a win.
    As for the dubbing of Shin Godzilla, it is possible that dubbing adds to the detached nature of the government. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it. 😂

    I'm a Japanese. When we watch English movies. we can choose dubed one one with subtitle. Dubed one is more correct because voice actor can speak fast. On the other hand, subtile has a limitation which is the numuber of letters, and of time. It means that subtitle is less correct than dub. But instead we can enjoy original voices. So recently I make it a rule to watch in both ways. It's my recommendation in case of G -1.0. Besides ,as you know, G -1.0 has -color version (maybe soon). You can enjoy G -1.0 in four ways totally. How happy you are!!

    For me, I have a firm belief in experiencing the movie in its original form. Especially one like this, that had exceptional acting. Dubs, for the most part, just don't capture the original heart and soul each actor/actress put into a movie.
    The most common issue of dubs and voice acting in general, is that the actors doing so have a hard time letting go of their ego, which causes their lines to sound forced or just plain terribly executed (Lion King 2019 is a good example).

    English subtitles naturally lack details that could not be presented due to the limited space and time available, but that is normal for subtitles. As with any subtitled movie, the original is better, but the Godzilla subtitles were adequate in conveying the story to the point that people were in tears. I watched the movie in Japanese as it is my mother tongue and later saw the dubbed version. It looked fine but as others wrote, folks like to complain.

    It's a balancing act, and there is no such thing as 100% accurate translation. As for the Japanese inflection in certain words, I can take them or leave them. At best, you don't really notice it; at worst, it's like a record scratch; you can't help but notice it. I remember when the AKIRA Blu-ray was released, and the new dub referred to Kaneda as Canada, which was jarring. The Spanish dub was better, but the screaming parts are where it falters hard. One of the best English dubs I've ever heard was in Jin-Roh, as that movie was theatrical and emotional, and I give them credit for stepping up to the occasion.

    Lol the dub was like any other. Cartoony anime voice acting that completely eliminates the actual perfomances from the actors. How anyone can warp that criticism into "people just complaining for the sake of complaining" is embarrassing. Great video

  • @BabystarNoodle

    Since the Japanese language, especially Kanji, is ideographic, the meaning can be captured with a single glance. On the other hand, English is phonetic, so it takes time to read it, and I think the subtitled version is at a slight disadvantage. It would be meaningless if you miss the important images, so I hope you will enjoy the dubbed version as well.

    English dubs, regardless of how good they are always ruin a good foreign film. There's no way the actor's real acting can come through and words are often changed to come closer to matching the mouth movements. If you're too lazy to read subtitles then stick to American and/or British movies.

    • @DMan1954
      @DMan1954  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not about laziness. Some people need an option like this.

    • @sussudioharvey9458
      @sussudioharvey9458 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well a lot of us older folks are visually impaired so do appreciate the option. And some people just don’t like having to read as it takes away from the visual since busy reading.
      Having both options are good… it brings more people to experience the movie. Imagine if that had been an option in movie theaters. Some Dubbed showings held at certain times. It definitely would have increased box office numbers.

    The english dub for this is pretty good. I did have a couple nitpicks about the Doc's voice being too deep, and the Captain's voice could have been more older and gruff sounding. But that's just me. Other than that I think the cast did a fantastic job.
    As for Noriko's ending line... it's basically the same meaning. So it didn't bother me. Dubbing in live action is rather tricky... gotta match the actor's lip movements and body language and make it all sound natural. A little change in the dialogue is okay so long as it has the same meaning as the original language intended, and matches the character's lip movements. Most importantly... gotta have good voice actors.

    All dubs ruin movies even if they're well acted. It's crazy to me that people are so lazy about having to read (god forbid) that they choose instead to not even hear the original actors' performances and experience the lines as they were originally delivered. It turns the whole acting aspect of movies into a cheap imitation of the real thing. I don't mind people having that option, but it really is a terrible way to experience foreign films.
