As a Sicilian-American who grew up with very little connection to my heritage, I learned to identify with the Sicilians I saw in Cosa Nostra movies. My love of Cosa Nostra movies reflects my love of family, friendship, and tradition and my distrust of finding meaning in larger, impersonal realities such as patriotism or political ideology. Many characters in Cosa Nostra movies also exemplify a type of manhood missing in modern society- men who value loyalty under pressure, who are bold, who pursue power and the responsibilities that come with it, men who don't fear punishment or death.
I am not attempting to use the photos to retell or illustrate the story. Instead, I've selected the images for their beauty and the emotions they arouse in me. I've altered each image in terms of color, light/dark contrast, light intensity, temperature, and texture for the sake of aesthetic and emotional effect. Having seen both films dozens of times, I have a lot of feelings attached to the images and characters.
