Hi guys it'll be interesting to see how the lab performs, its been on my mind to make lab for a while now. Definitely going to give it a go soon. Does lab still work over winter? 👌🤠❤️👍💩🪱💪

It definitely seemed to be on the pile last year. I think it performs a lot like worm casting (and teas). Bacteria on surface goes dormant, but most will stay active in sub-soil throughout the winter ????

Nice looking pile Jason. I just planted some comfrey roots 5-6 weeks ago. Smelly is good when you have greens sitting in water. In total my uncle has given me about 45 bags(Lowe’s / Home depot brown bags) of shredded leaves. It’s pretty crazy

It will be interesting to see how broken down the center of the pile gets by April. I think you have a pretty good chance because of the particle size of the leaves, plus the other amendments you added.
The biggest chore for me in making leaf mold is not so much gathering the leaves from neighbors, but it is in the shredding. Even after double shredding with the lawn mowers, I do not get that fine particle size, awesome. Would be great worm bedding.
A couple notes on oyster shells. I picked up a 3/4 bag at a garage sale a couple years ago for a buck. Did a little looking into using oyster shells and it is best to rinse them with fresh water and pulverize with a grinder of some sort, (particle size) some sources also added to bake to 140F, I never did that.
I picked it up mainly for some grit for the worms, then I started using it in my hot compost. Great idea for the leaf mold bin, oyster shells have more chitin than any other shell fish or crustacean.
The only other thing I personally add to my leaf mold bin are red worms and native leaf mold from a natural area. I look forward to going to Devils Lake State park in the fall to gather leaf duff. All you need is a pinch from different locations to inoculate a pile.
Another great experiment to get around the HOA, good for you!
Take care my friends, Stay Well!!!!

@HamiltonRb awesomeness!! It'll be fabulous come spring !!
Like most answers in gardening, "it depends." What kind of soil do you have in the beds?
We have very heavy clay so anything that helps loosen the soil helps (Perlite, peat etc) but if you already have "loamy" soil, which I suspect you'll have in spring, maybe a little balanced organic fertilizer, broadcast or in the planting holes will set you up for the best season ever !!

Love this type of video, gets me all itching to get back out there, shame its bucketting down outside lol. So watching this gets my own thoughts rolling along as I don't have Lab and I don't have access to wonderful ground down leaves, but I do have 1 year old Oak leaves, and I have a water barrel with Comfrey sludge in (from making liquid comfrey feed) so I wonder if I combined these two if I could get a worthwhile compost. I really need a good storm to add Seaweed to the mix ...
I need to acknowledge how much envy I have with your access to that recycling centre. How lovely they allow you to take as much as you want, in the UK they seem to want to charge for any service. But we have large drops of fresh Woodcip though.

Next time you prepare rice, soak it, strain off the water and store it. You'll have billions of Bacillus. You can add it to comfrey stew, urine or directly to soil, compost. Lactobasillus is made simply adding milk and letting it ferment ;)

How widespread in America is the availability of free municipal woodchip and leaves? I don't know of either being available anywhere in England - old, not New - though we can reasonably easily catch arborists who are pleased to drop off their chip at the end of the working day. Leaves we need to collect from the local park. Leaf decomposition is usually fungal, not bacterial (& only the latter generates heat) so I'm surprised that there was enough available nitrogen for your amendments to raise the temperature as it did last yr - unless the leaves were still partly green, or mixed with grass cuttings. I look forward to the update.

    • @clivesconundrumgarden
      @clivesconundrumgarden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

We came from Victoria, Canada. Golf courses are a golden mine, especially ones that belong to the Autoban Society (no sprays). If there's municipal collection, there's a central processing and trucking yard, well worth a Google search or a couple phone calls, in my opinion.
You're absolutely right about the fungal process, but in our situation here, we need to get it hot to speed up the process. LAB does a great job, but small partical size of material and the volume (fairly large pile) also contribute to an increase in temps. Once the thermophilic bateria die off, I'm counting on a huge increase in saprophytic fungi and hyphae to take over 🤞
Either way there will be multiple beneficial uses come spring !!

@clivesconundrumgarden lol!! I don't know how it popped up for me but they made it seem like it was just this thing that every Canadian knew about so I went down the rabbit hole and discovered it was an old ad only shown in Canada saying you shouldn't believe everything you see. 🤣 Now I need a cute little mini house hippo. Lol!

We got ours at a feed store. They're super cheap, I'm sure you can find them online as well.
      Btw, it turned out awesome!!
