I still remember the food we had in scouts after climbing a boggy mountain, all day, in the rain & cutting wind.
It was a scooped-out potato with an egg cracked into it (the top of the spud was stuck back on with cocktail sticks), wrapped in foil and thrown into a campfire.
At the time of eating - Michelin 5 stars 😁

    Hey Saffy,
I’m ex-military and also a lazy camper. I take military rations for breakfast but often opt to grab a “meal deal” for lunch. Sometimes I’ll take have military rations for an evening meal. My off road trip to the Algarve and back was done like this.
    BTW, it’s “mess tin”

Hi Saffy, ex military here too. The meals are designed to give massive calories and also stop you needing the toilet. it would be a good idea to eat fruit at night to get things moving again if you know what I mean. stay safe out there. We all love you and wish you the very best.

And it's like, I was in the highlands, tones of water around me but I'm too scared to drink the water because of bacteria, so I bought a life straw for £20 so I could stop spending £4 a day on water

guess the new bagged ration packs are different as the older ration box was 4000 or 4500 calories. 1500 is a MacD's big mac meal. Also happy someone finally showed that the water you boil the retort packs in is supposed to be used for a hot tea/coffee/hot chocolate, seen so many throw it away and boil another potful...thank you.

There should be a device like a harness so that you can strap it to your chest so that you can have a flask with a flexible pipe/straw which would go up into your helmet,( like motor racing drivers), that you can use for making energy drinks, protein shakes etc that you can suck on when riding or parked up.

We need a compendium of 1 pot recipes for camping. My standyby is to part boil some pasta and then strain it and throw in a tin of something like curry or stew or even tuna and cheese.
I like those instant cappuccino coffees for a hot drink without needing to carry milk or coffee mate.
Or a bag of loose salad and a roll with a bit of BBQ fish or other meat.
Mornings are for bacon... its a rule or charter or something.... most campsites smell of bacon in the morning.
in a pinch a pot rice/noodle/mash is ok if you like them. if your boiling water for a drink.
Or soup if you buy a pack of 4 or 6 rolls you might have one left over after bacon etc and the evening before.
I always have some crisp apples or robust fruit in a pannier or tank bag.
You can often get sample sizes of toiletries toothpaste etc. They are a great space saver. And you can decant washing up water into small bottles the take with you.

I've had my share of military rations, and they are mostly quite good, but when I - as a civilian - try to buy them, then they cost a fortune. I have tried emergency rations for pilots and they are top notch! Weighs close to nothing and a few tiny nibbles will take you through several hours of hard work. You will have to bribe someone, or enlist to get hold of them...
When I'm out shooting (with a camera that is) I tend to roast carrots, onions and chick peas, and mix in a few bits of spicy sausages. That stores up nicely in a container, and it costs close to nothing in comparison to eating out. A couple of 100-200 grams of dark chocolate on the side makes sure I'm a happy camper!
And I never ever forget to bring good coffee with me in a thermos!
If push comes to shove: A truck stop like The Greasy Cloth (or whatever they are called) is a sure way to get loads of kcal's for a minimum of money. If you need sugar and fat, they have you covered!

In place of the military rations, you can grab trail meals that are either self-contained or you can get the jet boil products. Dehydrated fruit and vegetables. I prefer the trail meals because you can get them in a wider variety if you have special meal requirements. Usually, you don't get the extra stuff you don't honestly need. You can get separate breakfast, snacks, and dinner so if you want to skip a meal it's easy to do. If you need to share, that's easy to do as well. You can get multi-person meals if you want those. I like the flexibility.

As ex Mil I suggest putting the chocolate cake in with the hot chocolate, also get a metal cup for your coffee rather than drink from a mess tin.

Hi Saffy, Military rations are a smart move indeed when it comes to budget but also volume and packaging.
Nonetheless, your stomach and taste shall be preserved as much as possible ^^...I'd suggest you give the French military rations a try, you'll thank me later ;)
    Stay safe.

multi pack x24 noodles, then buy some ingrediants such as precooked ham or chicken, throw it in, instant gravy with some bread, biscuits and fruit lol some mornings I will go all out though and have a fried egg in some bread or fry up a steak for dinner. My two week trip around the UK will be interesting, as I am a penny pincher and hate to spend money if I don't have to. Camping the entire way to keep costs down.

Thank you again for a brilliant video. It gave me a great idea to get some when I start moto camping myself. But I have to ask where do you get the military pack from ?. As you said you get them cheap because they are out of date so wondering if you got them from a certain website or something.

The date on the outside of the pack is when it was packed you can also get vegetarian,Sikh and Hindu, halal and kosher varieties should you feel adventurous. They are better than the old camping dehydrated meals you used to get but for me they are taking roughing it a bit far.

I have recently been diagnosed with Coeliac's Disease, so, no Gluten, so I thought, cool, they do Gluten Free ration packs. Then I saw the price.
    $60 per packet. WT?
Yeah, nah. It's rice and freeze dried vegies for me!
If you don't have a serious medical food issues, Ration Packs are a great way to go. Unlike the Gluten free ones, they can be quiet cheap, and I do remember them tasting not halve bad, many years ago.

I laughed when you opened up the ration bag. If you were lactose intolerant and had a nut allergy you'd be a bit knackered.😊
You're right when it comes to liability in relation to food best before date (BBE), but another key reason is the fact that you can't be sure how the food is going to be stored. Is it going to spend two years in Iraq or two years in the Falklands????

  • @marcheighton6436
    @marcheighton6436 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sorry I would rather spend a little more and have something half palettable if it's only a tub of noodles or packet meal from the supermarket stock up before you go or something tinned from a local shop potatoes peas stewing steak etc I'm a guy so if I can do it. Of course you can stop at a cafe or resterant and have a proper meal once a day touring on a bike does not mean roughing it. Just my opinion sorry.
    All the best
