Took my 1984 Planar3 to Philip 2.1/2 hour round trip as it was having speed issues. He fixed it no problem and carried out a service for an unbelievable low price IMO. What Philip doesn't know about Rega and their clones is not worth knowing. Very knowledgeable as you probably know and a really nice guy with it. I have no hesitation in recommending him and his shop. Thanks again Philip your a star. If I need any of my hifi for a repair or service I know where it will be going.
Fantastic video. Thank you. You have explained perfectly the reason for my Rega slowing and then playing backwards after 15 -20 minutes. If only more help videos were this informative. Superb! Thank you again.
Hi. Having put off the inevitable due to apprehension I just swapped out my capacitor following your fantastic video. Here's hoping that I can now play at least 4 albums in succession at a consistent speed. Many thanks for your help 👍
So informative I have just purchased a rega p6 from a 3 absolutely night and day difference although I loved the 3 and felt a bit sad to see it go beeing my first tt many thanks for you videos your a genius 👍 and have the knowledge in a level so rarely seen these days Robbo.
Thanks for this video my deck has this very problem so now I'm confident in what I am looking for and how cheap it is to repair. I really enjoy your videos many thanks.
Really helpful. Thanks very much. I easily replaced the capacitor bough from ebay "Rega Planar Motor Repair Capacitor For Earlier 220V 240V Models 0.22uF 220nF"
Great video ! I nearly purchased a new Rega P1 the other night for £300 but after watching your video I opened up my late fathers P3 & low & behold the resistor is shot. I’m struggling with picking the correct replacement though, would like to get a Rifa to keep it as close to original as possible, had a look on rs but not 100% what one I’m looking for ?
Managed to track down the right capacitor from France £10 which is overpriced I know but speed issue fixed so I one happy camper ! Thank you so much for your video you’ve not only saved me hundreds of pounds but breathed life back into my late fathers turntable !
Excellent tutorial - only improvement I would suggest is a little advice on the soldering part as it's a bit fiddly. Repaired my 38 year old Planar which now runs true (measured by eye/stopwatch = 59.61 seconds for 33 ⅓ speed both cold and warm). Thank you so much.
Hi, not clear exactly what capacitor I need for my very early P3 with RB 200 arm. Could you post a link to the correct product? Thanks - very useful Vids!!!
Thanks for the video. I've been having some issues with my Rega Planar 3 over time , slow starting (easily fixed by nudging the platter to get it going) , however is making that knocking noise sometimes on start. it's pretty old (1986) , I recently replaced the Suspension belt , however problem still persists. Capacitor looks good, but is old. So will look to replace it or just go for the 24v upgrade.
Thanks for this video. Question. My rega plays one side of some records well but stops on the other side. Only for some records. Can it be the capacitor? Its a rega RP1
Hi. Thanks for your videos they're very useful. In one of your videos you're fixing a fault in a dead Rega planar. You check to see if the pulley is vibrating. It isn't but mine is! My wife was playing it a while back and it slowed down and then stopped. When I took the platter and belt off and turned it on the pulley would spin bit then stop and just vibrate. I replaced the capacitor as was suggested by a few people. When. I turned it on again without platter and belt it started to turn. I put the belt on it slowed down, stopped and then vibrated. Do you know what could be causing this please? I was going to buy a new motor but I noted in your video you said they rarely break. I wondered if it was something to do with the motor shaft connection to the pulley but not sure how I'd test this. Any thoughts gratefully received, I'm fairly skint but would love to get.my record player working again for Christmas! Thanks. Ben
Hi. Like the video series thankyou. In NZ we have 230v and I’ve a p3 that I’ve changed both cap and resistor on but still have and issue of not starting or starting backwards and motor jumping and vibrating? Tried several variations on values for both and still it runs slow? Oiled the spindle and changed the belt but no dice? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Question? I have a Planar 2 that has an odd humming noise. I snipped off the cheap RCA cable some years ago and eventually rewired the tonearm and ran a separate ground wire to a new ground post. Everything has been nice and quiet except a few months ago it started this humming noise. Changed carts and preamps with no change. Thought it was the wiring and just rewired it again with no change. Now it pops when turning on and off the motor. Is it possible a capacitor on the motor circuit board is bad? I've seen the upgrade motor kit, but for $250 I'd rather make this my last choice. I did a RPM check from a phone app and it's running 33.88 RPM +1.62%. I'm still using the original wall wart power supply. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
It would be very useful if you listed the actual component in the description. I have an RP3 running slow, and have used your other video to check possible solutions. After having some fun getting the pully back in (lol) I'm left wondering if I need to do some surgery, but if I had the component I might consider just changing them out regardless.
I have replaced a few capacitors on Rega decks, but have come across something which is new to me. I'm doing the same procedure on a Moth Alamo (Planar 2 clone) which runs slow after about half an hour. I've found a resistor fitted across the capacitor. Any ideas?
@@cheshireaudio Got you. Shame your otherwise excellent "install 24V" video didn't include the removal of the old motor - although I assume it's not too difficult.
Just a note on the old REGA. The mains wiring goes to the PCB, and only then to the on-off switch. The small PCB always has Live and Neutral present and un-protected when the unit is plugged in. Please be careful when removing the cover that the plug is not still in the wall socket, the Rega switch doesn't isolate the unit. Whoever came up with the PCB should be shot. It should wire to a fuse, then the switch, then to the Motor PCB.
I have a 30 year old Rega Planar 2 with the same speed problem. In my Rega, there are 2 green capacitors 0.22uf 400volt. I have tried to replace both capacitors twice with new film capacitors with same values (they are smaller and not green), but the problem now is not dwindling speed. It is rather too slow speed....I am lost. Any ideas? Thanks!
The later green caps don’t seem to fail. Have you checked the motor pulley is attached properly and that the ball bearing is still in the main bearing (sub platter bearing)
Thanks. I resoldered the original green caps in the circuit. The belt is also new. It turns out the pulley is loose. Very strange that it reduced speed after approximately 15 mins with a loose pulley? Maybe it slips more as it gets warmer?

Aaw thanks :-)
Thank you Philip, credit where credit is due.
Guy in the shop told me it was a write-off, £300+ to replace motor - turns out all it needed was a new capacitor, works like a dream now - thanks!
You can never kill a Rega :-) glad to help
These videos from Cheshire Audio are really useful. Thank you

Thanks so much, for sharing your knowledge of this. I have now replaced my Rega 3’s faulty Capacitor and am up and running again.
excellent clear advice it helped me bring my rega back to life! great help thanks.
Rega P3 fixed quickly and cheaply after seeing this video - thank you!
Just fixed my speed issues, exactly as described in video, new capacitor and perfect, many thanks for a great video.

Where can one purchase the Linn jig (turntable work table) in the US? UK?
Great video, very insightful.

I had those same AR 18's
Is that capacitor you replaced a 'rifa' class x2 safety capacitor???
Thanks.
Love these vids. How much would you charge to do this repair?
Give me a call at the shop.
Nice video
Confusing advice about removing the motor, since I just watched your video on the 24V upgrade, and it doesn't seem to be a problem there?
Fitting the 24v motor is a completely different procedure and doesn’t have the many possible adjustment and screw stripping issues

Hi,
I am from India. Having a P5 with Speed box. Facing the speed issue.. basically slowing down. Not always but sometimes.
Can you help me??
Did the problem solved, as question asked was last year.

@@feracingdf29 Aah, great news, glad it's sorted :-)
Bonjour je recherche la valeur de la resistance
Merci
My P3 is running consistently at the wrong speed. Only 3 years old but used very little. I'm flummoxed.
Consistently slow. Painful on a jazz album.
Must say, for a highly regarded turntable. Seems lots of problems
There is such thing as an adjustment screw
On? Not following
looks like a cheap table
