Money, Power, Impunity: The Bankers Who Stole The World | 2008 Bank Crisis & Recession Documentary

  • Who are the men who stole the world, and got away with it? The Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs, all Wall Street titans - did they commit the perfect crime? They’re bankers, traders, investment funds executives. Frauds, lies, cons: they forgot all about morality to make money. The entire world had to suffer the consequences of their actions. They impoverished countries, drove millions of workers into unemployment and triggered the rise in extremism.
So who are they? This is a story about money, power and impunity. Ten years after the crisis, tongues finally begin to loosen. This documentary gives a voice to the banksters themselves, their relatives, the former “insiders” with whom they rub shoulders, to those who were in the eye of the storm. Through personal destinies, the film digs into the mechanisms that led them to cross the red line. It investigates what goes through their minds, how they ended up where they are, and how the system used some of them.
Beyond their extraordinary destiny unfolds the History of the downward slide of finance over the last fifteen years and its dramatic consequences for the public. This documentary will also try to answer two specific questions: After the 2008 crisis, were the real culprits condemned? And are such aberrations still possible?
This documentary was first released in 2018.

To be completely honest, what these bankers did was unethical, but NOT illegal. There is a vast difference between unethical and illegal. For as long as all parties win from a situation, its not unethical. In 2000, a law was passed to loosen the financial system, and it did. Everyone made money and everyone lost money.

The only way these men could ever learn from this is if the entirety of their assets were confiscated. When money is all a person cares about, the only way to reach that person will be to affect them financially.
    This was not done.

I honestly don't understand the American deference toward the billionaire criminals who are crashing American communities and commerce. It's truly amazing to watch. It shows how easily manipulated humans are and I don't have much hope that things will get any better. This is a corporatocracy we live in--not a democracy but a new form of fascism. Americans have proven themselves to be quite resistant to that fact.

One moment, please; stop accusing "Americans" of the U.S. Government's sins. Several credible studies clearly document that the U.S. Government represents and legislates in the interests of the most wealthy U.S. citizens and their businesses. That is why there was no prosecution of these evil-doers for the fraud nor the perjury. Maybe your comment has no relation to that truth.

I listened to Charlie munger recently and he basically explained why none is complaining about the impending collapse. The world is not based on greed, but envy.
Envy is a deadly sin and it eats us up and makes us miserable even with all our wealth. I’m pretty sure we all want to see this ship go down in the hope that something more equal can emerge and thus eliminate this envy that permeates our sick civilisation.

14:48: 💰 Wall Street and politicians were complicit in creating the housing crisis through risky loans and financial innovations.
33:05: 💸 Wall Street culture of risk and excess led to unethical and illegal practices at Lehman Brothers.
40:17: 💰 The 2008 financial crisis was caused by greed and fraud in the financial industry, resulting in trillions of dollars of damage to the global economy. Despite large settlements, no major executives were held accountable.
53:37: 💰 The 2008 financial crisis did not teach the public and decision-makers anything, but the bankers learned that greed and misbehavior have no consequences.

I was a victim of this crisis from Merrill Lynch's failure. I was also a Director at a small bank in Chicago and saw it all happening. What the documentary did not cover enough was the immense pressure from the Federal Government to lend money's to non qualified applicants. This subprime game was turned into a social do good program by the Federal Gov , and that was part of the reason that bank executives were not brought to justice. An agressive prosecution scheme by the Feds would unraveled many politicians.
Very disappointed that the focus was only on Wall Street when yes, they executed, but the pressure and incentives from the Feds were really immense and near at a blackmail level. I was there!!!

Yes, so true. I lived in New York City, and saw it. Dont leave out the offshore derivatives whales, who sold these leveraged bonds all over the world. The British banksters were intimately involved. As soon as AGI insurance co. went bust, , they secretly sent its British CEO , (Sullivan) back to London, and let a new CEO take the blame. This was an international scheme.

I know! When the result of your leadership is failure, you just get a very nice severance package; if you lose your customers' money through your own avarice, then the government pays to replace the money. Without serious consequences for anything done, why stop doing it, when it's making you rich?
After that ridiculous celebration dinner following the bail-out, I wished that government would have been able to somehow take back that damn money- or, at the very least, that these guys might foot the bill themselves for their tasteless little celebration.

Something people need to say to themselves before committing a financial crime is not "lots of people do it and get away with it and get a slap on the wrist" but "how much of an impact will it have on the economy if I go to jail and my company collapses?" People at the top know that they will get away with their crimes because they know the whole world will collapse without them.

Instead of thinking about those who got away with it, Phillip Baker needs to think about the tens of millions of people who lost everything because of him, BECAUSE OF HIM, even if he was able to pay the $154 million, he will NEVER be able to restore the lives of the people he damaged. In about 2001 Citibank assumed my mortgage on my 350K condo which I had paid 4 months in advance to my original lender. They put it in immediate default and ruined my debt consolidation after I suffered a near fatal head blow in a work related accident. Not that anyone should care what happens to me being that we are all strangers. My fiancee walked off and left our home that took our 2 salaries to maintain so I convalesced in the front seat of a 1982 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra until I had to settle for pennies out of court for the injury. I put 7K down on this condo and then the original lender sold it in a Collateralized Debt Obligation to Citimortgage. No one told me, which violated the R.E.S.P.A. Laws of Real-estate. They went through with foreclosure even though I had paid for a quarter of a year while I looked for employment. I wrote my own counter motions and filed them with the courts. As you can see by this video, the courts were complicit as were the ratings agencies. I knew this in 2002. I said it in my counter motions. No one listened to me and they all got fat, rich and complacent. I called out then, A.VP Scott Scheiner, Vikram Pandit and a host of others at Citi calling them embezzling defrauders in my case file and accused the administrative law judge of complicity if he could not see the sophomoric fraud that Citi was committing. I wrote to every one and haggled over the phone with them for 16 months. Finally in March of 2003, they threw me to the concrete and steel and stole my home. I lost my health, I was permanently partially disabled, my fiancee walked off on me and I lost my career as a musical equipment tech from my injuries. I lived in the street for all but about 12 years from 2003 to 2021. I haven't be able to raise my debt to income ratio to get back on my feet and they ruined my credit score with their lies. I knew this was how they did it. No one cared to care and no one listened. Gary Foster from Citi was the only sacrificial lamb or black sheep who was incarcerated. No one else went to prison. This documentary is the rub. That no one will prosecute people because they are paid to look the other way. This house, needs to burn down to the ground and through the basement for what they did to us, (6 million Americans). I hope some day it will.

at 19:20 the video states the amount of questionable loans at $35 billion annually upwards for a period of 14 years. OK, now let's talk about the $2 TRILLION spent bombing rocks and children across the Asian continent. You could have GIVEN - not loaned - $200,000 to ten million home buyers, which at that time in many areas of the USA would have paid all or much of the home's price. Even if this amount was spread more thinly among more home buyers, the reducction mortgage payments would have been within the means of many perople who otherwise defaulted. All a moot point, of course, because America is a criminal warmongering police state, your "news" is lies, and you invite the most disgusting intrusive surveillance and illegal actions taken against you if you stand against these things.

The exact same thing can be said for the student loan problem we are facing now. Universities have used it as a cash cow and egregiously raised tuition rates to extraordinary high levels for degrees that even if you do finish, provide no chance of getting the type of job needed to pay back the loan and live on and the colleges are not forced to have more skin in the game to prevent defaults. Students who graduate are left being indentured slaves to a loan system that is predatory, because if you take a deferment the interest accrues and is compounded into capital raising the amount you owe which in turn makes the interest payments higher. So you never get the principal down.

A lier is a lier, a thief is a thief and a criminal is a criminal. The arrogance of this thief to feel as though he should have been treated better than any other criminal. This is one of the problem and injustices of the criminal justice systems of the world. Those in positions of power think themselves to be above the law and when caught breaking the laws, and mind you laws more than likely they made laws, they still feel that they shouldn't be treated as criminal. That's not to suggest that there are not those that do get passes there are. But the point is that these types of people feel as though they're untouchables. While the poor people around the world pay the biggest price of all for what mistakes they may make and most of the time they're making these bad choices because there's truly not other alternatives. Poor people do not have many options, and in some cases no options at all, this is the reality that most poor people face each and everyday of their lives. In conclusion: a thief is a thief... 1 with their own legal tender of 999,999,999 = 999,999,999 in servitude to the 1 with the law says you work for me. Show me where freedom can be found anywhere in that math ? We're done, because we said so, choice made, we're picking roll to someone else's DIE.

If this guy hadn't gotten caught, he'd still be stealing from people and laughing all the way to the bank.

Aren’t these wealthy criminals ever afraid of people just reaching the limits of their patience. Are the so entitled and privileged that the government favors and bails them for their incompetence over the poor depositors
    depositors

The whole system is designed 2 control the money, food, education, health, laws, everything. All has been planned from the begining, and its in your face. We were decieved and we are funding our own destruction and seem to like it.

I still have a Lehman mortgage with Mr Cooper collecting my payments. I wonder what Mr Cooper is doing with my payments, giving my payments to Dick Fuld!
