Yes and no. I personally always declare what I bought abroad but I've never been charged customs fees. I've been very lucky to have had very nice agents who just let me go. That being said you can look up the percentage of duties online and you'll see that in most cases (depends on what country you're coming from and what you bought and how much) but generally speaking the duties you'd pay are less than the refund so you're still saving some money. Again this is variable on what you are bringing back, how much and from where. For people who don't declare and get caught, the financial penalties are high and in that case it would negate any VAT savings. The lesson is you should always declare honestly! 🙂 Hope that helps!

That is so awesome you had agents who didn't charge you. And yes, I've heard horror stories of ppl who do not declare items i.e. Birkins purchased in Paris. Yikes.
@@pilar689 I can't find the exact information right now but the first $800 is not taxed then the next $1000 is taxed at 3 percent and then after that they will tax another percentage. It's my understanding that generally speaking while paying duties isn't fun, it's not quite as 'bad' as you might think!
