We will be moving again next year, and this will be the ninth time for me. Moving used to feel overwhelming. It was something I dreaded. So when we moved to where we are living now, and I set up a studio in the garage, I was convinced I was going to stay in place for a while. But a pandemic wasn’t a part of the plan. Like any major life event, it shifted priorities and outlook a huge amount. So we are back to the drawing board.
But I noticed it wasn’t bothering me this time. I’ve gotten good at it. And I can have fun doing all the research for potential places to live and mentally trying them on. Since this is something I’ve been doing in my spare time, and I have been using these newsletter songs as an excuse to make “slice of life” moments into music, it felt like as good a topic as any.
Musically, the major influences were some old Bossa Nova compilations, French pop music from the 60s, and the theme from “The Reading Rainbow.” Odd combination, but these have been in rotation for me while drawing lately. I’ve been enjoying letting things influence me with no intention of being clever or particularly mindful about it. There’s something fun about being very unfiltered and spontaneous. I think these are the only songs I’ve ever made where I have had no rewrites involved. It’s been a great counterpoint to working on such an elaborate record.
As with the other Hidden Hollow singles, the video is just a time-lapse of me painting the cover on Procreate.

"If you learn as you go, you gotta go just to learn." That's pretty relatable! Being stuck in one place sucks but it's all so familiar. Walking into uncertainty can be a scary but necessary step.

Even though this song is about moving, it just gives me that grand sensation of needing to step out into the unknown and trying again with a hopeful attitude despite failing. Like a positive version of ghost town, and I love it!

I'm in my first place where I'll likely stay for more than a year (hopefully even more) in over 5 years. Its a relief to think about not packing up the pieces of my life and creating a new home, at least for now. Despite that nice sense of tentative stability, there's ever-growing change happening to and around me, which I welcome but still find difficult. The future holds a lot of unknowns but this song and your music really helps remind me that so long as we keep going and trying, we can make it okay.

I know that this song is about moving, but as someone with a chronic illness trying to find treatment that sticks, these lines are very meaningful. It's so relieving to have a quiet voice singing that we can try again, let's try again, let's try again, and maybe next time it'll work or it won't and we'll try again after that.

COVID has pushed me into a geographical transition too. I've lived in the same town for the past 10 years and now I've moved back into my parents' house from July this year until January of next, when I'll be finally moving in with my partner again. It felt like a huge leap that sort of crept up on me as a possibility, but felt exciting more than scary, which is new for me. I usually resist big changes like this, but this year it's different. I wonder how many other people have experienced a similar reevaluation of their lives because of the pandemic? This song really captures the feeling of hopeful uncertainty.

Finally got home and I'm so glad I came across this song, I've loved your music for a very long time and this just makes me fall for it even more.
My family moves constantly. Actually that's how I got into your music - we had just moved for the second time back in 2013 and I found songs of yours like Welcome Home, Wandering, Ghost Towns, etc. and related to all of them. We've moved four more times since then and it's been exhausting. I'm the type to find what I like and stick with it. I hope someday I can get out of my parents' house and settle somewhere of my own choosing. Honestly I think I'd be happy just about anywhere as long as I could live alone and control my own life.
