I am in the earlier stages of this disease, with occasional coolness of the feet, mismatched ankle pressures, and pain on long walks. Since my brother's best friend died at 58 due to complications of leg amputation (and no, that diabetic wouldn't quit smoking), I've been very apprehensive. I found this video VERY helpful to understanding the disease, and the prognosis values are encouraging. I must say most strongly, the U.S. medical community does not seem nearly so interested or capable about getting helpful and useful information out to the public. Thanks SO much!
I was diagnosed with this 11 years ago and I couldn’t walk very far at all. The consultant offered me bypass surgery which I declined because I couldn’t face such major surgery. He put me on aspirin and I was already on statins because I had high blood fat because this runs in the family. I gave up smoking and I’ve lost 2.1/2 stones and it seems to have improved as I can walk much further without my legs hurting. The consultant has said he won’t see me any more (I’ve been seeing him once a year for 11 years) I feel annoyed about this as I still have the condition of course so is this because of the state of the health service or what?
I'm having to stop and it's very hard to do. The alternative is frightening, so I'm doing my damnedest to give up. I'm waiting on surgery for a stent to be inserted.

Doc! Thanks for telling if I am there for the next 5 or 15 years. I underwent PAG & CAG together and needed Angioplasty by Balooning the Popliteal artery (Right Leg). I still have pain (2 days post procedure). I was a smoker & because of Chronic Pancreatitis, had developed Diabetes Mellitus... 🙄

My mother has been bedbound with a foot ulcer for almost a year,currently trying to get a 2nd opinion as she hasnt been put forward for angioplasty by the vascular surgeon that saw her,maybe cause she has 3 blockages in the leg,SFA,popliteal and peroneal. the only good thing is she hasnt been able to smoke for the last 10 months! Two questions ,most of the youtube videos Ive seen are American ,do they treat this condition more aggresively there?Also I have only seen Atherectomy mentioned in American medical videos,is it not practiced in the UK? Thanks! .
My case could be a little different but show some of the same symptoms. I’ve had 3 total knee replacements on my right knee. In between those 3 knee surgeries there’s been multiple antibioticle spacers put in place instead of a knee along with aggressive Picc line infusion of strong antibiotics to try and kill the infection responsible for a these surgeries. This over the last 6 years. The infection is still in my right leg playing hide and seek. But the scar tissue from these surgeries has greatly reduced circulation in my lower legs. I’m worried the infection will spread to vital organs and been told the easy way out is amputation above my knee. I have limited use of my leg and can’t bend it due to scar tissue and lots of swelling that doesn’t go away. I’m starting to get fatigued and out of breath much easier now. I’m 60 yrs old. And smoked 10 cigarettes a day off and on for 20 years. I would like to save my leg if I could bend it again. So I need second opinions from doctors who have ideas on my treatment. I was very active in sports especially surfing right up to my first surgery now I can do nothing. Thank you for your time.
I am in a great deal of discomfort and been told that the vascular consultant considers my doppler results to warrant a routine consultation, unfortunately there is a waiting time of 18months and I'm afraid of it becoming worse, of course for a serious amount of money he can see me privately next week!
A surgeon bypassed blocked femur artery from asc aorto to popliteal artery (+CABG), during this he tunnel the graft through abdomen cavity, is this right or wrong?
one question : what kind of antiplatelet therapy/ anticoagulation would you put your patient on after a synthetic graft vs venous graft? and for how long?
Hi Silvia, that's a very specific question, and a good one. I will see what the vascular surgeons are up to these days and I'll get back to you. Suffice to say though, in the meantime, that patients with peripheral arterial disease should generally be on lifelong antiplatelet therapy (aspirin on clopidogrel) and a statin. Danny
I have the disease... had a bad experience... my foot was pale and extremely cold. Spent last week in the hospital ... my thigh stint had a blood clot and a blockage in my lower leg. It’s getting worse it seems.
7:17 regarding that abpi test. First of all it will compound inaccuracies when measuring bp. To say that both high and low pressures are indicative oh well. I don’t believe you can have arterial disease without calcification (prove me wrong), so that notion for high ratio also makes no sense. If anything, if you have a very low bp at the ankle then you have an ischemic foot, that much should be clear. If you have a high bp there, unclear how that’s even possible quite frankly, other than wrong measurements. The Doppler waveforms would measure stiffness of the arteries.
