    Awesome tips. Glad I found this. I have never caught an ocean run Atlantic but I consider myself an expert fishing for landlocked salmon. Funny what you said about the big bead bugger.
    The most deadly patterns in my box are nymphs and streamers with large tungsten beads. 3.5 mm- 4- 4.6 mm, size12-8.
    80% of the fish I take with these flies swipe the fly 2inches under the surface on an induced lift. A steady pull to the surface that is the right speed is key. If 1 misses it, you can always get him to attack a few more turns.
    Some days when the fish are in a funk, I will take them jigglling and pounding the heavier beads 6in to a foot off the bottom.
    If fish are in skinnny water, or clear flows, dead drifting unweighted trout nymphs get the job done. A slight twitch in front if the fish can work magic.
    Some of the spots always hold fish . I do not waste much time swinging flies, because systematicly lifting my fly to the surface brings much more action.
    Do the Ocean run Fish have a tendency to behave like this?

      Hi Patrick, thanks for the insight into your fishing! Sea run fish tend to behave very differently, but fly choose and method comes down to speed of water, clarity of water and temperature…. The only time I have seen salmon behave like you describe is on the lower reaches of some of our chalkstreams here in the IK

    I love seeing the bomber in there. I live on the east coast of Canada and brook trout love them too

    Sunray Shadow, definitely a real killer fly. It’s also quite popular for night fishing for
    seatrouts in Denmark. And I love this simple fly, two types of hair, a tube and some herl on top. I use to add two strands of some pearl flash on each side of the wing, and a small plastic propel in front of it...

      Sunray is one of my favourites too, started using it in the 1990’s when guiding in Norway and never looked back. Beautifully simple....

    Great review of salmon flies. I have been tying flies all year and am on my way to Iceland to see if I can trick an Icelandic salmon.....wish me luck. This is my first Atlantic Salmon fishing trip. I have tied most of these patterns.......

    Sunray all day long , awesome pattern, I fish it in the saltwater too for sea trout and other species it takes them all !! The simplest of flies take the greatest amount of fish ..👍

    Have you tried a bomber on Scottish rivers? You hear so many people tell you it doesn't work in the UK, but perhaps they're just scared to try something different!

    All great flies, but personally I will never again go fishing without atleast one Rotenon in my box, its about as effective as its chemical namesake. Heck, I even caught a cod on it once when fishing for seatrout believe it or not lol

    My top ten would only include one the ones you mentioned - the bomber. In fact if I could only fish with fly it would be a bomber. There is nothing better than dry fly fishing for Atlantic salmon. Second point is that you guys cheat! We only use single barb unweighted hooks - treble hooks and weights are for spin fishing. Fair chase!

    • @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing
      @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ron, thanks for your comment! I would take your point and this selection definitely has a bias in favour of European salmon fishing. Judging by your comment reckon you are fishing East coast North America, New Brunswick, Gaspe, Labrador? The main reason we don’t fish bombers so much over here is that our rivers run colder generally and the salmon are less inclined to hit a surface fly. On the hook front that is definitely changed and many now use single hooks on tube flies as they actually hook better and make catch and release much easier. The micro trebles is a different chat altogether as we normally fish them in Iceland in size 16 or even 18… a single in that size would just bend out. Weighted…. Yes…. Guilty as charged! 😀 I think it really stems to the kind of water you are fishing though. If you are fishing very clear water you have more options….

    • @RonScottsalar
      @RonScottsalar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing Yes North America - but the weight thing isn’t a matter of preference - it’s the law (which doesn’t make sense. I believe it was instituted to help prevent snagging or jigging fish but why not just use a big heavy hook if that’s your intent?) As far as small single hooks go - they do in fact hold without bending. The issue is more about tippet size because of the small hook eye, you can’t go heavy. I’ve only landed a few on size 16 & 18 flies - actually not that much fun because you can’t pull very hard and I think it wears on the fish. I remember reading (and I can’t find it now about Lee Wulff’s 20/20 club. To be accepted into the club you had to land a 20 lb salmon on a size 20 hook. I also believe he managed to land a 20 pounder on a 24 - for what it’s worth …

      I was hoping to fish some of Quebec’s salmon rivers this spring. If there is no added weight allowed, can you tie on double hooks?

    The only fly i would use of those is the Sunray. Not impressed by any of the others where i fish here in Norway. More natural colours outfish anything ellse here on a general basis. And no not impressed by Norlings special fly for norwegian early salmon. it catches salmon but several others catch much more.

    • @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing
      @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would agree, this is definitely geared toward UK and Iceland. Perhaps we should do a specific one for each country. For Norway what are you mr favourites? Mine have always been Sunray shadows and templehund in several different colours... although I am old school and like the brown and Orange original from my guiding days there on Aa elva...
