While attending the SEMA show in Las Vegas. The Design chief for the original Dodge Viper concept vehicle, Tom Gale, observed many performance features on the sport compact cars. He invisioned a factory "Tuner" car with many of the same performance features. A speacial team was put together at Chrysler to work on the project.
In the year 2000 After several versions of the prototype, the company’s Specialty Vehicle Engineering (SVE) team took over the project. In January of 2002, SVE became known as Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO). PVO was officially renamed SRT (Street and Racing Technology) in 2004. The "4" in the SRT-4's name denotes the number of cylinders of the engine.
The first Production SRT-4 was finally released and sold as a 2004 model in late 2003. Powered by a Turbo charged 2.4 L including: stronger crank case webbing, a thicker deck with 11 mm head bolts (vs 10 mm), an oil drain back for the turbo, a cast aluminum structural oil pan, a higher capacity oil pump, a crankshaft of higher hardness steel, improved machining of bearing journals, oil squirters (to cool underside of pistons), eutectic aluminum alloy pistons made specially by Mahle, and forged connecting rods with cracked caps and 9 mm bolts. The cylinder head was also different and included: larger diameter valves and seats, improved exhaust valves and performance camshafts.

interesting facts, neon was sold in limited numbers in the UK as a Chrysler Neon, no SRT versions though, The car didn't seem to suit European tastes and only sold a few, I borrowed one once in early 2000's and thought it was an ok car.

The regular Neon here is unremarkable as well. An affordable family car with good gas mileage. The SRT-4 package and a few mods makes an insane sleeper.
