Why this personal support worker quit her home care job

  • Personal support workers like Gwen Stokes say home care is in crisis. She worked for Bayshore, a giant home care provider, in the Ottawa area until she decided to quit.
“I have been with clients who have passed away at home while I was with them. And then I'd have to go to the next client,” Stokes said.
Every personal support worker (PSW) that we spoke to said the wages for working in Ontario’s home care sector were appallingly low and a driving force behind many of them leaving the profession or finding better-paying work in nursing homes or hospitals.
PSWs care for people who are ill, elderly or need help with daily tasks. This can include feeding, changing and getting patients washed up for the day.
On top of low wages, PSWs said companies only pay them for the time spent with clients. None of their travel time is compensated or the time spent each day contacting clients to let them know they’re on their way.
We asked Stokes what Bayshore said when she informed them she was leaving.
“They didn't call me. They didn't ask me why,” she said. “I was absolutely stunned, and very hurt.”
We requested an interview with Bayshore, but never heard back. Then the company’s lawyer said Home Care Ontario would speak for them.
Home Care Ontario issued a statement from CEO Sue VanderBent, who said the industry was “in crisis,” pointing out that health-care professionals are paid more to work in other parts of the system and home care companies need more government help.
“As a result, staff have left home care by the thousands during the pandemic,” she wrote.

I did this for 6 months at a hospice care home, I was assigned to 5 - 7 people at a time, it was so extremely rewarding, knowing you’re there for people who otherwise have no one else, and extremely difficult and heartbreaking knowing they are alone & it’s inevitable that you’re either going to “find them” passed on, or struggling at the end, etc…
These amazing workers are so very needed and should be paid, supported, and cared for better so the people that need them have them.

Thanks Marketplace for looking into this Bayshore is the worst care provider out of the four companys we've had. PSWs need better pay and patients need better care. CEOs are crooks profiting from the week elderly not being cared. Doug Ford you lost my vote because of this Marketplace show, you driving off what were you running from.

Sorely underpaid to take care of our most precious assets. Yet bank managers and others that manage assets under care, get bonus's and incentives. NOT.FAIR.

As someone who worked as a direct support worker we work and have training at times similarly to nursing home staff for minimum wage but at most 15$h and support workers who are at care homes get paid around 22$ a hour for rather similar work so why work as a direct support worker. This area needs more funding to pay there staff properly as well attract better trained and retain staff who are given better opportunities.

True. The vulnerable people sector is the hardest job I ever had. Politics are the worst too. I got out as well. Very important to shed light on .

Laid off I took a job like this. 3 wks I quit. The majority of the places sent to are dirty have adult children and grandchildren living in the home. Doing skilled care not license to do for unskilled pay.

The work expected for those who do an excellent job ,it’s not enough money. The time ,the gas, people need to be rewarded for quality care. Burnout is real for RNs as well.

They don't just deserve a raise; they deserve to have more staff so they're not stretched so thin, and can take a few minutes to process when a client dies in front of them.
Honestly the erosion of staffing levels feels much worse to me than the lack of wages, though the latter has certainly discouraged people from taking the jobs...

As a personal support worker, I understand this all too well, however, when one person dies, you still have others to tend to, and don’t forget that person who has passed away, would want you to continue helping others, people are very appreciative of us coming in to see them But if you’ve lost your love for the industry and cannot take the loss and keep on trucking then unfortunately I understand and we understand, this industry is a revolving door people come we care for them, and then they either go to long-term care, hospice, or pass away at home However the majority of people need us, remember everyone’s lives that you touch you do make a difference

It is sad that good people like this that leave PSW. I myself had many that could not handle the mental affects that come with this kind of job.

Caring jobs are rewarding job, that doing care with respect, dignity, and professionally it’s hard, but in fact in caring field less salrey and to much long shift aswell, and also not secure I mean even our life is not secure in caring,
I work for autistic patients,it’s very hard, and less salrey.
