This guy dave grohled three of his own albums, Is one of the greatest modern drummers, a self taught virtuoso on guitar and piano, and hes only 25 years old.
This guy is amazing, I had the pleasure of seeing him up close when he was in Denver Harbor (and then played a Fenix-TX set later that night), he was in Angles and Airwaves and now he is in NIN! Plus, he is a multi-instrumentalist with his own band The New Regime! Left handed drummers seem to really do it for me.
very very cool interview. Wonderful drumming technique and respect u have ... incredible direction and can't even imagine where all this knowledge and practice takes u but I will defo be lookin' out n' hoping to be a fly on the wall when u track sumthin' sumday. Bonham is my absolute favourite of all time as well and Houses of the Holy my fave Zep album. cheers Ilan. love your work.
Thanks for talking about John Bonham the way you did i feel the exact same way, let's not forget about Vinnie appice i seen him at a drum clinic with his brother and I was blown away i will never forget how good he is,and you're great too thank's Dave from Michigan
Bonham idolized Morello and Buddy Rich. He tuned his drums like a big band drummer - tight snare, bottom heads tuned high on toms, bass drum not too low.
I actually prefer Bonham's Fool In the Rain half time shuffle to Jeff Pocaro's Rosanna version of the same groove. The difference? Where Bonham puts that open hi hat. Am I alone in thinking the half time shuffle is one of the coolest things you can play on a kit?! I find myself mocking drummers who can't play one, not because I'm a snob, but because how can you ignore music history?!? Not being able to play a shuffle is like a guitar player ignoring the C chord! It's that fundamental!
I firmly believe that the shuffle is the single most important groove for a drummer to learn. Once a shuffle is established, and more importantly is stylized, a drummer can make almost any pattern groove with ease. I've spent more time learning the shuffle than anything else, and I feel that it shows. One of the greatest shuffles of all time that is NEVER mentioned when referencing great shuffles is Omar Hakim's interpretation on "Shadows in the Rain" by Sting. It's on Sting's debut album, "Dream of the Blue Turtles", which is just a great album in general, but Hakim's playing on Shadows absolutely floored me. My old band teacher did an arrangement of it for our jazz band and played us the studio recording, as that's what he referenced for his arrangement. That shuffle was burned into my brain, and after school that day, I walked to the music store and bought the album. That's how good it is. Go check that shuffle out right now.
and you should know that John Bs fav drummers were Buddy Rich and the True master of traps Mr Tony Williams - John 100% worshiped Tony Williams and so did Stewart - Learn Tony Williams
while the "sooo gay" comment made me laugh (always does), this guy (who looks exactly like a younger Alex Van Halen), has great taste and knows his stuff. Stop hating and don't be homophobic..the guy mentioned Copelan'd digital delay and most idiots don't even know that which is so incredibly stupid. I like this dude.
That is because he was just doing what the members of Paramore wanted him to do, Ilan said himself in a interview. Couldn't really do what he wanted but had to please the rest of the band. AVA may also be better suited for his type of drumming. That's why he sounds better to you.
Both great drummers, but I myself have to admit that I have influences I favourite over them...again not to knock them but even those two can't possibly influence everyone

totally awesome
Because that's completely natural and normal... 🤗
dave grohled? does that mean he recorded by him self? cause dave grohl sure didn't invent that LOL
Yeah I know. I would say he "Brian Wilsoned" it. Lol
this guy is a great drummer and he has an appreciation for the great drummers gone by. good to see and hear.

Joe D He's right handed, playing an open handed style.
His influences are spot on and I can hear them all in his playing.

FANTASTIC
Right on, Houses Of The Holy FTW!!
Probably my favorite Zeppelin album. Bonham kills on that album!
He seems like a cool guy!
I dare someone to count how many times he said the word fantastic.
He was one of the best drummer in NIN.
"If I'm not keeping time with the hi-hat while I'm doing something else, I don't feel quite right."
SAME HERE. Anyone else? HAHA.

Joshua Strong
A shame that a great groove had to appear on a Sting record lol
Mocking drummers does make you a snob. We should all be sticking together
I'm surprised he waited to talk about Bonham. When you listen to his drumming he is VERY obviously a Bonham fan.
Alan Shinkunas Best till last.
I hear alot of Ian Paice in your style, especially snare technique. Is he an influence?
hi my name is Ilan Rubin from EVERYWHERE
and you should know that John Bs fav drummers were Buddy Rich and the True master of traps Mr Tony Williams - John 100% worshiped Tony Williams and so did Stewart - Learn Tony Williams

he never mentioned me
Ilan, welcome to paramore!!!!
that dude is cool with me
That's either a natural lisp or he's wearing a retainer. I don't have a lisp, but that's how I sounded when I used to wear a retainer. :-)
welcome to AvA family:)
He really really looks like Dan Fogler, from Balls of Fury.
nopeekingjon SERIOUSLY!
How is he better in Angels? If he's himself?
Was this edited?
