Now we do need a M539 crossover. Sreten can show us the secrets of the Autobahn, and John can go mad as Gilroy siphons money from the Auto Shenanigans bank accounts for "cleaning supplies"
Lovely car and great that you’re its custodian. I’m a similar custodian of my late uncle’s 2007 Lexus 430GS (60,000 on the clock). Like you, I have the full service history, sales invoice and brochures. I’m treating it to new cam belts, water pump and front shocks next year.
I also have a 735i E38 - 1996 - in Aspen Grey with M-Parallels. I've noticed your poster a few times and always hoped you'd post about it - thanks for sharing, best of luck with your journey. I used to do Stevenage to Sheffield and back each week in mine and it's long since passed 150,000mi. Registration is BMW 735Y!
As an MoT tester myself, there's one thing that REALLY gets my back up, and that's people presenting a car with no screen wash!!! Wtf!? FFS (some) people, it really isn't that hard! So I hope John, that after you saw the message 7:08 you topped it up (& just didn't mention it), otherwise it'll be the naughty corner for you!😂 Btw, absolutely love the e38s, a mate of mine had a 740i (4.4 ltr) version, beautiful, smooth, quiet, fast and refined, and I love the subdued growl those V8s make!😎 I look forwards to seeing how your 735i does, oh and yea I agree with you about the wheels, I think the 32s are the same pattern my mate's car had. Hmm, interesting, I see you had it MoT'd in May this year, I guess the video release about it has been somewhat delayed? I won't spoil the outcome😉
@bxmachine ah yea, those too really piss me off! It's not like they can't see the wipers aren't doing their job properly! Re tyre pressures, especially when the TPMS light is on!!! I select the advisory 'tyres obviously under-inflated' and add 'tpms light on', maybe it'll get through their brain when it's stuck on the MOT history!? I'll PRS the no screen wash too.
Agreed, John. I recently found out my 528 sport was 'the managers motor' at Milton Keynes BMW when it was new. He used it as a demo before taking it as his personal car. He kept it for years. A very tasty spec.
Perfect John, love me an old, sentimentally attached, classic motor ❤ coupled with the fact I'm a petrol head, engineer, lover and owner of classic vehicles, I'm looking forward to this
I had a 735i and then a 750iL, I loved them both. And even better I was a chauffeur, so I didn't have any of the running costs to worry about. I'm looking forward to following this series. Best of luck.
I have to say that this car does look really nice. Does look well maintained without any damage to it. Those older BMW cars were so reliable and they still are today.
If I'd have been drinking coffee at the mention of giving your mechanic a good finger, I'd have spit it out all over my tablet, but as I wasn't, I didn't, so that's all good then. A detour from the A road series. Refreshing!
Thats lovely. My Grandad had a Hillman Imp - not really the same, but it was immaculate and had only done something like 13000 miles from new. So wish we'd kept it
G'day Jon, WOW! what a lovely story that you have Gilroy as a keepsake from Grandpa, I would have loved to have my Grandpa's Late 60's Holden Kingswood "Betty" but unfortunately it was sent to the wrecker by one of my aunts without even being asked but I did get Grandpa's Victa Lawn Mower which I have plans to pull down & do a restoration on now I am feeling settled in my new home. I am currently reflooring my shed & will be building some new workbenches plus shelving, so maybe Victa & I can spend some time together next year when all that is complete.
Very nice. I'd love to have my grandfather's last car. It was a 1973 Ford LTD. It was all hood and could probably sit a family of five comfortably on the front bench seat. We used to joke that the front bumper arrived five minutes before you did.
What a superb luxury car, your granddad was obviously a discerning gent. I remember seeing Gilroy way back in your motorway services videos. I also have a 1998 BMW, a beautiful one owner E39 I bought this year and I love it. Arguably the best era of BMW.
What a car. Spent yesterday trying to start my friends E38, dead fuel pump :P. What a lovely machine though, its got a flippable coin holder in the dash, and that sliding center console. Perfection.
Excellent, pass...I think so. I have a 96 4.4 E38. I have owned mine for 21 years and 110k now on 210k. It's been an excellent car. I have kept the 16 inch wheels because they work better on the UK roads. Looking forward to the series.
I can relate to this story as I've done the same with Grandads Daihatsu Fourtrak lucky I'm in the motor trade and have unlimited access to tools ramps and more importantly a welder! I now have probably one of the tidiest examples of one still on the road.
It's nice to meet Gilroy. Lovely Beemer. I restore cars for a hobby too (which I also do some light motorsport with), and I really hope that you have someone lined up to sort out the few small areas of bodywork that need attention... 😊
The 1990s were the golden years for BMW (aside form the Rover Group fiasco). I used to own an E36 318i saloon of similar vintage to the E38. Just enough tech to make them reliable but none of the iDrive stuff and umpteen modules found in modern BMWs. I'd have gone with the original wheels but those other wheels are just as good once you'd fitted the new tyres. We are tight-fisted but I will spend money if necessary. I'm sure your grandpa will be looking down on you with pride.
Looking forward to the next episode Beautiful car BMW V8 what more could you ask for. Good luck with the light resto The car deserves the love Brilliant Jon
Internet is right about the Mitch pilots. My E39 is the same year as your E38. It came to me on bubble gum fabricated ditch finders. The car transformed when they were binned for a set of pilots . An excellent subject for a mini series Jon. I also think you touring various sections of the network, in classic and performance cars, would be an interesting watch. Plenty of us around to help with it 👍
Great to meet Gilroy. Looking forward to the road trip "home", and hoping to see more of him. eg. Coast to coast tour Route (A) 66 road trip of UK? or All the best driving roads in each county?
I still miss my ‘94 E38 - I think the E38 is perhaps the loveliest thing BMW made. Mine cost the earth to maintain, but I’m still tempted by another to this day. Or maybe an 8-series. Alas, no driveway space - the only brake on vehicular acquisition syndrome. Really enjoying this, and while I was sorry to hear about your grandfather, it’s nice to see his memory being honoured by refettling his old car and fixing the rust… right? :)
You do realise that, for all practical purposes, 2025 is roughly the day after tomorrow? At least going by the speed with which 2024 seems to whizzed by. I’m having to remember to say 2026 when I properly want to punt something into the long grass ;)
I had a 728i version of this model back in 2005 for a couple of years. I have to say that particular car was not the most reliable electrically, probably the reason for its cheap purchase price, but, engine-wise it was superb.

He was a motorcycle despatch rider in North Africa during the "second small disagreement" and later a driving instructor, so he knew his cars and took care of them. Girlfriend looked after the Mitsi for about ten years until the chassis rust was really too much, but she misses it. My dad died in October, and his car is sat on his drive, none of his grandchildren (now all in their early-mid 20s) want it because none of them have learned to drive.

@alic4788 the fail on 17/8/20 is a joke writer's wet dream.
Some time ago too. Lots of servicing done since then I bet.
Yes.
Absolutely - couldn't bear the suspense! 😁
See I immediately went looking for the reg, but he's pacifically angled almost every shot to not show the reg
"Allo Jon, got a new motor?"
Lovely project car. Make Grandpa proud again. We're all waiting for the next episode already.
Holy fuck, I laughed out loud at 4:30... I'm glad I'm not the only one that enjoys the smell of a new tyre. (That.. and fresh asphalt!)
Huh, who hasn't stopped at the entrance to their garage and slowly inhaled the scent of cars and bikes.
Heady stuff, and something the green weenies will never understand.
My fetish is newly creosoted telegraph poles. BT put one up near me last summer and I have to have a good sniff every time I go past.
Oh yes,fresh asphalt.And creosote too.

I'm 73 years old and I just love the fact that you want your Grandads car on the road.
As a fellow yorkshireman your grandfather's thriftiness is to be applauded
As Arthur Daley once said, "Never pay the right price."
Short arms and deep pockets, the motto of the Peoples Republic of Yorkshire!
I was thinking how very decadant it was for a Yorkshireman to have any BM, let alone a new 7 Series.
Diesel Mondeo would have done the job.
It’s not tight, it’s just being careful!
Jon's a serious rubber enthusiast! Gets my upvote for that. Perv. :)
It's a slippery slope. Ever sniffed an old, wet inner tube? I bet John has.
I also had a Grandpa. This is perfect.

Nice to see somebody actually torqueing wheel bolts / nuts up, instead of just ugga-dugga-ing them with no clue as to how tight they really are.
