Alchemy is the GOAT. If you’re role playing as non-magically inclined races like Nords, Orcs, Redguards or Wood Elves, alchemy can be a great alternative to enchanting.
as someone who likes to play builds around poisons I tend to actively avoid using the paralysis ones since they tend to trivialize any encounter that isn't immune to them (I do keep 2-3 in my inventory in case of emergency though), like even if it was a 2 sec paralysis, you'd still need to consider them falling down and the HORRENDOUS time it takes to get up
I love paralysis potions, both for myself to protect from falls and putting down enemies to chop them. And then there is the damage per second poison that can get absolutely massive.
Damage Magicka regineration poisons don't always stop all magicka regineration. If they have magicka regineration magic items on (mage robes) they will still have some magicka regineration. Another way to use poisons is with weakness to fire, frost, or shock on a fire, frost, or shock weapon. The poison applies before the weapon enchantment.
My issues with poison in Skyrim is that they are drastically overshadowed by other skills that are arguably more effective and versatile. Poisons don't last very long on the weapon, potions that buff you are arguably better and easier to craft, smithing and enchanting offer better and more permanent perks and to top it off there are many enemy types that resist or are outright immune to poison in general. Poisons are a neat aspect of the game that belong in the game purely for world building at this point. They do however offer a very unique method of assassination through pickpocket iirc. It used to be in oblivion that you could craft rings that would harm you and use pickpocket for the same effect.
I love my alchemy based builds. Not just poisons but fortify damage potions too. I don't like taking all 3 crafting skills because that breaks the game even on legendary but alchemy is by far my most favourite skill.
I have two reasons to not use it. I don't want to open the inventory, and I don't want to waste a shortcut for it. The second reason is my fault. In order to have a high difficulty with swords, I've upped encounter zones and did other tweaks, so poison kills me even in the late game but has nearly no effect on enemies. I probably could grind and exploit alchemy, but I can't find a reason for it because of reason one.
facts, the main reason i dont use poison is just that it takes me out of the game... i dont want to have to keep reapplying something and opening up a menu. I would even say its a little gimmicky. Its cool once if you make like a paralysis poison or something but to play the game like that just doesnt do it for me.
if you use Mort flesh from the AE version of the game, you can make some insane damage potions, i am talking about 300-600 damage, i am playing currently like a merchant (only leveling smithing, speech, alchemy and enchanting) and those potions are one shooting enemies for me
"why focus on poisons when you can emchant ir smith?" Me: why do one, when you can do all three? Smith a powerful weapon, upgrade it, emchant it and apply an appropriate poison for the situation. E.g full on damage poison (flat damage and dot) for mammoths or dragons since they don't paralyze with an absorb enchantment on a legendary weapon while in full upgraded and enchanted armor (weapon damage increase on associated armor you can enchant to it then support enchantments) then drink your weapon and armor type boosting potions
Yep i kinda was disappointed when i started realise that kind of thing. When you got poisoned by the spider your HP still decreasing slowly after the hit,but when i used even the weakest lets say 25 damage poison on my bow i dont saw the enemys HP decreasing slowly after hit, but it was an instakill. Same enemy without poison on the bow took at least 5-6 hits.So yeah what else to say.Veteran players like me 12 years in skyrim you now that feeling. And only now on the beginning of 2023 i started to modding the game.
While you are brewing poisons, the draugr are training.

FYI: Add Slaughterfish eggs/scales, or orange/blue dartwing to paralysis poison (canis root + imp stool) for lingering health damage over time.
The main disadvantage of poisons is that they don't affect a lot of commonly encountered enemies.

Canis root + imp stool + mora tappanila(i know I spelled it wrong) is a cheap but good poison
Funnily enough, I was thinking about what a pure alchemist playthrough would look like and this factors into that perfectly.

Use chokeberry from Khajit in AE with canis + imp stool for even more damage.
Deathbell combined with River Betty and chokeberry from the rare curios cc mod wil make a poison thay will wreck almost anything that isnt a dragon.
