- Written in 1980 by Bonnie Deuschle, this song was inspired by the words of John the Baptist in John 1:29, “…Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the word."
At the time this song was created, Bonnie was still a student at Christ For The Nations but was suffering from severe laryngitis and couldn't speak a word, let alone sing. As the revelation came to her, she was sitting alone in the corner of a Texas restaurant and scribbled all the lyrics across sheets of paper napkins. By the time the restaurant closed, the song was complete. She saved the napkins ;)
"At the time I was writing out this scripture, the verses literally began to flow-as if Heaven was downloading their song to my spirit-I wrote down the words as I received the revelation of the Lamb. Each scene of certain events of Jesus’s life came alive to me... The laryngitis left, but the song, the message, and the revelation live forever." - Bonnie Deuschle

Behold The Lamb (song lyrics):
Verse 1
The crowd was there by the riverside
Standing in line to be baptized
When through the crowd a stranger came
His eyes warm his clothes were plain
Yet something was very different,
He was no ordinary man
The words he spoke were words of life
By his holy presence they were overcome
Then John stepped up to behold this man
His face aglow with outstretched hands
He kneeled in the water without a word
When the glory of all God’s Heaven was heard
And the Holy Ghost descended on this stranger like a dove
John stood amazed and as he gazed
Through tear-filled eyes you could hear him say
Chorus 1
Behold the Lamb of God
Who takes away the sins of the world
Whose sandal I am not worthy to untie
Who loved a lonely sinner such as I
Behold the Lamb of God
Who takes away the sins of the world
Holy God of Israel Chosen One
Savior of mankind Messaiah’s come
Verse 2
The crowd was there at Jerusalem
To question this man as He prayed for them
They’d seen Him heal and raise the dead
People set free, five thousand were fed
And they saw Him heal a blind man
With a little piece of clay
And as He washed the dirt away
His eyes were healed and you could hear him say
Chorus 2
Behold the Lamb of God
The Glory and the Light of the world
Who loved a lonely sinner just like me
I know I once was blind but now I see
Behold the Lamb of God
The Glory and the Light of the world
With love and healing flowing through His veins
The seed David chosen now to reign
Behold the Lamb
Verse 3
The crowd was there at Calvary
To see this Lamb suffer and bleed
They mocked Him and cursed His name
Though it was for them He carried the shame
But He said Father forgive them
For they don’t know what they do
Then He hung His head and as He died
The sky turned black and a soldier cried
Chrous 3
Behold the Lamb of God
Who takes away the sins of the world
The son of God laid down his life for man
But in three days He arose to live again
Behold the Lamb of God
Who takes away the sins of the world
The son of God laid down his life for man
But in three days He arose to live again
Behold the Lamb of God
Whose risen above with healing in his wings
The Lord of Lords of whom creation sings
Our God, the Prince Of Peace, King of Kings
Behold the Lamb
One of my favourite worship songs. So anointed. So glad to be able to hear it again.
Yes Carolyn! Timeless!
Thank you for this powerful reminder. On such a Passover season He rescued us.
Such a timely song. It's a seasonal song. The glory and the light of God.
Such as I!
Incredible. Speechless. Only praise🙏❤️
Thank you Pastor Bonnie.
