The tape is usually based on the kind of ink you're using. If you're using water based ink that is very light in density then you have to use a thick tape like brown tape so that ink will not easily spill under the tape. But if you're using a thick ink like plastisol then your tape must not be very thick, cello tape suffices since it will not easily spill under the tape. The rule is, the lighter the ink, the thicker the tape.
