    What a fun project! Nothing quite like fresh pressed cider. How do you keep mold from growing on your apples? I did the same thing with my scraps last year and anything not fully submerged will 100% grow mold. I got weights and fermentation lids (the function of your towel) for this year and stuff all my scraps in there. Even if you use saran wrap and clean rocks or a ziploc full of water, submerge those apples girl! I don't want you to be disappointed!

    • @calicocowacres
      @calicocowacres  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never made the vinegar before, actually, so I'm not sure I have a good answer haha! Every recipe I read for it basically said if you find mold on it to scoop it off (unless it's colorful, then toss the batch), but we haven't had any grow yet! I'm sure it's probably based on location/environmental factors, so maybe we're just getting lucky?! Now im nervous lol I did put some pie plates in a few of them just to be safe though!

    • @chelseaapicella4412
      @chelseaapicella4412 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@calicocowacres I hope that’s the case! I’ve been fermenting a bunch this year and did apple scrap vinegar last year too. There’s this white filmy stuff that can grow on top but that’s not mold - it’s kahm yeast and it’s fine to scoop and toss. But you’re right, the colorful or white poofy/fuzzy ones are definitely mold!

      @calicocowacres  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ash1eonYT we’ve got THREE😂 they run away from him. But they’re not fully grown yet. I’m hoping soon they’ll be able to fend him off and maybe give him a good peck so he leaves them alone in the future. He’s actually kinda scared of the ducks which I love. The smallest duck (Edith) will walk right up to him and peck him on the face with her bill.

    We really like the DIY aspect! Was actually looking at press designs today and was wondering if the plastic bucket would hold up when it had all those holes. How much did they charge per bushel for those second apples? Cheers and happy cider making

    • @calicocowacres
      @calicocowacres  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We wanted to create a press that didn't use a car jack & this worked amazingly. The buckets definitely didn't hold up - regardless of holes. BUT the stockpot has worked very well - would be good with a metal bucket, too. The bushels we got were $10 a bushel for the seconds apples. Thanks!

      @@calicocowacres Very cool! I have a spare car jack so i was just thinking of using that! Just sourced some Golden Russet/Dabinett/Porters Perfection for $350 per 20 bushel bin, slightly expensive but its nice to get some cider specific apples! Cheers and happy cider making

    • @calicocowacres
      @calicocowacres  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! In the video I do mention that the tray is temporary. In future years we’ll be getting a stainless steel restaurant steam pan, but this is what we had access to right now. We were going to use a metal bucket to fill with apples, but again like I said in the video, it would’ve taken 2 weeks to get here or an hour + drive to find a place that had metal buckets in stock.

    Where did you get this parts for the actual press itself

    • @calicocowacres
      @calicocowacres  ปีที่แล้ว

      For the wood we got it from a semi-local lumber store (just over the border in TN) and we used hard maple for strength. The "press" part is a heavy duty vice screw we got from amazon, since taylor was not a fan of the designs that used a car jack due to the potential for oil leakage (I think that was the reason but can confirm with him). I will link the screw in our amazon storefront if you'd like to see the exact one. I can't share links via comments, unfortunately.

He says um on about every third word at press conferences, and he makes over 5.5 million a year in salary. I did not notice you saying if before, but unfortunately now I probably will. At least you do not talk fast also, like I do.

      We both say umm a ton, too! I just try to edit them all out! My mouth works faster than my brain sometimes and the words just come out haha. Now I'm going to obsessively try and remove all the umms and likes even more than I already do😂 I do actually talk superrr fast in person - that I can for sure blame on my michigan accent! I usually don't in videos because I try to think about what I'm saying beforehand and want it to be understandable for you guys, so if it comes out too fast I re-say it!
