@@n3x477 nope, EDM it's Not a genre, is a designation for all the electronic music, house, techno, Dubstep, are genres, edm is a designation for all the genres Basically
The whole point of good 'techno' is its rejection of classic melody in favor of overlapping loops that gradually change over a 32 and 64 beat periods. On the surface, the 4/4 beat is king and there is a lot of repetition, but if you listen closely, no two bars of the track are the same. The track is always evolving. This has an intrinsic psychedelic effect on the human brain, and generates a trance like state that alters your perception of time. Techno is not a linear musical experience it is a single place that is ancient and eternal. Each track is like a slightly different door to that place. But every artist working in techno recognizes that their work is only an entrance to the same thing. This is why good techno is essentially anonymous and is a strange way... humble. Electronic dance music has always been saturated with pop elements. It is an industry thing. They are always trying to create dance music that will cross over as a mainstream pop hit. Then there is the wacky stupid, tasteless stuff, because the music industry and nightclubs attract dicks, and no self respecting pop culture takes itself too seriously.
you hit the nail on the head, this series took me back to the ecstasy dens of the late 80's and early 90's....... i remember being tranced out ... now I am an old fart in my 50's but never lost the beat :-)
I've been listening to techno for about 30 years now - and I'm still not bored of the genre, nor has it gotten stale but constantly reinventing the ideas of rhythm and sound. I grew up on the sounds of Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Luke Slater, etc and now I really dig the sounds of Amelie Lens, Rodhad, Paula Temple and so many others. I've seen other genres rise up and fall away, yet I see techno still there, still consistent and still so damn enjoyable... Long live techno.
@@SonderSessions It's really down to sound design, structure of rhythmic elements, etc. Listening to techno from the early 90's (like I did) onwards and step forwards 5 years each time and there's easily discernible differences in the genre. Evolutions like the more deep, hypnotic techno is a more recent progression of the genre (or sub-genre to be picky). The 4/4 may be the main driver, but a lot of techno relies on odd musical timings for things like polymeter or polyrhythm in things like the percussion/synth/bass elements. How these have been implemented has changed over the years too. (And a techno tune may not even be 4/4 either - ASC with a 3/4 non-stomper for example: th-cam.com/video/A_qtyTqKXGs/w-d-xo.html )
Amiele Lens isn't progress, or innovative, her music is regurgitated hard dance sounds from the late 90s. There is plenty of great if great "techno producers" still pushing boundaries in sounds but it ain't Lens 🤣
Protip: Techno creates tension by making you feel trapped in a loop, and you wonder if on the next part you'll escape the loop or if the same thing will repeat again. It works because of the release created when something new happens, so songs can be extended with longer repetitions because those will just cause stronger releases. I'm actually not a big fan of pure techno, it could be argued that the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack was very technoy, but I liked the first two ones better.
This is actually a really accurate description. Techno isnt about 8bar loops. Techno is about 7bar, 10bar, 3bar loops, which are very uncommon in any other genres, so techno music progresses just when you least expect it. Thats why techno is bittersweet.
These two comments taught me more about techno than every video I’ve seen that attempts to differentiate techno from other genres (including this video). Thank you!
Your analytical description of what the essence of techno is portrays a deep respect for the music. Too bad all other fans have zero respect for, in fact even disrespect, the music, using it only as a tool to accompany their drug trips. Seriously, does anyone seriously wanna tell me these people actually care about the music? Ridiculous.
Now that we've cleared up what Techno and what EDM is, now we should start explaining people the difference between Techno, House and Trance and what prefixes like "Acid", "Psy", "Dark" and "Hard" indicate.
Even in Psychedelic Trance there are several styles. For example Goa, Hard Trance, Progressive Trance, Dark or Jungle. Or House Music: Chicago, New York/Garage… ACID, Schranz, Minimal… Hardcore, Gabber… And so on and so on…
Techno has a funny way of being both communal and solitary at the same time. It's tribal - lots of people dancing together, but individualistic and introverted - hypnotic, head down, eyes closed, focus is on the sound and rhythm not what other people are doing in the room. I don't think there is any other music that is quite like this. Also, for me at least, an important part of techno is that it's about hearing music you have never heard before. I know there's hits and classics in Techno as there is in all genres but I am most happy listening to a set where I don't recognise any of the tracks.
So true, this makes it easy to just go to a rave alone and 4 hours larer you still dancing with random strangers, but you´re somewhat comfortable with each other. Another two hours in you are friends with like third of the rave.
No it’s pretty cut and dry to me. I like EBM, and techno with a more aggressive sound, and EDM sounds like a commercial mess. Also the crowds are different.
I asked a friend of mine what music she likes to listen to and she answered: "Dubstep". When I asked her which dubstep DJs she likes she said: "Alan Walker". No joke, this really happened.
Notes On Paper there was no EDM in 1999 dear, you're speaking of EDM like it was a genre..it's actually a culture. that responds to the electronic and rave countercultures..
Sandstorm is Trance. In today's day it could be classified as Progressive Trance. But during it's release it was marketed as Trance. Along with Tiesto, Oakenfold, Benassi, Dirty Vegas, etc..
@@Albanez39 What. Bullshit are you wrote ???? Are you become a " Brainwashed" estupido Astra'l o P ...!!!!! P.s." Youth " ???? What is this ??? I think you have take too Much Drugs ....
The whole purpose of techno is to chill, with long repeating beats, melodies and tunes. What I like about techno is that when I'm not listening to it, I can have a certain part of a techno song in my head. Or of course some random beat or tune that would fit right into a Techno song.
Very simple: Techno emulates the sound of the Industrial Age. Like stepping into a factory and hearing the sounds the machines produce. Or the sound of an steam engine (train), etc.
Well... actually Techno is an umbrella term as well. It's also a genre by itself. I think the comparison presented here is pretty good. In a nutshell your electronic mainstream junk is not techno. Cheers... I am going to Tresor now :P.
dude what the fuck are you talking about. Before 2010 i never even heard of the term 'EDM' No one ever heard of the term 'EDM' before 2010. And i have been raving since the 90s. There actually was a world and a scene before you where born you now.
EDM is not a genre at all and stands for Electronic Dance Music (I guess I didn't learn anything to you). Problem is the term is unclear and has no real definition whereas house, electro, techno or hardstyle has. You can't compare EDM to techno because that's like comparing chocolate to an orange. Yeah, you can prefer one and both are eatable but that stops there. Sandstorm is as different from bigroom as house is from techno. The real problem for the average "external" listener is EDM contains "Electronic Music" so they can associate any electronic music genre like techno with it
to me techno is probably the most fascinating musical phenomenon... perhaps it's the ultimate form of music on this planet... the last original music genre in history
@@hnry9118 Check out Raito "Hot Temptation" or DJ Ghost "Radar" and tell me that's boring. The last one is on Blasterjaxx's label Maxximize, a big room label. So you'll see what I'm talking about.
You know, it's impossible to say exactly, given how vague the term EDM is. It appears to have been coined by the press to decribe the distinctly Brostep-influenced strain of Bigroom Electro House, so people end up calling both European Bigroom and Brostep EDM. And it's impossible to say whether they're wrong, perhaps they are, perhaps they aren't.
The people making this video don't know themselves! They probably are used to listening to reggae and classical music all day; and then stating a bunch of nonsense on TH-cam.
But honestly, if you make a classic techno track and put acid arps in it it becomes "acid house". It's still the exact same style as techno, at least the song he used in the video. Bass heavy, kick focus, repetetive short melody = techno.

Techno can vary quite a lot , from underground to experimental to wonky to hard techno/schranz. It can start from 128bpm all up to 150/160bpm it all depends on your liking. Techno for life
Not an expert, but I’ve always felt that techno is more structured like disco - in the sense that both have a continuous and constant rhythm and beat (builds up slowly) while EDM emphasizes heavy drops and immediate buildups. Could be wrong, but I’d say that other than asthetic sounds, I think that these differences seem the most important.
The Prodigy got me into electronic music in general 20 years ago. Most people at that time considered it Techno, or anything else with synths, drum machines, or DJing. I don't understand why there needs to be so many strict subgenres... I just like good electronic music, I don't care what want to label it.
Scrambles the Death Dealer To be fair, a lot of the genres we talk about now have come about in those 20 years since you joined on, and that’s simply because there are so many more different kinds of electronic music out there now, with a hundred times more producers, and we need names for these things so we can talk about them all! But also, many of those developments are not terribly worth your time. A lot of the stuff I listen to (outside of hard dance; and even then...), even though I’ve only been in the scene for half your time, are genres from around 20 years ago as well. What do you think?
This actually helped me alot, for years i was told edm is technically techno. I have always been able to spot edm, but since i didn't grow up with techno, it was always difficult for me to pinpoint it, but after watching this, i don't get how it was hard for me too differentiate the two.
Exactly and the sub genres go by many names, house music, deep house, tech house, progressive house, disco, and so forth future bass, bass house, and so on and so on but rookies that have no knowledge define anything as EDM and its giving it a bad rep, cause niggas like steve aokie and chainsmokers are smearing a good genre and sending it downhill as embarrassment
False: EDM stands for "Egregious Drops for Monkeys", the monkeys being each and every EDM fan. Techno is sophisticated music for sophisticated people. EDM is for scum. And to say Techno is a sub-genre of EDM makes the same amount of sense as saying Jazz is a sub-genre off Metal because they both are genres of drum-driven styles of music.
EDM is a new term, so i wouldn't say techno is a subgenre of EDM , its like saying grappling or kickboxing is a branch of MMA.. MMA is also a new term. .. i dont know how old you are but the term EDM never existed when i was going to raves in the 90s and 2000s, you go to underground rave party there's separate rooms for house, techno, trance .. you name it... The music industry just trying to put all these into one category as "EDM" but it's all different in their own way
i get the point of the video. people kept calling all EDM "techno" for a while lol... you can still call techno "EDM" and not be wrong since the term EDM just means electronic music, which is an umbrella term for anything electronic sounding... but most people wouldn't use the term EDM that way, they would probably use it for the "danceable" electronic music you would hear in clubs or those "raves" (even though those of us who have been in the electronic music scene for a long time would NOT call those raves since they are mostly mainstream EDM artists, and they are events you can buy tickets to and are well known to the public. real raves, don't really go on much anymore as far as i know, they feature unknown underground artists and are not announced more than a few days in advance and used to get shut down by police raids a lot)
Thank you! I hate to give away my age but, a couple years ago, my 23 year old daughter told me she went to a rave. After looking into it, I found out that it was just an afterparty for Ultra. The raves I went to back in the day would have flyers that would give you directions to a place and then you would sometimes have to get directions at that place to another place and that is where the party would be. Sometimes, the party would just be a few stacks of speakers, a couple lights and a nitrous tank but, those were the best ones. Those are the ones that would last all night. When they got too big, that's when they got busted
I watched this again and you know what seems obvious to me, real techno is hypnotic and your brain immediately syncs with it while EDM is like an annoying alarm clock "hey listen to me !!!"
EDM is not a genre, that was big room and dub step you were listening too, EDM stands for electronic dance music, ie music using computers and synths NOT guitar and drums, and yes of course there are drums in EDM but not in a band like setup
If Wikipedia defines EDM has any kind of electronic music whose purpose is to make you dance, it doesn't mean that that's what happens in the real world. Just look at the reality. In recent years EDM has detached greatly from that definition because of the spread in the US of what back in Europe we used to call the commercial side of electro, progressive and deep house, and dubstep (and more recently trap and bass music). People started to like all those genres of music, and djs began mixing them in the same set, calling the music they would play EDM simply because all those tracks are electronic dance music. However, none of those djs would have said they play EDM back in the early 2000s, and, more importantly, they would never play techno in their sets today. Hence, techno is not EDM nowadays. Simply because EDM doesn't mean anymore any kind of electronic dance music, but I would say it's more a specific kind of electronic music where the tracks' bpm ranges from 124ish bpm (deep house like Major Lazer) to 140 bpm (dubstep like Marshmello), where there is a intense use of catchy melody and vocals, and where drums and bass aren't particularly sophisticated nor researched. While techno tracks have the same range of bpm, the bpm in a techno set would hardly be changed, conversely from what happens constantly in EDM sets. I'll stop here regarding the musical differences between the two genres, because they're obvious in the video. Anyways, the two kinds of music do not overlap, no matter how you name them: they differ in their nature (sounds, design, production) and in their use (purpose, crowd, locations). However, I'm sure these definitions won't hold in a few years from now. I see very likely that the commercial sides of drum n bass and techno will find a much larger crowd (as it has been happening for the last 10 years), and they will be included in EDM sets at some point.
I stopped reading after he said Major Lazer does deep house. And techno doesn't just stay in a close bpm range. They can very well go to 138bpm plus. And go low 100's.
Jeff Mills is Techno. Kenny Larkin is Techno. The Advent is Techno. Mad Mike Banks is Techno. Steve Stoll is Techno. Rob Acid is Techno. Hardfloor from germany are Techno. The sound of Detroit is Techno. The sound of Berlin like TRESOR, BERGHAIN, etc. are Techno. Skrillex and musicians like him are commercial pop dance or just EDM.
Tell the people that the difference is not just in the music, its at the people too. Techno People are open minded and without any prejudices, you find a lot of new friends and everybody is helpful. Its like that hippy thing back in the 60s. EDM is just a Kirmes-Version of all that.

Some people love techno, other ones love EDM, this is life and music is diversity and freedom. Let people listen what they want to listen to. I do not love Big Room House at all or Trap music, but it's not really interesting to compare genres like that...
EDM is an umbrella term, created by corporate suits in the Content® manufacturing industry, to describe something they didn't understand but needed to "brand" for marketing purposes. Techno is included in that umbrella term, like it or not. It'd be better to say that Techno is not Liquid Drum 'n Bass, or Trap, or Ambient, or any of the other many types of electronic music, because even giving lip service to the term "EDM" only serves to legitimise it, when in fact it should be abolished. "EDM" is an insult to every _actual_ genre of electronic music,. not just Techno.
WebMint Euuuuu......you're taste of music is disgusting!! Your opinion is shit! Hahahhaa but I listen to both commercial & underground so my taste is shitter than yours!
Looks like the term EDM has changed its meaning. Last time I checked EDM meant just "electronic dance music", a blanket term covering all danceable genres of electronic music, including house, techno, trance, drum&bass, breakbeat, hardcore and so on (as opposed to synthesiser electronic music or avantgarde). Now I guess it means just some sub- sub-genre of house. People do like to complicate things needlessly.
It hasnt changed its meaning its just that it has also became a sub genre and is somewhat what you would call Big Room: EDM is a sub genre of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) EDM is that big commercial sound you hear a lot these days. Its a mash of various styles of dance music, incl. Trance, House, Pop Dance, Electro, Progressive, Hardstyle EDM the sub genre doesnt stand for anything as far as most people know.
Techno is like a sculpture which changes slowly; EDM remains yoked to traditional song structure with its peaks and troughs. Techno doesn’t really establish strong expectations in the listener. It doesn’t signpost it’s harmonic/rhythmic development so much as point you BACK at these developments when they have already been made without you being able to clearly hear it. Techno disassembles the attention (like lots of classical music) whereas EDM focuses it. Techno subverts the ego; EDM asserts it. Techno is anarchic and subversive; EDM valorises the individual, the consumer. Techno is philosophy; EDM is sophistry.
I'm a metal head and this is my first experience with techno, and not my thing. but all things aside I have respect for you die hard techno fans because I thought metal heads were the only ones that struggle with miss labeling and such
Yeah I respect people who are really passionate about their music of any kind. But too much gatekeeping and snobbery which Techno has can be really annoying as aTechno fan especially when artists try anything new.
Yes, Whatever sounds like '80's "707 drum machine loops" they promote as techno, but it isn't. And whatever else they are promoting as 'not techno', is actually something that they can't understand, because it's a few decades ahead in time.
jane doe lol, yeah, apparently. I dunno, I'm just sitting here happy with my AFX and mu-Ziq and the likes. Maybe I should do a video on the difference between IDM and techno.
Being a drum n bass boy even I can tell the difference between techno and EDM. I like a bit of techno sometimes my first experience of techno was in 2002 at an illeagal rave were techno was being played most of the weekend.
I've been a Junglist soldier, fighting to keep the jungle alive, for a long, long time. But even so I still need to go experience Techno and Progressive House mixes to scratch a certain itch that Jungle can't.
Oh God NO!!! When I first read that "Good Techno Music" I was like "huh??? Seems kinda accurate! Ellen really gets it?" but then what played afterwards was the music that they ACTUALLY showcased??? HOLY MOTHER OF CHRIST, CAN YOU PLEASE SWITCH TOPICS, YOU GAY OLD BITCHES??....
I grew up through the 90's listening to house and techno. I still have a lot of old techno and house cd's that are over 20 years old. To be honest, the 'techno' that I heard in this video is not techno to me. It's something else. It's difficult to categorize this shit now days. It was a lot more clear back then, the differences. It's all 'electronic music', obviously, but it's not always clear that something is purely Trance, purely this or that now. It gets frustrating, and it's obvious from all the comments I see that not very many people actually know or agree with each other, which supports the fact that there are so many electronic music genres and sub genres now that it's inevitable that it will get lumped into an super genre when it should be in some sub genre. When it comes down to it, who fucking cares anymore? I don't even know what to call some of this shit now days. All I know is that It's electronic music, and some of it sucks, some of it is GREAT. I think Trance is probably the easiest to pick out now days because of how it makes you feel. There's a reason why it's called Trance. I'm still trying to figure the rest out.
spacemanjupiter Yeah. The examples used in this video aren't really the proper stuff, they are actually tech house and minimal tracks. I can also agree with Total Recall this time.
The stuff in this video is actually real techno. The genre has evolved a lot since the 90's, as has any genre. Electronic music production has been popular ever since the 90's, and artists started creating more and more cocktails of different genres to innovate, to stay ahead of the competition. So the lines between genres naturally become less visible. Back in the 90's it was still new and exiting, as time goes on it becomes harder and harder to retain that freshness to the genre. The philosophy of techno music has always been to create a continuous vibe with a strong focus on heavy drum patterns to keep people dancing for hours, even days on end. That philosophy is still there, and the vibes at most techno raves are still incredible. You have to experience a modern rave to really understand this. I meet many veteran ravers on raves nowadays who all say the same thing, the rave has never died. The face has changed, but the heart has not. It's the nostalgia that makes many veteran ravers feel disconnected with modern techno. Many veteran ravers miss their young wild years more than they miss the techno from back then. Hearing the music from back then brings them back, the modern techno doesn't. Heres a proper modern techno set with a strong touch of the old school: /watch?v=Fn7K9MCRJT0
spacemanjupiter Indeed, from 1989 I recall all this as just being called rave music (in the UK) as opposed to mainstream top 10 with a few acceptable dance tunes thrown in for the masses. You were either into it or you hated it, no in-between because it wasn't just music, it was a lifestyle.

I must say, I really enjoy Japanese techno, it has a decent bit of variation. Music artists such as ken ishii and 7th gate are just plain awesome (and slightly influenced by Detroit techno)
Is me! But seriously I started with NCS, then W&W, Martin garrix, deadmau5, then finally this year got into some Stephan bodzin and now a buddy of mine (FEYLN) has gotten me into techno. Fun journey, hate these gatekeepers in the comments
Techno belongs to EDM you clueless fucktards. EDM is not genre, it is umbrella term for all electronic music genres. Dubstep, House, trance, Drum&Bass, Drumstep, Hardstyle, Future Bass and Trap, they all can be called EDM in general. So get your facts correct, smartass.
I like how my friends always say I’m weird for liking house, progressive house, vocal trance/ trance, dirty house, psychedelic trance, techno, etc. and I’m honestly glad I don’t hear it in their cars or house or for most in other peoples houses in general since they’d just kill that music and over play it like everyone does w music these days! Only real fans of good electronic music should stay in a small community and let these kids today think edm is the only electronic music that exists
Like the video but as a Berliner I can tell you: Claire is kinda right here. Berghain opens Saturday 11:59 and goes till Monday morning/midday.... You cannot usually come Friday and stay till Monday cause Friday is only panorama bar
what if i told you that Edm ( Electronic-dance-music) is nothing else but a generalization of all electronically created music. Edm is not Techno but Techno is Edm. Dubstep is Edm, House is Edm. Those genres are just different but gennerally speaking it is all electronically created music and therefore it is all Edm.
Dance Music is like Snap, Mr. President or Dj Bobo in the 90s. Something like David Guetta today. Techno is electronic Music, not electronic dance music
Some of the songs non-listeners think are techno are actually house, electro house and/or trance. (EDIT) This comment definitely could've originally been worded better. Also, big room, while it isn't a genre in and of itself, it's a subgenre of electro house.
WebMint Droplex Is minimal Techno...the other thing you said Is minimal only bro. Minimal Techno Is when you have the clip bases of minimal and the bass and beat of Techno.
Techno is a sub-genre like House, Trance, Trap and Dubstep of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) but recently EDM has become a synonymous with Big Room House which is a sub-sub-sub-genre of EDM, sub-sub-genre of House and sub-genre of electro house. I'm not even kidding its actually that confusing.
The term EDM is arround since about 2010. It's mainly an US thing. So no, EDM ist not the main category of electronic music. It is an marketing term of the US music industry. So the term EDM is mainly used for the electronic music which is currently popular in the US. I'm from Switzerland and in my childhood, we had Techno, House and Electro. Everything else was a sub-genre of one of those. And then arround 2010: Boom, every Website started to write about EDM. For example: I listen to Hardstyle. So I say that I listen to Hardstyle. I don't go arround and say that I'm listening to EDM. The early Hardstyle was a mix between Hardcore/Gabber and Trance. So for me it's a sub-genre of Techno and House. And Techno evolved out of House. And Rave music which also evolved out of Techno and House. And I simply hate the term EDM because it makes as much sence to me as if I would threw Rock, Metal and Folk in one bucket and call it SASM (Sing and String Music). *Hears a song with an guitar in it* "I like SASM" (You see where I going there) And please don't put Techno and House on the same level as Dubstep and Trap.
I think people are letting there opinions get in the way of facts Fact:The Term EDM(electonic dance music) was first used as early as 1985 in the US Fact: EDM is not a genre it is a collection of genres Fact: Electronic music is music that uses electonic instruments Fact: Dance music is music that is designed to be danced to Fact: Any genre that is Both electonic and dance is EDM Fact: Techno, House, Trap, Dubstep, Trance and other genres of music are genres that are electonic and people dance to therefore these genres are EDM Fact: Skrillex has made Brostep Fact: Brostep is a sub-genre of Dubstep Fact: People sometimes confuse what Techno is and call all EDM genres Techno Fact: People sometimes confuse Big Room House to be the only type of music that is EDM Opinion that I agree with: Techno, House and Trance are much better then Trap and Brostep Opinion that I agree with: Brostep is the worst sub-genre of Dubstep and ruined the genre Opinion that I agree with: Big Room House is very commercialied genre of EDM
Vladimir Burnin accurate I never knew the term big room house so I called is "standard edm" because I wanted to acknowledge that EDM is actually far more general.
I LOVE this video, hilarious! Such s a good explanations and examples. Thanks man! Now this will be my answer whenever someone asks me about Techno and Berghain :)
Techno originates from House and Electro. Techno is completely syncopated, looks for unique and futuristic sounds, has abstract rhythms, drum effects and feels like Funk. Early artists are Juan atkins, Kenny larkin, Jeff mills, Dan curtin and many others.
Seems to me the biggest difference is the crowd. Oversimplifying things here, but: those who just want to party VS those who want to feel more of s personal connection with the music
All of these "techno" picks sound more Tribal than Techno. Then again I listened to Techno in the early 90s and definitions change all of the time. But back in the 90s, the stuff you posted would be called Tribal.
Yeah back in the day that would've been considered techno, but I was thinking more of the lines of anything from Le Petit Prince Records, which is a bit more minimalistic than that but also pretty driving as far as rhythm goes without sounding too tribal.
Tommorowland Alex Thats not techno, "acid ted vs the pranksters - respec" THATS TECHNO!!! Seriously though, let people listen to what they want, its all preference.... Somebody else can always be elitist about what they consider to be *true* techno (or any genre)
If you go by the european definition of techno, which completely ignores Detroit: Techno is industrial and experimental music not meant for dancing. Minimal tech is related to techno, but was actually born our of the Glitch movement(which was wider and more interesting in scope). Most of your examples are darker house, and tech-house tracks. I'd only classify the last one as definitely a techno track. If there's a four on the floor kick with claps - it's house music, acid house, tech house or club trance.
Me and some mates visited toronto recently (from the uk) and found a techno rave and went to it. It was absolutely incredible, proper gritty venue, less than 100 people, good hard techno. The people from canada that came with us left early cause they were expecting "Rave" EDM music.

U guys are fucking stupid
EDM is a genre „electronic dance music“ its a genre for all music thats produced with synthesizer or drum machines
On the surface, the 4/4 beat is king and there is a lot of repetition, but if you listen closely,
no two bars of the track are the same.
Then there is the wacky stupid, tasteless stuff, because the music industry and nightclubs attract dicks, and no self respecting pop culture takes itself too seriously.
good analysis. It's about a pattern rather than a 'tune'.
Very good explanation!
you hit the nail on the head, this series took me back to the ecstasy dens of the late 80's and early 90's....... i remember being tranced out ... now I am an old fart in my 50's but never lost the beat :-)
techno is the original trance music. my number one electronic dance music.
Perfect explanation man
I've been listening to techno for about 30 years now - and I'm still not bored of the genre, nor has it gotten stale but constantly reinventing the ideas of rhythm and sound.
I hope I'll be the same in 30 years too 👌
i'll Dancing till my very last breath ... started circa '99 all day .. every day anywhere & ... my body speaks more than words
How does a genre centred around the same 4 on the floor beat "reinvent ideas of rhythm and sound"? Just curious
Thank you!
I couldn't explain it to myself better than how you you put it, on point
😲
Your analytical description of what the essence of techno is portrays a deep respect for the music. Too bad all other fans have zero respect for, in fact even disrespect, the music, using it only as a tool to accompany their drug trips.
Seriously, does anyone seriously wanna tell me these people actually care about the music? Ridiculous.
Now that we've cleared up what Techno and what EDM is, now we should start explaining people the difference between Techno, House and Trance and what prefixes like "Acid", "Psy", "Dark" and "Hard" indicate.

The whole purpose of techno is to chill, with long repeating beats, melodies and tunes. What I like about techno is that when I'm not listening to it, I can have a certain part of a techno song in my head. Or of course some random beat or tune that would fit right into a Techno song.
i feel like you start to hear stuff that is not even there on really hypnotic techno like planetary assault systems
Very simple: Techno emulates the sound of the Industrial Age. Like stepping into a factory and hearing the sounds the machines produce. Or the sound of an steam engine (train), etc.
EDM is just an umbrella term. Techno falls under that umbrella.
Well... actually Techno is an umbrella term as well. It's also a genre by itself. I think the comparison presented here is pretty good.
In a nutshell your electronic mainstream junk is not techno. Cheers... I am going to Tresor now :P.

No one ever heard of the term 'EDM' before 2010. And i have been raving since the 90s.
There actually was a world and a scene before you where born you now.
Techno is the umbrella term EDM is just a sub genre used for commercial pop electronic music for basic people
EDM is not a genre at all and stands for Electronic Dance Music (I guess I didn't learn anything to you).

And the track at 4:14 wasn't edm either..
Classical music is for nerds.
But honestly, if you make a classic techno track and put acid arps in it it becomes "acid house". It's still the exact same style as techno, at least the song he used in the video. Bass heavy, kick focus, repetetive short melody = techno.

If it sounds like your washing machine broke, then it's good techno. :-)
If that's what it sounds like to you, then you probably don't listen to techno.
If it does it’s more like dubstep
HAHAHHAAHAAH LMAO
Mario Mari wtf are u writing, I stopped reading after words about marshmello producing dubstep
@@neyvtm9088 i really hope you are kidding

It hasnt changed its meaning its just that it has also became a sub genre and is somewhat what you would call Big Room:
EDM is a sub genre of EDM (Electronic Dance Music)
EDM is that big commercial sound you hear a lot these days. Its a mash of various styles of dance music, incl. Trance, House, Pop Dance, Electro, Progressive, Hardstyle
EDM the sub genre doesnt stand for anything as far as most people know.

I'm still trying to figure the rest out.
yes this is not techno!
check real techno : Raw Power Organisation - 1991 And I Just Begun
spacemanjupiter Yeah.
YEAAHH...you're my man. To me, that's also real Techno...
The way people poke fun at these genres make me laugh. Missed the boat on it all imo.
Techno is the truth
Techno = Real Thing
@Unaesthetic Boi your happiness
Thank you.
You're welcome.
I love it when a clan comes together.
Genres in chronological order (quite confident about these, but I might have some of the more nuanced house genres wrong)
0:00 Tech house
0:16 (Jazz-ish?) techno in background
1:07 Techno
1:20 Pretty standard house, with some hints towards moombahton
1:52 Techno
1:55 Tech house?
2:04 Techno
2:24 Bigroom, pretty low effort sound design
2:32 Techno, with nice noise percs on wide
2:52 Bigroom again, but a better example
3:03 some kind of idm-esque techno, the melody is nonexistent
3:33 Sandstorm, good old trance, it's evident in the drums and the chords
3:44 Back to techno, with a very detuned lead
4:14 Brostep, but one of the best songs of dubstep in the early 2010s and I cannot bear seeing it discredited.
4:24 Indeed back to techno
4:47 Inconclusive, just try explaining the differences in words - techno is built on simplicity, rhythm and ambience, while pretty much all other EDM subgenres are built on melodies and bass
My favourite example that's used for "real techno" would be at 3:02. It's also the most techno sounding track in this video.
What club or festival is that ?
I think it's important to note there's a loooooooot of different styles, shades and variations of techno.
Lots and lots of people don't seem to realise that, sadly.
People don’t know... they just think... techno is specific and only one :) Love it
Techno drives people crazy the music alone is a drug.
I must say, I really enjoy Japanese techno, it has a decent bit of variation. Music artists such as ken ishii and 7th gate are just plain awesome (and slightly influenced by Detroit techno)
Takaaki Itoh!
Those EDM lovers will eventually evolve and become a part of our Techno family. Just give dem time!
We dont want them.
We'd rather not so fuck off.
This video as a whole is so cringy lol
Muh secret club, muh true culture. And I even fully agree on the basics
LOL
Edm is my religion. This.makes.me
cringe.
“I heart techno” i cringed so hard at this
believe me, this you-tuber is drugged
This video lowkey changed my life, I used to be a martin garrix fanboy, i think i even left a hate comment here a few years back. But now im reformed.
Like the video but as a Berliner I can tell you: Claire is kinda right here. Berghain opens Saturday 11:59 and goes till Monday morning/midday.... You cannot usually come Friday and stay till Monday cause Friday is only panorama bar
can confirm that
what if i told you that Edm ( Electronic-dance-music) is nothing else but a generalization of all electronically created music.
Edm is not Techno but Techno is Edm. Dubstep is Edm, House is Edm. Those genres are just different but gennerally speaking it is all electronically created music and therefore it is all Edm.
you can't say techno vs. edm because that would be techno vs. techno (and other edm) and that makes no sense
get your shit together kids
Dance is not Techno my friend. And Techno is not Dance
Pu Muckl it's fucking edm elctronic dance music!!! every song which is created with a computer is edm
Dance Music is like Snap, Mr. President or Dj Bobo in the 90s. Something like David Guetta today. Techno is electronic Music, not electronic dance music
Pu Muckl go on wikipedia fuckhead hahah
Inspired to go back and listen to some old Dave Clarke essential mixes. The baron of Techno
Clarke and Luke Slater ftw
short answer: techno is a spacey dark form of house and electro
Some of the songs non-listeners think are techno are actually house, electro house and/or trance.
(EDIT) This comment definitely could've originally been worded better. Also, big room, while it isn't a genre in and of itself, it's a subgenre of electro house.
DarkenedX08 - Tiffany The techno examples in this video aren't exactly techno. Sorry!
Ricardo Pineda It's minimal techno. Not techno. Hehe
They Are kids, they dont know the good things
WebMint Droplex Is minimal Techno...the other thing you said Is minimal only bro. Minimal Techno Is when you have the clip bases of minimal and the bass and beat of Techno.
"Big room" is not a genre either
*Hears a song with an guitar in it* "I like SASM" (You see where I going there)
And please don't put Techno and House on the same level as Dubstep and Trap.
And please don't put Techno and House on the same level as Dubstep and Trap.
God, please don't!
You were right to begin with, don't let anyone confuse you with their weird "english" street slang.
I think people are letting there opinions get in the way of facts
Fact:The Term EDM(electonic dance music) was first used as early as 1985 in the US
Fact: EDM is not a genre it is a collection of genres
Fact: Electronic music is music that uses electonic instruments
Fact: Dance music is music that is designed to be danced to
Fact: Any genre that is Both electonic and dance is EDM
Fact: Techno, House, Trap, Dubstep, Trance and other genres of music are genres that are electonic and people dance to therefore these genres are EDM
Fact: Skrillex has made Brostep
Fact: Brostep is a sub-genre of Dubstep
Fact: People sometimes confuse what Techno is and call all EDM genres Techno
Fact: People sometimes confuse Big Room House to be the only type of music that is EDM
Opinion that I agree with: Techno, House and Trance are much better then Trap and Brostep
Opinion that I agree with: Brostep is the worst sub-genre of Dubstep and ruined the genre
Opinion that I agree with: Big Room House is very commercialied genre of EDM
Vladimir Burnin accurate
I never knew the term big room house so I called is "standard edm" because I wanted to acknowledge that EDM is actually far more general.
"EDM is not a Real Thing“
(Beardyman somewhere in Seattle)
EDM literally just means Electronic Dance Music lol.
Wow genious, how long did it take you to figure that one out?
Captain Baddboy I’m not a genious, but I am a genius.
@@Exosphere._ Wow you're so smart, do you want a medal or something for that, mr captain obvious idiot?
Techno is edm, but not all edm is techno
Exosphere no. No you aren’t.
Seems to me the biggest difference is the crowd. Oversimplifying things here, but: those who just want to party VS those who want to feel more of s personal connection with the music
err no
Edm - event driven marketing , bro step - robots taking
0:35 her pronunciation was spot on. The "ai" cluster is pronounced "aye" in German, as in "high" or "cry". Saying "Berg-hayn" is incorrect.
EDM = Electronic Dance Music... Therefore, techno is EDM.
All of these "techno" picks sound more Tribal than Techno.
Then again I listened to Techno in the early 90s and definitions change all of the time. But back in the 90s, the stuff you posted would be called Tribal.
yes this is not techno!!
The Immortals - Techno Syndrome THIS IS TECHNO!
Yeah back in the day that would've been considered techno, but I was thinking more of the lines of anything from Le Petit Prince Records, which is a bit more minimalistic than that but also pretty driving as far as rhythm goes without sounding too tribal.
Amir Sharar old twat
Amir Sharar tit
Tommorowland Alex
Thats not techno, "acid ted vs the pranksters - respec" THATS TECHNO!!!
Lets talk about progressive trance...
Dalton C ooh good one
it's wonderful
Its cool
Tina Einstin What about Progrssive Trance?
It's shit. Psytrance is the way. Prog is for kids
Chicago = House, manchester = acid house, Detroit = techno. It's all the same really. A tune is a tune
@Remco Roodackers shut up, inbred
@Remco Roodackers there are 50% chance your parents are cousins and 50% chance they're siblings
So Techno is like hipsters of EDM.
Just kiding big fan of eletronic music since im a child
IDM is hipster of EDM
@@gonzaloretamal9401 IDM is more like the iamversmart person or eccentric and massively detached from external reality
Me and some mates visited toronto recently (from the uk) and found a techno rave and went to it. It was absolutely incredible, proper gritty venue, less than 100 people, good hard techno. The people from canada that came with us left early cause they were expecting "Rave" EDM music.
I was ready to smash the Like button , when I saw he wrote “absolute shit” to Skrillex’s song !! Shame 👎🏻 respect other genres
Skrillex is shit though.
The (Techno) tunes in this vid...5 Star!
EDM is usually the general term for any electronic music lol. But I agree that many mix up techno with house music and etc.
EDM is an umbrella term for all styles and genres of dance music that is electronic. Techno is a genre within the EDM umbrella.
