    With regards to explaining the concept of police abolition to people who are unfamiliar with it, I usually start by asking what the police actually do, and then showing that all of those functions can be done much better by alternative organisations that don't have the legal power to murder someone

    We should be demanding that the cops be run more like a fire department. Rather than armed patrols, officers spend most of the day at a "firehouse," training on their down time and only are deployed during an emergency. Most 911 calls should be handled by social workers. These are demands we should be making

      I'm not american so I don't really have a horse in this race but I've seen some stuff floating around the internet related to this idea of defunding the Police, and/or limiting what instances they should be called upon, do you really think this is viable? In what situations to which police is now called do you think they'd be unnecessary? I'm European so I'd say that a much bigger problem in the USA is gun control, I'm past my 20s and I have never in my life seen or touched a firearm, so in my eyes gun culture is the bigger problem. I'd understand if you don't have answers to my questions, but watching this whole thing from the sidelines has made me curious.

      Trade unions(which are better paying jobs)did. The labor unions didn't.. Trade unions were from the beginning formed out of the old artisan guilds (which were of course exclusionary and racist), which in turn under Industrial Capital became a Labor Aristocracy. Of course they excluded Blacks and then again they've been excluding just about everyone else for the last 60 plus years. Trade unions under Capitalism are Labor Aristocracy. Labor unions are more democratic, socially conscious, and as a result are more sympathetic to American Black plight. The labor movement in any industrialized country is split into these factions. Don't you know this or are you just a shit eating moron?..

    The unorginised nature of these protests speaks to the failure of online left. Sure, we have collected significant funds for groups that actually do stuff like bail funds, and bailproject, but somehow the celebrities the "movement" of online left revolves around manage to be just as qlueless than their followers when it comes to protesting.
    There are community leaders, who are not male models and bootlickers. Yet information about those does not get effectively spread. That is the one thing what online leftist could actually be useful in - spreading information and marketing movements that actually coordinate in meaningful manner. Yet that is not happening.
    And it makes sense: you can shittalk on internet for people around a globe, with very little effort. But to actually collect sufficient amounts of information about actual organisers to pass on to that wide followerbase is a huge task. The wider your online community, the wider the gap between internet and reality gets.
    Yet if someone managed to cross that gap, the effects would be immidiate and huge. It would essentially supercharge the most difficult part of actual political action: getting people together in coordinated manner. Just having people gather in real life with shared agreement that they should listen to some form of leadership, and that they should be open to work towards the shared short term goals set by that leadership, or discuss said goals, face to face, in coordinated manner, under that powerstructure, is the hardest part.

    • @filmbuffoon6418
      @filmbuffoon6418 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The online left echoes the issues with the left in most modern democracies. The issue is that America has never really addressed its underlying grievances with each other. Liberals and leftists have become uncomfortable bedfellows against conservatives and fascists, but leftists priorities are too left wing for other parties to even consider. Realistically social democracy is the best we can do but it will always be undone by Democratic and Republican Party machines within a few electoral cycles.
      We need ranked choice voting and an end to the electoral college for real reform. We need to see where the American people stand on parties and political agendas without coercion from undemocratic voting processes. I realize this is all a pipe dream, but so is the concept of a United American government through this century.

    • @DownUFO
      @DownUFO 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      How so? I forgot which points I’ve heard from this compared to his vlogs, but he’s been advocating for a sort of “ego death” in order to be more mentally fit for revolutionary action. As in, understanding that it may never be utopia for us in the present, but the work still needs to be done for the sake of creating the metaphorical cathedral that would eventually take shape over multiple lifetimes. To push the boulder up the hill without expecting the reward of reaching the top and calling it a day. Which makes sense, because if we really want the world to have a utopian leftist society, it would have to take years, and nobody alive today is guaranteed to see it. And if we all throw up our hands at the notion of all this work only being done for the people in our place decades from now, then everyone would stop and it would delay the result for another hundred years and another generation would have to have the same conversation. Thus, we have to imagine Sisyphus happy, understand that there’s a worthwhile life to live in pushing this boulder of leftism up the hill of capitalism, so that people/we are still willing to do the work.

      @@DownUFO Yes, but that is all just a refined and palatable version of the old "Are gays/blacks being too PUSHY demanding rights? Most Americans think so, so they aught to settle down and wait for their time, lest they spoil it for everyone." Leave fussing over optics to stuffy politicians, reject the assumption that any good thing must inherently take multiple lifetimes when everything awful might crash down tomorrow. State our end goals, aiming for half way up the hill gets us quarter of the way.

    if matt could summon the energy to even read even a _synopsis_ of "white fragility" i think he'd find himself a likeminded ally in the fight against white guilt and counterproductive attention hogging in DiAngelo. it's a shame he concluded what this literature says based on what sounds like a simple misreading of the title. i cannot quite figure out what point he was trying to make when he outed the author as "italian". if this is as much sense as he makes when talking about a topic I have even a passing familiarity with, does this mean I've been wrong to assume he knows anything when he's riffing authoritatively about topics I'm ignorant of?
