I come from the "poor side" of the family. I remember having family members talking like this as I was coming up. It gave me nothing but motivation to be better because if they could why not me; but it made many of my other family members feel like it was a slight to them. I hated it when they made my side of the fam feel bad for having less but now that I'm older I realize some of my family members just refuse to do better and thus are more comfortable in 'struggle' mode which makes me feel like I need to keep any of my wins or successes to myself so that I don't become the "other side" of the family that makes them feel bad for having less😔
