A little extra tip: Use campfires for fireplaces if the version you're building in or theming your build around has them. Much better and safer than just using a flint & steel and then calling it a day. You even get the opportunity for a chimney out of it.

2block tall is only good when its in survival and you just want it to be efficient, not good-looking. but if youre tryign to actually build seriously and stuff? that just aint right.
You know what looks really cool? Carpet over glass in your roof. Since both those blocks are transparent, as long as you don't have anything non or semi-transparent over them, you've just got daylight in your house without giving it any visibly obvious path in.
Murder holes, crenelations and arrow-slits were actually defensive things put on castles to protect the defenders against the enemies. I would recommend a TH-camr by the name of shadiversity for more info.

Yeah, Redstone torches have less light than normal torches, same with soul torches. Although, they commonly are used in (as the name implies.) Redstone contraption, AND gates would be my example.
Funny story about the enderman one: I was afk-ing my sugarcane farm overnight, and was shocked to find that I had hardly any when I woke up. Enderman took a block needed for the minecart detection system to work. I was so mad when I found him.

Honestly, some build styles work really well together. You just have to experiment. I tried mixing medieval and modern, it ended up looking really good! You do have to pay attention to how you mix the styles though, just plopping a tower next to a modern house doesn't work at all.
I remember building cool stuff in the Nether that was nice on the inside, but the whole exterior was a nether brick/fence/wall/stair/slab shell just for those ghasts. Nowadays, whew, much more variation.

When I was at my cousin's house I was playing Minecraft for the first time. My cousin asked me what block I wanted our house to be... I said emerald blocks. It didn't look terrible but I didn't know what I wanted to really do. We built for a while then I fell asleep while playing. My cousin finished the house and when I woke up I was amazed. My 9 (I don't remember how old I was. I think I was around 9 so we are keeping it that way) year old brain didn't know how bad it was but after watching this video I now know.
