Yeah, can you shortly describe the timeline of the selection process to google step? Also, you mentioned about the interview questions. It would be very interesting and helpful if you do that😍
Yes I'd love to! So when I applied the first time (I got rejected the first time) I applied on November 3rd, which was the deadline at the time. I think they got back to me with a rejection letter around January? I don't fully remember. The time I got accepted, I applied very early (within the first week of it opening, so probably mid-September) and they extended an interview invite in mid-October (about 4 weeks later). I interviewed with them late October and around 2 weeks later I got the offer! Then, I entered the team-matching phase and I was assigned to a team & location by mid-December!
@@MeganPhibbons Thanks 😍. One more question, I am applying this September, and I really want to get at least an interview. So if you don't mind, can you share your resume that you applied to Google STEP, please? Or can you please review mine or maybe send some helpful tips)

Thank you! I'm glad to hear that you like the quality because I work really hard on my videos :) In terms of the interviews themselves, they specifically choose questions based on your level of experience. I think you can definitely expect easy range for STEP (maybe an easier medium-level question) but it's specifically based on what you would/should know based on the projects and classes on your resume.
Wow, thank you so much for all the information! Just curious, did you write a cover letter for STEP? also, for some reason, I can't seem to view the essay questions. Do you have to submit your essay first?
I'll try to get this out soon! I also have an interview coming up soon (for my conversion process!!) so I'll be prepping as well. I'll most likely be making a video soon sharing how I personally am prepping for the interviews. Best of luck!

Hey! I would definitely recommend applying, you don't need multiple programming languages in order to apply. You can also do the coding interview in any language that you prefer, so anything is good. In terms of writing the resume, I would make sure you include some relevant technical projects (these can be from classes, personal things you work on, etc) or work experiences that you may have had. I also think it's a good idea to list off relevant classes that you have so that they know about your technical abilities! Second year here :) How do I prepare for the coding questions? What kind of coding questions do they ask? How did you prepare for it? Any advice/ tips regarding that?
Hey! I’m planning to make a video about that in the near future, but just generally, I think doing hackerrank/leetcode problems is a great way to prep! Also, I would recommend grabbing a friend and doing a mock interview with them where you write code in an google doc, because that’s how the actual Google interview goes! Hope this helps :)
Hi mam, I have just one doubt, I am in 2nd year I know basics of Data Structure but I know Android development. I want to know what types of questions they will ask in the coding interview is it related to DS or Development Part.
Hello! I think regardless of what you specialize in (back-end, Android development, Web development, etc), they will still ask about Data Structures and Algorithms. Of course, it depends on the interviewer, but most of Google likes to make sure your DSA is strong. If you're not as good with data structures, I would definitely review them!

It was a great video Further I wanted to know something What all skills that you had before applying in Step Also what type of questions do they ask in Step are they are related to DSA or Dev Thanks
I'm glad you liked the video! Before I got the STEP internship, I was pretty skilled in Java, Python, and C and had some other project experience. I also participated in a lot of clubs outside of my academics, which I think helped to make me seem more well-rounded! I would say the questions for the STEP interviews are definitely more DSA, although you could get some general development questions as well!
Sometimes they ask one or two behavioral questions just as a "warmup" in case you're nervous, but the interviews are purely technical (either theory or coding questions)
I have applied for S.T.E.P this year and they asked me to do Google online challenge. Did you also come across the same process after applying? And why out of 4 they reserved 3 for students from North America
I personally did not have to do the Google online coding challenge, but I just made a video sharing how to prep for technical interviews and coding challenges, so I would recommend checking that out!
Hey! I would say as long as you're taking some CS classes at some point by next summer, you should definitely apply! Worst-case scenario, you lose the time it took you to apply. Best case scenario, you actually get an offer!
I am 2nd year college student. I know C and C++ except OOP feature of C++. And I also do problem solving but I am not still good at it. I am learning DSA. Am I capable for Google Step Internship? Or what should I do extra for getting chance in Google Step Internship?
Hello Megan, thanks a lot for creating such informative video, but seems like I am late. I have filled my application in a hurry because I thought that I am quite late and this application may close any time. My resume is not correct, can I apply again with my institute Email Id. Waiting for video on tips on resume building. Keep making such videos. They are really helpful
In general, I advise against applying to the same program twice under different emails. If you can, I would try and email a Google recruiter (even better if you can find one specific to your university), and ask if you can update your application. Hope this helps!
@@MeganPhibbons On the application portal it is written "Your previous application appears below. You must wait 90 days before re-applying." Will it be correct to mail a recruiter. Currently in 2nd year only, I don't know any recruiter, how to reach out to them. Requesting any random person on LinkedIn will help ?? Sorry to disturb you, but it would be great if you could help me out
@@garvitgupta13 Yes, that is why I do not think you should re-apply with a different email. They may think you are trying to boost your chances by applying through multiple accounts. It's possible that reaching out to recruiters on LinkedIn could help, they may be able to direct you to a contact that can update your application. Additionally, some universities have a "google email" that you can contact with the format [school name]students@google.com. It may be worth it to try and email that and see if you get a reply!
Aww this sounds very cool but I have no experience in pretty much anything. I've been out of school since I graduated high school since 2012. Not even good work experience, just a cashier..even no extra curricular activity, my school that I'm starting is an online university. (No resume)..I defiantly would not even be considered.
Yes, I had a prior internship at Fidelity Investments and had a project from a Hackathon that I had worked on. However, since this is an intro internship, you don't need any prior experience to apply/get in!
Hey I want to know about 1. difference between apply online and by referral? 2. If I apply by referral than I need to apply through online? 3. What kind of questions ask in interview? Both behavioural and technical? How to prepare for it? Thanks in advance.
Hey! Great questions. I think applying with a referral puts you in a separate applicant pool and makes it more likely for your application to get looked at closely. If you apply through a referral, you do not need to apply online! You can even double check with the person who referred you to make sure your application went through. In terms of what they ask in an interview, it's primarily technical. If you want, you can check out the video I just posted "How To Ace The Technical Interview" for advice on prepping for interviews and some types of questions I've seen in interviews. I go over coding challenges (which Google does send to some applicants), Whiteboarding interviews (aka the phone call you'd have with an engineer), and theory questions (typically Google STEP asks these to first-year students). Let me know if you have any other questions after watching that video!
The only real way to prepare is to practice! Try doing some mock interviews or leetcode problems to get yourself ready for the interview. In terms of getting a referral, it’s best to ask for one from someone you already have a relationship (work, friendship, etc) with instead of just asking random people on LinkedIn. I personally don’t get referrals to people unless I know them or have worked closely with them before, and I think many others are the same. Hope this helps!
Hi Megan! I’m just slightly confused on the part where you mentioned ‘if u apply with a referral, you don’t need to apply online.’ So then do we not need to apply at all or do we send our application to the referrer who then uploads it? Would the application be the same just uploaded differently? I was also wondering around what time we should ask a person for a referral with respect to application dates. Should we only ask them in the open timeframe or is asking a month or so before the applications even open up a better idea? Lastly, would you recommend getting as many referrals as possible or is one the optimal level? Thank you very much in advance for taking the time out to answer my doubts!
Hey! Thank you for this. I'm waiting for the resume to be reviewed. How important is it to submit the application on the first day vs submitting on the 3rd day with (maybe) a better resume?
Hey! I think it's definitely to submit a bit later with a very polished & strong application rather than to submit as soon as possible. When you say you're waiting for your resume to be reviewed, what do you mean?
My advice for filling out the 3 questions is to be genuine about yourself. They want to use those questions to learn more about you and see if you're a good fit, so if you're genuine, that's really positive! Additionally, I would recommend trying to include information about your projects and experience as you write the essays. Good luck!
Sorry for the delay in response time, I was finishing up my semester! I hope the interview went well :) Typically they test on common data structures or algorithms, and for anyone else with this question, I think they send out an interview prep checklist where they give you topics to review! I honestly would just review common things like maps, linked lists, graphs, trees, and how to traverse those structures so you know what to do if you encounter them!
@@MeganPhibbons thanks for your response, I hope that this answer will useful for others)) I already interviewed)) there was one easy for realisation problem and one problem about prime factorisation of number
Is the program eligible for international students? I heard that there are options in Europe. Is there a “salary” to maintain yourself? What was your everyday life like?
Thank you for the questions! I believe they do have options in Europe, as well as Canada! I'm not sure about other countries but you should definitely check depending on your location. In terms of salary, STEP interns get paid hourly rates (I don't fully remember what the rate was, but it was definitely competitive). Additionally, they give you a relocation bonus to cover any flights/moving things you may need to get to your location! My every day life was amazing, I typically would come into the office, make some coffee while chatting with my coworkers, and sit down to start work for the day. Around noon, I would take a lunch break in a Google cafe (they prepare free breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day) with my team. After eating lunch, I would usually take a quick walk around the trail right outside of our building before getting back to work. I would typically start my day around 8:30 AM and end around 5:30 PM but the hours are extremely flexible and totally up to you! Hope this helps :)
Megan Phibbons thank you so much for taking so much time to give a full-course answer, hahaha! So glad I found your channel and I’m looking forward to upcoming videos!
I believe all internships will be remote this year, but I think that is a different internship than the summer internship. The STEP summer 2021 application has already closed, so maybe that is the one for the fall? My internship was from May - August.
This was a super helpful video Megan! Do you recall if there were any word caps for the essay questions? Approx. how long were yours and how much time did you spend on them before submitting your app?
Thank you, I'm glad you found the video helpful! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've had a really busy week of school! In terms of the essay lengths, I seem to remember them being capped at 200 words each. Mine were all between 190 words and 200 because I wanted to give them as much detail as possible to work with! In terms of the time I spent, I think I spent about a day or so writing them and then two or three days working with friends + family to proofread them and edit after getting suggestions. Hope this helps!
Maam, I am in class 10 currently, I am from India . What all Programming language should I learn . I have learnt Python and Kotlin. What all do I need to apply for it ?. Please take a little bit of time from your busy schedule. To answer this question. 🙏
Hello! In terms of programming languages, I think it's always a good idea to have a solid foundation in something like Java (object-oriented), something like Python, and some sort of front-end or mobile development. It seems like you have Python and Kotlin covered, so if you're interested in learning something new, I would recommend Java! For the programming interviews particularly, I would just use whichever language you're most comfortable with.
I believe you can apply, you just have to go to the Google Careers site (you can search it on Google) and search for roles at your location. Your skills sound like a good fit though!
A transcript is really just a document from your university stating all of the courses you've taken and the grade you received. If you school doesn't offer those, you could list out all of your course numbers, titles, professors, and grades (as well as your cumulative GPA). In the document, you could then write a brief explanation that your university doesn't offer transcripts. Hope this helps!
Maybe it's a dumb question, but do you get paid for the internship? Because I was thinking about applying next year, but I would have to move from my country and that would be pretty expensive
This isn't a dumb question at all! They provide a relocation bonus to help with any travel or housing costs (although I don't think they are providing it for remote interns this year). Additionally, they pay an hourly rate that is very competitive and livable!
I just accepted for an offer but I’m wondering about a return offer, idk if you can tell me if you received a return offer or if there’s a process for it. Thanks!
Hey! First of all, congrats on accepting your offer! I personally did STEP after my sophomore year, then got a return offer for the SWE internship the following summer. I then got the return offer to convert to full-time for when I graduate! The process honestly isn't too bad, you just write a midpoint evaluation 6 weeks into the internship and then a final evaluation in the last week. Both your host and co-host write feedback on your performance, then all of your information goes to the hiring committee - and I mean ALL of it - past interviews, your original resume, your new resume, your hosts' feedback, your project writeups, etc. Then they decide whether or not you have to interview (I didn't have to interview for STEP to SWE, but I did have to interview for SWE to Full Time). I hope this was helpful! I'll probably make a video a bit later into the summer explaining the full process :)
Hey Can You Please tell about the topics that they ask in the Interviews like about the Important DS Algo topics and about their level for second year.
It's too much to talk about in a comment, but I'll be making a video on that soon! Overall I would just say to study the basic (arrays, lists, maps, trees, etc)!
@@MeganPhibbons Thanks a lot Megan for replying. I just came to know that This Internship is only for Girls. Really Very Sad after that. but Np Will try hard and find out some other way. Thanks :)
@@aryangrover7216 Wait that's not true at all!!! It's designed to uplift people who aren't typically in tech, but literally anyone can participate! I had a lot of male friends who did the program :)
@@MeganPhibbons OMG. Literally Shocked by seeing this. Will surely apply by tomorrow and Will surely crack it if your blessings and your amazing videos are with us. Thanks a lot for helping me out. :)
How difficult were your interview questions and when did you do the interview (date)? I just applied because it seemed like the one most fit for someone like me who only has a few projects and no work experience. I’m not really expecting to hear back because my resume is ridiculously empty and today is the last day of applications, but if I do I don’t want to be unprepared.
The interview questions for STEP are specifically chosen based on your level of experience (specifically based on classes). For me, I found them to be very doable, because your interviewers want you to succeed! I think I did my interview mid-October for STEP, but things might be a bit later this year because of covid. I hope you hear back and good luck!!
Honestly, I don't think you really need any (although having skills definitely helps). The program itself is designed for beginners, so if you don't have any skills going in, that's fine! To better your chances, I would recommend having concrete skills in at least one programming language and at lease one personal project to make your resume stand out :)
For STEP North America, they paid us hourly and I believe the hourly wage depends on location and role. I don't usually share the exact amount that they pay, but I can guarantee that it is competitive with other big tech companies!
Hello Megan, I also have applied for STEP internship program. I have already applied to 3 places. So, should I apply at more ppaces using different e-mail Id. Pleas respond.
Hello! I would recommend to not do this. They specifically ask you to not apply to more than three programs, and they will know if you just change the email and keep applying. Companies want you to respect their rules, so if you try to bypass them, it may hurt all of your applications (rather than bettering your chances).
I would recommend uploading your resume as a PDF to Google Drive, then getting a shareable public link to it. As long as you make it public and don't delete it from drive, then they will be able to access the link!
@@jacquelinevalle3313 yes good luck! I just posted a video about how to prep for technical interviews that you may find helpful. As a first year, one of your interviews will be a coding interview and the other will most likely be just answering technical/theory questions or doing some debugging. That's not officially posted anywhere, but I believe that's how it was for my friends who got STEP in their first year!
After applying, they got back to me in 2-3 weeks inviting me to interview. After the interviews, it was another 2-3 weeks until my offer (but everyone is different!)
I'm pretty sure, yes! There are a couple of different locations, so you're probably more likely to get an offer if you apply to places that are close to where you live. Still, you can probably apply from anywhere! Google is pretty good with giving employee sponsorships from what I understand :)

Hey! Thanks for the great video! Are the interviews purely technical, or do they also ask behavioral questions? Thanks!
Sometimes they ask one or two behavioral questions just as a "warmup" in case you're nervous, but the interviews are purely technical (either theory or coding questions)
@@MeganPhibbons Thank you!!
I don't have any work experience but I want to join this Intern. So What should I do?
I have applied for S.T.E.P this year and they asked me to do Google online challenge. Did you also come across the same process after applying? And why out of 4 they reserved 3 for students from North America
Did you apply for Step-Singapore?
@@brainbox101x Yes
I personally did not have to do the Google online coding challenge, but I just made a video sharing how to prep for technical interviews and coding challenges, so I would recommend checking that out!
If I’m
Correct. I don’t think they ask for a essay anymore
Also how are you supposed to know what to study for, if your a first year student applying, do they tell you
@Meganphibbons Does we get money like some stuff or stiffen for working as intern in google as step intern?
Is Google STEP available for international students ?
I am going to apply for the 2021 step
Best of luck to you!
When is the interview ? , the application is currently opened.
I'm from bangladesh. Can i apply too?Or is it for American students only?
Hey, I'm about to be a freshman (whenever my college starts) so should I apply this year or work on my computing skills and apply next year?
Hey! I would say as long as you're taking some CS classes at some point by next summer, you should definitely apply! Worst-case scenario, you lose the time it took you to apply. Best case scenario, you actually get an offer!
@@MeganPhibbons Thank youuuu 😭❤️
Hey, in the eligibility criteria it says North American universities. Does it mean that students from other countries cannot apply?
Does first year student mean that you just started your first year when you apply or that you apply after your first year?
Is it obligatory to apply just if you’re in America? Can’t I participate if I’m in the EMEA region?😭
Hey thanks so much for the video, if your a community college student applying for the internship will you still be able to qualify
Do you think attending a target school is a significant factor in getting accepted?
I am 2nd year college student. I know C and C++ except OOP feature of C++. And I also do problem solving but I am not still good at it. I am learning DSA. Am I capable for Google Step Internship?
Or what should I do extra for getting chance in Google Step Internship?

Is this program mainly for SWE intern or Data science aspirants too??
Hello Megan, are Computer Science students from an overseas university allowed to apply.
@@MeganPhibbons Thanks a lot for giving you time 😊
I will definitely try this.
Aww this sounds very cool but I have no experience in pretty much anything. I've been out of school since I graduated high school since 2012. Not even good work experience, just a cashier..even no extra curricular activity, my school that I'm starting is an online university. (No resume)..I defiantly would not even be considered.
That's totally valid! You should use this year to prepare some and learn more things to build experience so you can apply next year!
When you did your internship, Did you have a prior work experience or technical project?
Yes, I had a prior internship at Fidelity Investments and had a project from a Hackathon that I had worked on. However, since this is an intro internship, you don't need any prior experience to apply/get in!
Hey I want to know about
1. difference between apply online and by referral?
@@MeganPhibbons Thanks!
I have the technical interview on Thursday and I am so nervous!!
For Germany role?
Taniya Nandy nah mine would’ve been in the US if not for covid. it’s a remote internship this year as far as i was told
Sorry I never got back to this!! How did your interview go?
How long do they take to give you a response?
@@MeganPhibbons Thank you for answering! I recently asked a SWE engineer to review & they promised to get back to me soon :)

Hey Megan. Can I apply as a Polymer engineering major and a computer science minor.
All beautyful, but I have a question: is the STEP program only for people who are resident in the US? Cause I live in Italy and I'd love to apply
Not at all, STEP has locations everywhere! I would recommend checking out the STEP website for a full list of locations !
@@MeganPhibbons Thanks a lot. Just another question: even though I'm italian may I apply in the US?
Okay i fked up. 🙂 I applied today (dec 18) when the dates close on (dec 23) ... My resume and application was basic 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂i made all the mistakes
U haven't done the resume comparison did u?
Plz make video on how to fill that 3questions plz..
My advice for filling out the 3 questions is to be genuine about yourself. They want to use those questions to learn more about you and see if you're a good fit, so if you're genuine, that's really positive! Additionally, I would recommend trying to include information about your projects and experience as you write the essays. Good luck!
I invited to the interview, I do not know what topics should I learn to the interview
The dates are in jult- September 2021.. but u have College during that time? Is there work from home option??
I believe all internships will be remote this year, but I think that is a different internship than the summer internship. The STEP summer 2021 application has already closed, so maybe that is the one for the fall? My internship was from May - August.
how can i reach out to you? i have an interview soon

Maam,
I am in class 10 currently,
I am from India .
Hello I am 2 year student of IITU in the Kazakhstan. Can I apply? I know OOP in Java and Algorithmization in C++. How do I apply? Please help.
I believe you can apply, you just have to go to the Google Careers site (you can search it on Google) and search for roles at your location. Your skills sound like a good fit though!
How can I connect with you on LinkedIn? Great video and great advice for freshers at college.
I'm glad you enjoyed my video! Here's my LinkedIn :) www.linkedin.com/in/meganphibbons/
Thanks Megan for replying.
Hey I don't have transcript to apply for Google step Internship what to do? What should be there plz explain
@@MeganPhibbons oh thk u
Maybe it's a dumb question, but do you get paid for the internship? Because I was thinking about applying next year, but I would have to move from my country and that would be pretty expensive
This isn't a dumb question at all! They provide a relocation bonus to help with any travel or housing costs (although I don't think they are providing it for remote interns this year). Additionally, they pay an hourly rate that is very competitive and livable!
@@MeganPhibbons thanks for the answer!
I'll probably make a video a bit later into the summer explaining the full process :)
is it also for an Indian students?
I applied for an STEP Intern in India.
I hope you get an interview! :)
Hey Can You Please tell about the topics that they ask in the Interviews like about the Important DS Algo topics and about their level for second year.

Also was there any kind of salary or was it like a volunteering position?
The interview questions for STEP are specifically chosen based on your level of experience (specifically based on classes). For me, I found them to be very doable, because your interviewers want you to succeed! I think I did my interview mid-October for STEP, but things might be a bit later this year because of covid. I hope you hear back and good luck!!
Yes, they pay their interns very well! I don't think Google has any unpaid positions :)
Hello mam!!
How much skills person must have to apply for step internship ?
Honestly, I don't think you really need any (although having skills definitely helps). The program itself is designed for beginners, so if you don't have any skills going in, that's fine! To better your chances, I would recommend having concrete skills in at least one programming language and at lease one personal project to make your resume stand out :)
How much stipend did you get in STEP?
