Backpacking the William O. Douglas: A Wilderness Buffet for the Soul

  • This was a 6 day/5 night solo backpacking trip around the William O. Douglas Wilderness. Taking place in late July, I started and ended at the Richmond Mine Trail and completed a loop that I relate to a "buffet." The William O. Douglas is pure wilderness through and through. It feels like parts of it get overlooked in favor of more popular hiking destinations in the same region. I myself am guilty of this up until last year. Curiosity brought me to this place and I wanted to taste all that this wilderness had to offer. From the East side around to the Northside, I got to experience Nelson Ridge, Mt. Aix, lots of sub-alpine lakes, the PCT, the Cascade Crest, and American Ridge. Not all the trails were in the best conditions and the weather was varied as well. There are even some parts of the wilderness I didn't get to experience, while others definitely got me thinking about seconds. Let this video whet your appetite like it did mine, building a hunger for more of this wilderness. Enjoy.

Wow, circumventing Bumping Lake. Great idea! I have spent a fair amount of time backpacking the area but you truly put the package of excursions into to one fantastic trip. Keep up the great work.

Thank You. Great way to put it with the word "circumventing." There is still a lot more I would like to see in the William O. I am probably going back in late September!

Thank you for the comment. I would love to return to those mega meadows along the PCT during the rut. I bet they are loaded with bugling bulls! Hope you make it to the William O. Douglas sooner than later and get the chance to add this wilderness to your channel. Take care.

I was up by the Twin Sisters that same day, seems like long odds! Went on to summit Tumac Mountain which sits in the center of that beautiful plateau, lots of scoria and pumice and bugs. What an amazing spot!

That is crazy. I was considering adding Tumac that into the trip as well. The William O. is actually one big volcanic play ground. Hopefully we will run into each other on the trail somewhere, sometime.
