A highly informative video detailing the history of Flash/Animate. I've been a Flash Animator since 2000 and honed my skills in AS2 and AS3. Flash allowed us to bring our creative dreams to life, but regrettably, it was phased out of the industry, affecting a significant number of professionals.

I thrived as a Flash developer from 1998 through 2011 working in the casual gaming industry (casino/lottery). I saw Flash evolve from a simple tool capable of producing static animated bling all the way through to a powerful application platform with available MVC frameworks such as Robotlegs. 2008 to 2010 especially was a great time to be in the Flash game, nothing came close to it. In 2010 after the infamous Apple announcement, I knew it was the beginning of the end. In that first year I did my part to educate ignoramuses in various circles who demonized Flash while claiming HTML5 could do everything Flash could do. It simply wasn't even remotely true. Only until recent years has HTML5/JS/CSS started to match the capabilities of a platform that was more mature 10+ years ago. To me it was obvious Apple ( a big industry influencer) caved on Flash because they were threatened by it, especially in terms of being the app "gatekeeper" (i.e. monetization). Instead they hid behined the idea that it was too slow and insecure. Two things they could have easily worked with Adobe to solve. RIP Flash

    • @GOOB3000
      @GOOB3000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

i agree. adobe reacted to this and solved it with Stage3D (Molehill) It was incredible and years ahead of HTML5 but by then it was too late. The damage had been done.

I too was a flash developer since 1998. And I still think even now they can save Flash (Animate) by giving Apple and Google good stakes in Adobe Animate. Rather than killing it altogether. There is still a huge potential.

Glad to be able to convert my past projects to view on the web and social media. Excited to get going! Your video gave a lot of hope. Flash/Animate is awesome and way easier.

I am just starting. I know hardly anything about making animations. Anyhow, I am creating my products that I am going to sell, and one step forward is marketing - from that, I have zero experience also. But, I decided to create an animation for FB and other social media. I have Creative Clouds, so I decided to start to learn how to use Animate.
I wonder why I did not do animations before? This is fun! The imagination just starts to fly! Also, instantly you start to see the world in different eyes. When I see a dog, I ponder, how would I make its movements look like... This is not learning only technics, this is learning about life, movements, face expressions etc.!
I know nothing about Flash etc. things, so this video was VERY informative and helpful to me in all ways. Thank you very much!

I was teaching at the time Steve Jobs released his open letter about Flash. In class I addressed each point and there was only one point that I couldn't address (Flash crashes more on Macs). I didn't have the stats to determine that. I found it funny as he said that Flash is a mouse technology. The web is a mouse technology. How else do you code a hover event, which doesn't work on mobile. I told my class that it's only a mouse technology if you develop it that way.

Yes, Agree 100%, with you. Actionscript and Flash is still the best dev for complex app, and still using Flash Pro Csy6
A big mistake is to compare HTML5 with Actionscript, HTML5 is NOT an interpreted language. Actionscript is a clean language like Javascript
JS does not cover all Actionscript API like multicast, vector, rtmfp, typing etc...
also Flash API is not only animation, but UI components, super complex application quasi impossible to do it cleanly on JS
Javascrap is HELL to maintain and still slower for a lot of things.
the good news is soon we will get all Flash/Flex API on websassembly.

Adobe Animate does not do what you just did in your video. Adobe does not present a clear and cogent explanation of why one would use one format over another. ActionScript 3.0 provides numerous animation advantages not available in HTML5 canvas, but this is not stated. Thank You for shedding light on the history and reality of this situation.

You were right. Since Jobs didn't have a replacement for Flash , he was selfish in destroying a great platform. I know this comment is rather late . nevertheless .. i would blame adobe for dropping support. not fighting back. Wanna add something here. I used Animate to create APK files. a young Android programmer saw it and asked if this was actually done in Android Studio . I asked him why he felt like that . He said the quality of the images and animations were far better than what could be had from Android Studio. That's when i told him its Flash ( Animate). He then went: Oh!!! Thanx for this Great video !

Great vid - I make short films with my son and I have been learning Animate to add animation/special effects to short films. If this is your end goal, then ActionScript is best and it also allows you to use scenes which I don't think you can with HTML5. Still learning the application but your vid further proves that for me anyway Actionscript is the way to go.

AS3 is used for all mobile apps that are submitted to any App Store. I'm not sure you pointed that out. I've worked on 19 apps in various app stores, all of them were AS3/AIR. That aside, it was a great video.

Hi Colin, Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment. Around 9:10 I have a little mention of AIR and its viability for mobile but I definitely didn't spend a lot of time on it. My focus was more on letting people know that targeting the Flash Player isn't a great idea due to its end of life and lack of presence in browsers. Frankly, I wish I heard more about AIR for mobile from Adobe and the community. I LOVED AS3 and wish more people knew about how great it is.

Whether you use Adobe Animate or do everything in Eclipse based tools to avoid having to pay Adobe, the scripting language is ActionScript 3. Me personally, I use Animate (formally Flash Professional), so my main file is FLA. In general you don't access external SWFs, all of the code is embedded in the FLA, but you can publish to SWC instead of SWF, and embed those in the FLA, allowing you to be modular, and still have a single native IPA or APK.@@tf19518

If you are making an interactive video that plays in your browser the work flow would be; Do all of the artwork/animation in AS3, export those files as videos? Bring the interactivity to life with HTML5 Canvas?
Would it also be safe to say that any kind of button creation and interactivity built in AS3 would be reserved for a flash player, and in the case of my "interactive video scenario" a waste of time?

I would like to develop the online activity to allow them to choose the animals in any order, which would then trigger the appropriate audio to play for each individual animal. Would HTML5 work for this please? Or, is the audio going to be a problem?? Also, there any tutorial that you can recommend??? I have used Flash for years developing SWF files for Splash pages until it became deprecated. Thanks a bunch. The video is very imformative.

Laura Lanoue what you describe can be done with html5 and JavaScript with animate. I don’t have any in depth tutorials but I do have a collection of source files to show how to do common programming tasks in animate with JavaScript. www.creativecodingclub.com/courses/adobe-animate-for-html5

care to convert my AS2 site for me? :) it's not a big site, I just need maybe for it to be made into some kind of template... then I could work on it myself after dissecting it. that's how I got to making my AS2 site, I got a template, dissected it, then know how to build upon it.

I would suggest learning JavaScript or ActionScript 3. ActionScript 2 is no longer supported by Adobe. I have an ActionScript 3.0 intro course here: courses.snorkl.tv/courses/generative-art-with-adobe-animate-as3

Thanks for the video I enjoyed it. I have some files in my portfolio created for the web with ActionScript 2 and 3. Is there a way to convert them using Animate CC to HTM5 files that will play on the web? They're interactive.

I would love to hear about this too! I am trying to convert one game mine made on AS 2.0 to html5 and pratically i will have to build the entire thing from 0. Even the animations will need to be adapted, html5 doesnt support a lot of the features, input fields, shades, alpha filter. I am kinda sad because the game can become inferior compared to his original format.

Great video, thank you for saying all of this. Yes, I literally saw my previous life using web animation Flash before me. Started back in the Macromedia days. I loved the interactivity and made web art pieces. You are totally right. Jobs was completely out of order. Air was a total pain and lots of cool web art/games/UI was left in the desert. Relieved to feel I wasn't the only one who was cheesed off by these developments.

      1) Make sure you are on latest version of Animate. 2) Contact adobe support. - I really don't know why that would be happening. Sorry.

Thanks for watching. If you want your game to run natively in a web browser it must be HTML5. Flash Player is no longer supported in Chrome 😥. Safari ending support soon. Adobe Air which does support AS3 is now maintained by a company called Harman.

Can I use Animate CC 2019 for read/write text files? I know I know... you will say, why you don't use python or similar... but the truth is that I need to read files, then base on that I would be drawing some stuff in the screen, then everything would be visually and interactive (a desktop app), then based on what the user does, write back a file etc... I just wish to do something like that with the benefit of designing the visual part using Flash IDE (Animate).

Thank you for making this excellent video! Many high schools in Norway used flash-as3 in a multimedia development course for high school students. Now it has been mainly, but not totally, replaced by java script, CCS and HTML, or similar languages. I use AS3-with Aniamte CC in my high school for many years and I am so confident that is gives a very effective and solid introduction to the object oriented programming itself. My students learn and master it very quickly and we enjoy making many creative, useful and cool apps.
