Duran. In the light weight division. Was the all time best ever , even,in,welterweight he was. Very good. He will go down in history. As. One of the very best ever to,put the gloves on,,,
This is the Duran that Ray Leonard wanted in Montreal. But instead, he got the PRIMO Duran and it was too much for Ray. The only way Ray beats Duran, is if Duran is not at his best. Ray knew this and this is why Ray said it was his strategy to get Roberto into the ring at less than 100%. And the only way to get Duran into the ring like that, was to pay off his management to get him to sign. This is why the 'no mas' fight still bothers Leonard, he knows deep down inside that he didn't beat the prime Duran and it eats at him. Also, what kind of champ wants to fight his biggest rival at less than 100%? Leonard is NOT in Duran's class, he is over rated.
Personally I think that's a little harsh on Leonard. How would he know what shape Duran was gonna be in for their rematch. Hardly Leonard's fault if Duran turns up not firing on all cylinders. Duran might've turned up even more motivated as a new champion to bury Leonard forever, but he didnt. They did fight a third time where Duran obviously would've had a lot to prove and a score to settle yet he was beaten again. I understand the point you make however I doubt Leonard loses sleep over his Duran results. He was a 23 yr old fighting a seasoned warrior at his own game (wrongly) in the first fight yet almost still won! I'd take your point more if he'd been humiliated and soundly beaten in Montreal but he wasnt. Anyway, great fighters all!
@@paulcolville5972 Ray knew what kind of shape Duran would be in because Duran wasn't given enough time to be in shape.....pretty simple, really. LOL, Ray says himself that he doesn't get satisfaction from the New Orleans fight. You don't know anything of the situation, obviously, so your opinion means nada.
Cosell described Gonzalez's style as awkward. It's not awkward at all. His style is very proper and well schooled. He looked really good against an all time great in Duran--who perhaps wasn't in the best shape.
The thing about Duran when he wasn't in shape, it was his defense that really fell off. People don't give him enough credit for his defense but as you know, his head movement was outstanding. But Gonzalez here nailed him a few times. Palomino, on the other hand, had a hard time getting to him and Mr. Fast Hands Ray Leonard saw Duran's head rolling with almost every shot. His offense was still good though obviously it fell off too, but to me it was his defense that slipped most precipitously.
BS 'Duran looks puffy.' & 'Not 1-punch KO artist.' That right-hand could end any bout in a big hurry. RD GOAT athlete, not just boxer. God bless him for making Sign of the Cross at opening bell.
Yeah, Duran looked great against the guys he got up for (Leonard and Palomino), but otherwise in his run after Lightweight he was already starting to show signs of the inconsistency and lack of training discipline that he became known for post-Leonard. He looked somewhat sloppy in most of those Welterweight fights pre-Leonard. Then again people forget that he was almost 12 years and nearly 70 fights into his career. People tend to fall off at that stage, especially upon moving up in weight.
Totally agree! Not just him but Reg Gutteridge and Al Bernstein hated Duran. If he was British or American they would be kissing Duran's ass and they would sweep no mas under the carpet. Leonard would have been made the villain for his refusal to fight. When Ali mocked opponents it was cruel but it was OK for Leonard because he was an Uncle Tom
@@dennisramdas2502Yes Cosell was shocked that in Montreal Canada stadium where Leonard won his medal the packed stadium was cheering and in love with Roberto Duran.
My favorite boxer of all time the hand of stone Roberto Duran.

what year was this? I noticed Cosell said Duran only trained 3 weeks for this fight. Ballsy dude.

Schenkel and Cosell SO bias against Duran they're despicable. Leonard suck-ups. But guess who ended up winning, sycophants, Los Manos De Piedra!

Even before Leonard came along Howard Cosell hated Duran
why?
Because he was a Leonard brown noser!
