- Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin speaks prior to the release of a video of two Tulsa Police Officers being shot during a news conference Monday, Sept. 14, 2020. The video shows the shooting of Tulsa Police Sgt. Craig Johnson and Tulsa Police Officer Aurash Zarkeshan. Johnson later died from his injuries.

This is so sad.
First, I would like to commend Chief Franklin for the amazing job he is doing since his first day as Chief. If you're not from here then you have no idea how much he cares about the citizens, the officers, justice, and fairness. Every city should be as blessed as we are and deserves the level of respect and support that he gives to ALL of the people, civilian or law enforcement on a daily basis. Second, for everyone giving their opinion on what "would have happened" if Ware were a black man... Check the stats, TPD has an impeccable record when it comes to racial bias, use of force and excessive force. That's why our community stands so firmly behind our officers and get so emotional when tragedies like this occur and why these tragedies are so rare. Lastly, I wanna say Thank you to our brave officers and prayers for your emotional healing. I wish ppl could understand that everytime an officer is pulling up on a traffic stop, walking up to a scene, responding to a call, etc. they are aware that this moment has the potential to be deadly for them. They aren't walking up thinking oh he's white I'm safe or oh he's black he's gonna attack me. They could DIE regardless of the race, they could have a safe stop regardless of the race. It's the character of the person being detained that decides whether they will comply with instructions not the color of their skin. Evil is evil, good is good, it knows no color or gender or age.
RIP Sgt. Johnson, thank you for your sacrifice. Get Well Officer Zarkeshan and know your community is here to welcome you home and thank you for your sacrifice as well. Justice will be served and our community will be safer. And PLEASE everyone #BACKTHEBLUE they need our support just as much as we need theirs.
I'm from Tulsa as well and you explained that so gracefully and I really appreciate that! I've read alot of feed back from people on this case and it's always so ugly and it's disturbing we live in a world like that. Thank you for this!

I, unfortunately, saw the bodycam video on some channel yesterday, it is heartbreaking, and the THUG they were trying to apprehend was totally ignoring all commands given by officers. Seeing it play out until the end is something I won't ever unsee. This didn't need to happen. Police are not being able to do the jobs they need to do because of these protestors and because of the media. This officer did NOT need to die like this. Let the cops do the jobs they were trained to do! This is bullshit! RIP to this brave officer who died while protecting his community.

My deepest condolences to the families of the officer who was mortally wounded. I have thought that using police K9 dogs to immediately go after resistant suspects rather than an officer might provide an intervention that stops the suspect who will likely cry out to the officers to help. Getting near these emboldened criminals is like going into a mine field right now. Is there a smoke bomb or some such thing that can be immediately thrown inside a vehicle when someone isn't coming out as directed. I feel that a whole different strategy has to be implemented rather than trying to apprehend a resistant suspect.
There's not always a k9 unit available. And that tactic is used very often. But that's only because a k9 officer was nearby. It's not a new idea. And the smoke bomb thing would end up disastrous. They throw one in the wrong car and you could burn someone alive and cause a car fire which endangers more people
Somehow I don’t think allowing a dog to tear someone’s face off is an appropriate response to refusal to comply.
The chief really doesn't want this video out. Good thing the judge has a pair. People need to see it. How fast someone is gone forever. Watching deadly car crashes is good motivation to drive safe. The press even gets special access to film up close. They often show serious injuries or death.. Thats been protected so im not sure why the chief had such an issue.

It's very disturbing and disheartening to scroll through the comments and see so many referring to how horrible these officers are and how they deserved to die. I watched the actually video and was very angered by the actions of this individual. He was treated respectfully until he began to refuse lawful orders.
I'm a corrections officer and in the video from the action and speech of the language of the man that was stopped he seemed to he intoxicated. I don't know if it was due to drugs or alcohol but the individual seemed intoxicated.
I know very good and decent police officers,and I'm very sickened to see that as society we've come to the point to where we celebrate the death of our first responders.
And to all those comments about the police being bad or race there is bad and racist people in every profession. Doctors, lawyers,firefighters, EMT's, corrections, politicians,teachers, and so on and so forth. So please stop creating a false narrative because it's causing people their lives.
These officer, in fact every police officer, leaves their house and their family everyday to serve and protect their communities. Now I'm not saying there is not room for improvement because there is, but this is not the way to reach that improvement.

@chris andersonWell Mr. Anderson in the video the taser deployed as ineffective,but a lot are. However, officers whether on the streets or in the jail/prisons have to notify before deploying any use of force. Its because we have use on the streets it is a water base so it is not as potent as the gel one that we use in the jail which mean most people are able to fight through it. Also we as corrections/police officers are trained not to spray people directly in the eyes because it can cause damage. Now I will agree that the officers should have just thrown this individual to the ground and handled business, but in todays climate we've made it so hard for police to do their jobs.

Furthermore, when individual fail to comply officers are well within their training and right to move up the latldder of use of force. If the riles would have been reversed and the individual would have died one it would have been lawful, and two no one would have cared because the suspect was white. I need to understand why the first deployment was ineffective on an immobile, sitting subject. That’s the real question. They did all that threatening. Spent all that time. Stood right next to their subject and we should accept that “the first deployment was ineffective”. There lies a HUGE problem. Tasers can be a great alternative to deadly force…..when they freaking work. So either the taser operator or the taser itself are faulty. If that first deployment was effective AND they hadn’t waited for dude’s accomplice to grab a cheeseburger and use the bathroom before showing up to help his homeboy out, this could have been avoided. These officers were TOO patient. There needs to be a limit to how many warnings an officer can give before stepping up the force. Even a 2 yr old knows after 10 threats it’s really not a threat. It was almost comical how many times they issued empty threats… until it wasn’t.

I literally just watched a video with officers laughing and reenacting a choke hold that killed a young man in Colorado. Until officers like that and the ones that kill unarmed citizens are kicked off the force and severally punished things will only get worse. If good officers never call out bad ones are they really good? I watch this actual video. This piece of garbage was treated differently than other people and we all know who those other people are. Hate to say it but if he was treated like a black person they would still be here. Police have committed decades of murders, people being set up, beat to near death. This is your so called modern society. Cameras just show what has been going on. It was terrible seeing this happen to these officers I respect good officers that deserve to wear badge. I saw the video of this murder. It was pretty ugly, but this police Chief is right. The police officers gave the driver more than the benefit of the doubt to exit the vehicle. The cop gave him chance after chance, but he stubbornly resisted. The suspect reached for a hidden gun, then cowardly murdered that one cop.
What kind of society do we have.

The only crime was the officers trying to illegally tow the car before the tag was 90 days out of date. Watch both videos, the rookie cop lies, claims the suspect pulled out in front of him after blowing through a red light. No traffic light where the guy pulled out and he pulled into the right late which most of us do all the time. The cop never hit the brakes like he claimed in the other video.
The other video shows that the cops lied in the probable cause affidavit, the suspect did NOT stand calmly over Office Johnson and pump three bullets into him. The suspect was blinded after multiple sprays of pepper spray into his face, he was firing blindly. Johnson kicked the suspect in the groin or stomach twice, while the rookie was trying to pull the suspect out of the car. And all of this illegal behavior happened because the two cops decided they wanted justification for searching the car by illegally seizing the car without lawful justification under Oklahoma law.
As for this chief of police, of course he doesn't want to discuss the entire videos. Watching a supervisor kick a suspect in the nuts twice is pretty hard to explain. Seeing the cops be proven liars over the probable cause affidavit is hard to explain.

I would imagine it would be kind of hard to recount the details of a situation after having gotten shot several times, so some inconsistencies like that are bound to happen, but that's why the video evidence exists. Now I'm not familiar with the laws in Oklahoma, but if you're being told to get out of the car because they're going to tow it for expired tags, you should do it.
There's absolutely no reason or justification to sit there and act like a whiny child towards the officers and then decide you're going to shoot them because you think they're violating your rights. If anything, he was likely just going to get a ticket and could have had his buddy come and pick him up and then fought it in court, but no, he had to fight with them because he was an idiot.
However, this guy apparently has a track record as well. If I'm not mistaken, he was a felon in possession of a firearm and he knew they were likely going to search him because they had probable cause to. That's when he fought with them and shot the officers because he didn't want to go back to jail. Now he's going to get life in prison.
Also, it didn't matter that he had been pepper sprayed or kicked in the groin, in the video it clearly shows that he was still able to aim his weapon and fire towards both officers with intent to kill, and even fired at the sergeant who was laying on the ground after he had fallen down, seemingly aiming for the head. So it's not outside of reason to say that his intent was to execute the sergeant, which unfortunately he did.
If you ask me though, a life sentence for him is getting off light. Regardless, if the officers did break the law, in no means does it justify the actions of the suspect.

Desrycon contempt of a cop is not a punishable crime, however, escalation of a police encounter on the basis of it is not. So their escalation of it to a search/tow is a violation of his rights given cops are not supposed to show contempt and or harass those who they feel deserves it. It is not a violation of his rights to tow a car without updated tags, or a car where the only person in the car has no licence or proof of insurance. If they were just going to let you drive off from that, why would anyone get them? There's no consequence for not having them except a ticket if you get caught. Of course, they're going to tow and I think it's normal procedure to search before towing so the person can't come back and say something was planted during the tow.

They didn't notice the victim retrieve his firearm while they were beating him up over something very minor. The Tulsa Police Department has my deepest condolences and prayers. Those Officers were protecting and serving their community and one of the Officers made the ultimate sacrifice. Sadly, too many people hate the police and blatantly boast their pleasure with officers being hurt or killed. Our country is rapidly decaying and it must stop. We need to support our Law Enforcement Officers and appreciate the job they do for our safety, so we can live a peaceful life. God Bless those officer's and their families. This murder was so horrid and brutal, and needless to say not deserved in the slightest. This killer is indefensible.
But another thing that is troubling is the amount of chances and opportunities these officers gave him. We've seen many people, mostly Black, killed by police without being given anywhere near the number of chances Ware was, and some shot, and killed, even when they were complying. If these officers had treated him like the threat he was, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to kill them.

It makes you question what could the criminal have done to destroy the video evidence. Put bother bodies inside the patrol car and then set it alight in the hope that everything would be destroyed or do the videos live stream to a back up server elsewhere.

But why wasn't he shot after not complying with orders to exit the vehicle 60 times and resisting? The officer stated the driver also had a history of some sort relating to drugs. When it's one of us and we do not comply and have any type of criminal history, most say its justified when we are shot and killed and there is no such thing as systemic racism or white privilege. Even so i feel for the officers and their families. At the end of the day, we all matter, all of us.

Mr. Ware was allowed to call 📞 his friend who eventually picked him up. Now during the Terence Crutcher shooting he definitely wasn’t given that many opportunities. So now it confirms that there are different tactics when dealing with citizens from different culture backgrounds. RIP to the innocent law enforcement officer that lost his life.
