Funny story. The look of shock on Alan Rickman’s face when he starts falling is totally genuine. The director had him set up on like a 20’ drop to an airbag. He setup the shot and said he’d drop him on the count of three. But he dropped him on one. Cheeky bastard. 😅
Bruce Willis was a *comedy* star. He had a successful comedic series on TV for four seasons. ("Moonlighting" 1985-89) He made a couple comedic movies that were moderate hits, and the idea of putting him in a lead role in an action movie was a hard sell in 1988. (Imagine if Jimmy Carr were announced as the next James Bond.) Everyone was skeptical, including audiences; It didn't really pack theaters opening weekend but strong word-of-mouth made it a surprise hit and completely changed the trajectory of Bruce's career.
I loved "moonlighting".. miss that show.

The one difference is that Willis never did the physical transformation, his comedic characters were typically handsome, if not very bright men, and although he wasn't built like an action figure, he was in decent shape "for a normal guy." So then as an action hero he was the relatable, balding "normal guy" that could still take on bad guys without six-pack abs.
My favorite thing about this movie is Bruce Willis' character isn't bullet proof, he gets hurt and pretty badly. He even begins to lose hope he will survive, completely different from so many other action films. Makes it that much more realistic.
Side note: the crazy bad guy with the longer blonde hair was a famous Russian ballet dancer who defected to the USA in 1979. His name was Alexander Godunov and he was in a few good movies before his untimely death at the age of 45. One of the other movies is “Witness” with Harrison Ford.

Another film he was in was the sadly underrated “The Money Pit” with Tom Hanks. Bit of a slapstick comedy, but some real good laughs. He’s an obnoxious orchestra director trying to put the moves on Hanks’ wife.

C.B. stands for citizens band (radio) allows driver's to talk with each other over open radio band. Truckers use it a lot. Used to popular with civilians years ago
My dad and all of his buddies had CB radios. There is an entire language that goes along with CBs. For instance a state cop (trooper) is called a Smoky, because many of them wear hats that look like the one Smoky the Bear wears. Phrases like "pedal to the metal" were also used. Drivers would identify themselves with their call letters, usually 3 letters, 3 numbers, and then a "handle" or nickname. My dad was in the banking industry, handling installment loans . His handle was "Easy Money". Mostly it is a way for truckers to communicate with others on the road. They would tell each other where there was a speed trap, or an accident or traffic backup. Just a way to stay informed before cell phones, google maps and the internet.

My dad was a trucker for 32 years…his CB handle was “Junkman”….
I actually think you DO need good acting in a movie like this, particularly from the protagonist. Unlike many 80's action films, the lead character here is fallible...just a regular "everyman" in irregular circumstances. Willis added humor, depth, and relate-ability.
This era did get away with casting a number of occaisionally pathetic non-actors in the lead role and surrounding them with a stellar, experienced cast. Steven Seagal's entire career rode on the backs of the side characters and villain performances.
With bad actors, I think it could have come off as campy.
Ah! You’ve discovered my favorite Christmas movie!!
Actually even before Die Hard, Willis became famous in the 1980’s TV series Moonlighting, also starring the former model Cybill Shepherd. The two of them reportedly hated each other, but their onscreen chemistry apparently made for some good TV, because the show has been listed as one of the best TV series of all time. (You may be able to judge for yourself-in the process of googling for some details on this I noticed that the show is going to be streaming (sounds like the details are still being worked out).
Willis is notoriously difficult to work with-his feud with Cybill Shepherd is still going after all these years, and he’s had run-ins with many others along the way, including Sylvester Stallone, who worked with him in the Expendables. Not sure what the issue is, but normally a difficult actor gets shelved because so many talented actors are just dying for a chance. Willis’ career has continued precisely because of his onscreen charisma. I know I watch his movies when I find them.
And yes, the rest of the Die Hard movies are also worth watching. This is the best but the rest, esp. the one with Samuel L. Jackson (another favorite), are also really good.
I still miss Alan Rickman.

His onscreen charisma is amazing! I just love the way he looks when he does that little thing with his mouth (lips pursed & a crooked smirk). It’s to die for😍
@@kimleemoon He doesn’t do it for me that way. There is definitely something about him that makes him really watchable, though, and my favorite kind of movie is action with a sense of humor. I also really love the Marvel universe (Avengers, etc.) for that reason.

John Mclain's character can be summed up best with this one word: Stubborn.
Dude will never allow overwhelming odds to stop him from fighting bad guys.
This is the perfect action film, it caught everyone off guard when it came out. Alan Rickman was unknown in the states and his performance as Hans Gruber became instantly iconic.
Actually it was heavily marketed on tv and it got a lot of focus on the big ass explosions.
Die Hard 2 & 3 (With a Vengeance) are definitely worth watching. I liked the 4th one too (Live Free or Die Hard), but forget about the 5th. Part of the appeal of John McClane is that he's just a regular guy who gets into these situations, and he's obviously scared and doesn't always know what he's doing. Not like the usual action heroes who are all confident.
The appeal of 5 is the coming together with his son. Some great one liners, good action scenes with the helicopters. It was a good way to close it out. But yes the weakest movie, but 1-4 set the bar pretty high. My favorite is which ever one I'm watching!

Reginald Velljohnson(Al Powell) also has a memorable supporting role in "Crocodile Dundee." I saw him most recently playing a version of himself in "The Most Excellent Mr. Dundee," reunited with Paul Hogan.
Don't forget he was also Carl Winslow - a police officer - in Family Matters
This was was a great pick! Did you know this was Alan Rickman's first movie roll? Prior to this he had built up a good career as classiclly trained stage performer. Iconic! If you want another classic action film you should check out Lethal Weapon. You won't be disappointed!
And, no, Bruce is NOT in it😂
I work for a grocery store and we are only closed one day out of the year, Christmas Day. We are open until 7pm on Christmas Eve and it’s normal for our last customer to exit the building around 7:30pm. We then have to do closing duties which means we leave around 9:00pm. I don’t think those hours are uncommon in the US for people working in the service industry.

This movie not only started Bruce Willis' career as an action star, he was previously a comedic actor, but it also introduced the whole world to the amazingly brilliant talent that was Alan Rickman. It also changed the landscape for action movies as we know it. It introduced us to the well dressed well educated criminal. There weren't many back then in the 80's and didn't make much of an impact until Alan Rickman's Hans.
TV show Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd put them in the spotlight.
It put them in the moonlight.
31:38 - He wasn't shot. Hans told the other guy to shoot the glass because he knew John was barefoot. So, to avoid dying, John had to run across the broken glass.
One big mistake in this movie is when the bad guys called off the fire alarm, the Fire Dept. turned around and left. If an alarm is sent to the FD, then they follow through and check it out, even if it is a false alarm. I worked in a high school and at some point during final exams, some dimwit kid always pulled the fire alarm to disrupt classes. We all had to clear the building and wait for the FD to arrive and check it out and reset the alarms. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Sometimes more than once a day.
The problem John had from the beginning is he knew that anything he said on the radio would be heard by the bad guys.
BTW, when Allen Rickman was thrown off the building , the look on his face was somewhat real as he was told the he would be be (safely) released on the count of three. However, unknown to him, it was planned to actually happen at the count of one. So his look of shock was somewhat real and that is what the director wanted. Of course in the movie, it is played in slow motion which just amplifies this.
Bruce Willis was already "on the map," in terms of being well known. He was in a successful TV series called "Moonlighting" with Cybill Shepherd. This was his first major film role.

"CB" stands for "Citizen's Band" radio. It's a radio setup that allows you to broadcast anything to anyone, with about 50 channels or so. Was very popular with truckers back in the day. But that's why you see John announce "channel 9."
Cellular phones did exist in 1988 when this movie came out, but they were bulky and usually only installed in higher-end cars. Which is why we see Argyle as the only person able to talk on his phone after the physical lines are cut.

CB means Citizen's Band radio. If you had one in your car, you could talk to other people who had one in their car or truck as well. Long haul truckers had them, and in 1973 or so, they became popular for people who drove ordinary cars. CB radios were a craze for a while.
CB is Citizens Band Radio. In the US it was used by truckers and others and just about anyone could have one, usually in a vehicle. My family used to have one and when we travelled on the interstate we could listen to the truckers to get an idea about traffic ahead. Sometimes you could even ask about traffic on a stretch of road and they might let you know.
The bearer bonds Hans was after were a type that was supposed to be untraceble, like cash, but I've always wondered just how true that was. Sounds more like a movie trope than reality.
CB stands for Citizens Band which was a very popular form of radio communications in the '70s firstly between truckers driving semis communicating about road weather safety and where speed traps were located, but it later Aldo got really popular with regular drivers. There's a great film about this fad directed by the director of Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Femme which two of my good friends gave leading roles in. It's total Americsna eccentricity but full of warmth sz well.
The funny thing about this great movie that it has become an annual “Christmas” movie even though it’s a little dark and violent.
I love traditional Christmas movies, but my absolute favourite “must see” ones are Die Hard and The Ref.
My favorite bit of trivia is that the look on Rickman’s face as he’s falling is genuine surprise, not acting.
He was told he would be let go at the count of three but obviously Bruce Willis was told to let him go sooner. A surprise look on his face is not acting

This is a movie my husband has to watch every christmas time. It is a great movie.
He was somewhat famous before this but this movie set him to the top. the whole series get more action then the one before.

William Atherton who played Thornburg the jerk reporter also played Walter Peck the fool from the EPA in Ghostbusters. This is a Christmas movie.
HE was famous as a Comedian Actor - this movie put his Serious Acting ability on spot light and the world fell in love with him the way he could keep the comedy and do the drama at the same time.

When Rickman falls the look of surprise on his face was real.They rigged him to drop about 6 or 7 meters to a pad so they could film the green screen shot. The director told him the props men would drop him 10 seconds after a certain signal….and then the director told them to drop him right on the signal. Rickman thought the rigging had failed and he was actually falling.
We watch this on Christmas Eve after It's A Wonderful Life.

1. Karl/Alexander Godunov(RIP) also played in "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and "Witness" with non Indiana/Solo Harrison Ford. He had a very interesting story.
2. Robinson/Paul Gleason(RIP) seems to always play buttheads. I.e. "Trading Places" and "The Breakfast Club".

Gotta say that after this movie I tried to watch any movie that starred Alan Rickman. He brought such personality to any role he starred in.
Did you see Galaxy Quest and Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy? Two of my favorites with him, because they're comedies, and his humor in them is UNMATCHED.

CB= CB radio mainly used in Semi trucks now and some State highway patrol units have them for trouble and emergencies on the highway. Truck drivers use them for talking to others and their a good way of communicating wrecks, where police are hiding, traffic back ups etc. But they used to be popular enough for everyday citizens to use before cell phones took over. They're good for walkie talkie use if you get a handheld instead of a mounted mobile.
Maybe the quintessential 80s American action film. The Terminator was really as much a sci fi film as it was action, so it's probably not a fair comparison. It has all the standard 80s action cliches like the one liners and explosions and goofy villains, but for their time, they're done really well, and rather than the usual jacked up guy as the action hero like Arnold, Sly or Dolph Lundgren, it's more of the everyman, smart-ass, rough around the edges, movie cop type. One thing you can say about a lot of these 80s movies: They knew their audience. They didn't try to make objectively great films that would age well. They wanted to make movies for the early MTV generation and while I can see them as being the start of movies going in a direction that became so ADHD by 2022 that it's ridiculous, in 1988, it wasn't so bad. We're still not at Bourne levels for bad, painful editing and there's still that desire to please an audience with spectacle. There's nothing pretentious about this kind of movie. It knows it's not Shakespeare and it isn't trying to be. It just wants to entertain in the most over the top way possible and does it without being too stupid in the process, like a lot of 80s action films that really don't age well. I also appreciate an action movie that is shot for real. No CGI. CGI really doesn't come into prominence until Terminator 2 in 1991. Having watched enough Marvel movies, I really appreciate a movie that doesn't get lazy with its special effects.

A CB radio is a close in radio commonly used to talk between truckers, and way back when, to be like Burt Reynolds, people put them in their cars to talk to other motorists and use silly tag names.
The "security guard" for the bad guys is Huey Lewis, of Huey Lewis and the News.. great band with a lot of super popular music in the 80's. He was in Back to the Future as well ❤

This movie is ICONIC and would not have become the classic it is if not for Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman. The “ cat and mouse” game between them is amazing and the action is spectacular. One of the best movies ever and it catapulted Bruce’s career from TV to movie star.
It's not a cult classic. It's simply a classic.

Most of us older people who were watching this before the internet was a thing often don't go to those rating sites to rate movies we've been watching for decades or the rating would probably be higher
When Bruce fell down the shaft, that was a real accident and looked so good they kept it in the movie, the stuntman was unhurt.
There is meant to be humor in this movie all while being suspenseful....GOOD MOVIE

The second movie is a must, it's a great, entertaining plot twisting story. And it keeps the same type of humor. Love your channel man, keep it up and I for one will be there with you!
You ought to react to "Apocalypse Now." To me, it is easily one of the greatest movies ever made. Francis Ford Coppola nearly lost his mind and his shirt making it. The scenes were so intense, the then young Martin Sheen had a heart attack during filming. He also had a drunken nervous breakdown, which they filmed and used in the movie. The cinematography is like a dream, and at times, a nightmare. Marlon Brando had a short but memorable part as the mad military leader. Very, very intense.
I got choked up when McClane and Pal see each other and hug at the end of the movie more than McClaine and his wife hug after Gruber falls to his death.
I never get tired of this flick...

There is a Bill Clay. It shows Wm. Clay, William (Bill Clay), also in a deleted scenes, it is revealed that all the crew are wearing Tag Heuer watches, and he notices "Bill Clay" has a Tag Heuer watch and that's why he gives him the empty gun.
And now you see why its a Christmas classic.
Love, love love Bruce Willis every since he starred in the tv show “Moonlighting” with Cyril Shepherd. I fell in love with him watching that show. He’s a great actor and I’ve seen most of his movies. But his latest movies & the 5th element aren’t my cup of tea.

"CB" was "Citizens Band" radio, most commonly used by long-haul truck/lorry drivers and weirdly popular in general from the 70s to mid 80s.

Funny story about the drop at the end. The stunt coordinator told Rickman that they would count “1…2…3…” BEFORE dropping him on the wire rig. 🤣They dropped him on “1” to get a real reaction from him. That fear on his face is Rickman actually freaking out.😂😂😂
A Christmas movie in October! This movie is awesome. One of my favorite action movies. I recommend watching A Nightmare Before Christmas in December

Argyle's car phone was what would have been available but like you said, they were EXPENSIVE and few people had them and the price per minute was ridiculous. People weren't having nonsense conversations on them.
The greatest Christmas movie of all time!...Christmas elements all through the movie!
Die Hard was a game changer for the action movie genre. Up till this point, the heroes were all muscle bound serious guys like sadly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adolph Lundgren, etc, and the babies were all dumb, sleepy/slimy guys. Then along comes Die Hard, where the villain is a smooth, charming and well educated man in a suit that no one would look twice at, and the hero is an every day guy with ordinary muscle, funny one-liners and he ability to get injured and be scared. It was something audiences had rarely if ever seen before and it was the reason for the now common everyday hero man.
I enjoyed your reaction to one of my favorite Christmas movies. There are quite a few sequels, but only I, II, and III are really worth the time.

Many comments suggesting Smokey and the Bandit. With your focus on American culture, you might like it. It is very dated (plot is based on the use of CB radio to help a trucker speed on the highway) but it delivers a full-on lesson about American 70's machismo...emphasis on the cheese. Hot cars, hot side chick, and macho mustachioed star Burt Reynolds, a former football player turned Hollywood star, turned it into a franchise--sort of the grandfather of Fast and the Furious.
Family Matters (with Urkel) is a spin-off of Die Hard!
