    So glad to see you loved Agatha!!! Murder On The Orient Express (and every one of the Poirot series tbh) is really fun, but if you want some more stand-alone bangers, I highly recommend Crooked House and The Pale Horse - both are so creepy and perfect for this time of year!

    About Agatha Christie... race actually played a way bigger role in the original story which was later edited out along with the changing of the title. I don't remember all the details but Is This Just Fantasy? made a great video about it called "Crime and colonialism: Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None" if you're interested :)

    about the agatha christie thing: what i usually do for problematic authors is, if they are dead at least my money wont go directly to them anymore so i fell ok with buying their books. if they are still alive i dont buy their books new, if i really want to read them i buy them second hand. for ex i stopped buying anything harry potter related new, if there's an edition i really love (because im still attached to the story) i look for it second hand

    Regarding Agatha Christie - she wrote at a time when race sensitivity did not exist. So she didn't realize she would be stepping on toes decades later. Most of her books and characters are worthy of praise. Happy reading 😊

    • @myweakness1883
      @myweakness1883 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +46

      I'm not a fan of this argument when it's used to discourage pointing these things out. Besides, there were folks who didn't have to be told racism is bad and managed to figure it out way before Agatha Christie started writing. What about Harriet Beecher Stowe for example? Her work came out when slavery was still a thing.
      Sorry but British authors have a pattern of being, let's say, insensitive, which makes sense since they were one of the colonizing countries lol
      And this is partly why saying "nah it's fine because race sensitivity wasn't a thing back then" is kind of missing the point

    • @jessicaguerrero6905
      @jessicaguerrero6905 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@myweakness1883I feel like their comment wasn’t an argument to discourage anyone from pointing out anything. Nor was it saying that anything is fine about wrongful views. It literally just reiterated what Bella said about separating the author and their works, especially authors who have long passed. Which I assume most people do because Agatha Christie’s books still continue to sell and get special editions.

    • @sonja2552
      @sonja2552 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      Hi! History teacher here and wanted to share my two cents on the issue. I can understand both points of view. When judging a person's morality, I think we should take the historical context into account (to some degree), because a person's morality is shaped by their culture and the way they were raised. I also think that when talking about the past, instead of judging an individual person's morals, we should focus more on the social structures and culture in general. We should read about the history of racism, for example, to be able to understand how it came to be and thus, how to stand up against it better. I think this is more productive than focusing on condemning individuals. That being said, I think there is no harm in pointing out the problematic parts about Christie's work.

    • @DrawtheCurtains
      @DrawtheCurtains 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@myweakness1883Your logic is backwards. Sure, there have always been staunch anti-racists, but how long has thinking inclusively truly been the norm-50-some years, maybe 60 if you're being generous? Judging a one hundred year old story (her first novel released in 1920 IIRC) or even the author herself (born in... what, 1870?) using the norms we have adapted comparatively recently is only asking to hurt your own feelings. Pointing them out is fine, and I'm sure most people would notice it regardless, but it makes no sense to get bent out of shape about it the way you would if it was in a text released today.

    Don't worry too much about Agatha's writing style. The language was different at the time she wrote her novels. Lots of expressions which would be offensive today were used on a daily base and no one was hurt. I think that comparing today's authors with authors from earlier times is like comparing apples with bananas. My advice is: Just take it as a part of history and enjoy her novels. I personally found it interesting how the english language evolved over time.

    But also, my And Then There Were None was before the ending was changed, so the message of the story was also totally changed in newer versions.

    Regarding Junji ito: the books being published one after another now is because he got really popular and the publishers decided to speed run everything he had out already for a while in Japan. The short story collections being put together with other short stories that were published in other short story collections is also a decision made by the English publishers and not really related 1:1 to stuff he’s creating now.

    Im also reading agatha christie. After reading a couple of it and reading all of sherlock holmes it's only fair to read all of agatha's (in publishing order bc it seems the easiest way). But i dont believe in separating the work from the author is even posible, their believes are there, you just wont get it or miss it bc you wont be prepared for it. That is if they are sutil enough, of course. For example, in sherlock they were so obvious you just couldnt ignore it ksks😅😢
    P.s: I'm not actually reading all of them yet bc I don't have all, I'm reading the ones I already bought in publication order and then as I buy more I will keep doing that.

    You know what Bella? The book the last of word really happened. I don't know if the book is an adaption of it but a girl gave a book a 1 star and the author tracked her down and tried to kill her.

    About Agatha Christie. It's all a matter of time. Back then, such words and statements were completely normal, and now they aren't because times have changed. It's good. It shows the development of human society♡

      This. History is history, the way it happened. No need to deny it or censure it. Just like how normal it was for pre teen girls to get married and have children. Different times.

    9:34 let me say, I've read a lot of agatha christie and "and then there were none" is a single type of book. She has nothing like it. it is never spooky and it really is not like her so dont say you get it because that book is really different from all her other books haha you need to try her poirrot series since those are the most popular
