@@chelseasexton7904 I know. Wheatus is a good band that still makes great music. It's just people refer to them as 'One Hit Wonder.' These guys are still making a living by doing what they love to do. And for me, that is a sign of a successful artist. And they have a quite big loyal fanbase.
Brendan is one of the most down-earth musicians you're ever going to run into. The band deserves more love. Shout out to the song that refuses to die, B!

Got to meet Wheatus after a concert they played at a now demolished dive bar and YOU'RE RIGHT it was hilarious because their set opened with the lead singer telling the crowd "Don't worry we know what song you want to hear and we'll get to it but first let us play some shit you probably haven't heard" BTW Chevel was the opening act. I thought Wheatus was an all girl band because I'd only ever heard Teenage Dirtbag on the radio so I was surprised when the band took the stage🤣
@@Vamroc I've been to 3 concerts at Esquires in Bedford, UK and they usually say something similar at the start as well because they know we all love it. Then you hear some of their other music and you wonder why you've not heard it before (I had as I have all of their albums but a lot of people only really know the one song). They are absolutely amazing and they play for and with the crowd, not for themselves.
Lemonade, Hump and Dump Em, so many great songs that never got to our ears in the late 90's. My 13 year old is a huge fan of wheatus and has met Brendan and the group with plans to see them again. Very Humble and appreciative of there fans and the gift they have of doing what they love. @@Vamroc

I always loved how the song name drops Iron Maiden and sounds nothing like Iron Maiden. Guy is clearly a metal head but went into alt pop music.

I’ve always enjoyed this song. He was on Chris Demakes A Podcast recently taking about this song and doing a deep dive into the writing and recording of it.
It’s strange that wheatus didn’t do well in the US since It was my teenage anthem being 15 at the time it dropped and went gold (released for youngens), it was hugely popular in the Cleveland area especially since it fit in with the large punk crowd and Warped Tour
I made a music video for this song in college back in 2003. Its been one of my favorites since i was a teenage dirtbag myself.
This is one of the best songs to come out of the 90's. My husband and I both still have this in regular rotation.

This song isn't about a murder, the crazy murderer just happened to live on the same street and when he was caught, the newspaper called him a "dirtbag" and that's where they learned that word. That's it
I always loved the scene in "Generation Kill" where they're singing this song.

It was on the periphery, given how great music was in the 90s, that was easy done.
I remember, 98, year 12, working at Maccas hearing this, and it was awesome!, 8pm to midnight shift, then into school next day.
I loved this song when it came out too!! Brings back fond memories of being a teen in the late 90s.

That's from the Malibu Ken album, which is a collaboration of Tobacco and Aes. They had another one-off song before that called "Dirt".
There's a really good book about the Ricky Kasso case called "The Acid King."
There is also a great metal band from the 90s. “Acid King”.

I remember this song being all over MTV in the summer of 2000 in the UK.
Same here in Germany, too. The song became absolutely massive and was all over MTV and the radio, and we young teens loved it. Those were the days.
This song was in the charts when I started year 8 (just became teenagers). I just started at a new school, so I was still getting to know everyone.
We went on school camp and we were split into grpups. My mates and I called our group the teenage dirtbags!
I'm still very good friends with those guys after all these years.
Something about the song makes me teary. Not sure if it’s 80’s nostalgia or if it’s the simple innocence of the song. Can’t explain it.

What struck me as funny was the way he said "upwards" before that which actually adds absolutely no information to the statement because it's still under 24 member switches, isn't it? It has to be because it still has the adjective "nearly" in it and that's what "nearly" means.

What I really hate about those videos is the stock footage inserted à propos of whatever is being said. But then again, I'm the one completely wasting a Sunday morning watching whatever my smartphone is shoving down my brain, so I guess it's on me.
I saw these guys open for Eve 6 back in the late 90s at Birch Hill in Old Bridge, NJ, I live just down the road. Opm was also there and I love them now. I definitely remember them playing this song because it was so popular at the time and was hoping they would play it.

My buddys birthday party theme the year this song came out was Teenage Dirtbag, his parents hired this punk band that did a pretty decent cover of the song along with a bunch of other then popular songs. Knowing the backstory of the song really gives the birthday party a dark twist

So I know there was a book called 'Say you love Satan' about the murderer. There's a photo of him on the cover and my friend told me he looked exactly like me.
The photo on my thumbnail is me at about 47 years old. As you can see, I have a sparrow on my hand and am not at all interested in the devil...he's just a desperate and empty concept for the weak minded loop thinking blah talking fiends.

Ah yes, Ricky Kasso. The "Acid King". Not only are there songs about him, one band is named after him.
Ricky had a tragic back story.
His parents and the community rejected him -parents kicked him out of their house at 12. Imagine everyone knowing you’re homeless as a kid in a squeaky clean neighborhood neighborhood like that and saying “well he wouldn’t play football like his dad wanted so 🤷🏻♂️” no other choice but to sell drugs. Those substances to a developing mind are dangerous. Not excusing what he did, but not surprised at all.
He did have one of the coolest nicknames ever though.

I knew nothing of this band when I first heard this tune. I thought the lead singer was a woman and the song was a groundbreaking 'lesbian steals away Chad's girlfriend' type of tune. Felt kind of foolish when I learned the truth

I remember this crime story! did not know that all of this inspired a song hahaha that's turning something negative into something positive and making a better life from it. these days, people are so weak so they off themselves or murder others. the just need a good inspirational story like this guy to help them keep going.
I think it is quite insensitive to downplay someone with suicidal thoughts or mental health issues as weak.None of that could easily go away.Of course murdering someone or suicide is not a good solution but without getting help will result in that.I don't really see Teenage Dirtbag as a happy song lyrically obviously.

i had a similar story when I was in high school a guy killed a neighbor friend she went to jr high and he was in high school he killed her then dumped her in the mountains around San Jose then came to school and told his friends and took his truck with other students in the back this all started on Monday and idk how many people went with him in the 3 days before someone finally called police but our school had the media there for weeks it was crazy
