Ha! There are levels and then there are levels. As a jazz musician I recognise plenty of the orchestra (and have played with some of them - Maddy Dowdeswell and Callum Au on Trombones in second row). They are among the finest musicians in the country and I really look up to and admire their talent. But then there’s World Class and Hiromi is at the absolute top of that, can’t think of any other Pianist alive who can do what she does, not just the astonishing technique and jazz chops but the absolute joy she does it all with - it just flows from within her. There are only a handful of musicians on the planet like this and what a pleasure to be able to see her perform.

@@DanieltheTruebadour I'm not sure how to rank Hiromi vs. Tatum. I'm not even going to try to attempt at making reasonable facsimiles (on the piano of course) of their best work. The others, I can do it or imagine doing it, but Tatum and Hiromi are so far out there, they seem unreachable. Tatum's doing those 10 note chords and out of this world technique while Hiromi is doing classical virtuoso level technique with crazy syncopations and time signature changes. I'm not even going to try because it'll likely sound like garbage. I'm glad Hiromi is here, I thought jazz was done giving us these masters.

I bought her debut album about 15 years ago, and was impressed with her musicianship (both musicality and virtuosity), thinking that another talented pianist had emerged.
But, I was wrong … well, sort of. “Another talented pianist” now seems to be understatement. As many comments on her vids say, she has become among the greatest jazz pianists of all time, or perhaps even the very best already.
With no sheet music or charts, she just improvises like crazy whether with a rhythm section or on her own. Back in the 70’s, I admired Keith Jarrett's solo piano performances, but sometimes found them a bit pedantic or self-indulgent or even boring. But not so at all with Hiromi - her solo performances are always innovative, melodic and enchanting.
Hiromi already showed her versatility on her 1st album, and I liked it. But versatile musicians often fail to establish their own sound and end up being just one of them. Well, again it’s not the case with Hiromi. While retaining her versatility, she has successfully developed her own “Hiromi” sound, which is so recognizable.
In my view, Hiromi may well be the jazz pianist of the century. And she is still exploring and developing …. Damn!

I agree. She can play any style and take it beyond what it was before. I'm glad someone like this came along. I'm a competent pianist and can somewhat faithfully reproduce some of Oscar Petersen's more complex work (and I can only reproduce it, I can't do that insane improv at 150bpm with 16th notes mixed with eighth note triplets in the moment like he could). I haven't even tried reproducing Art Tatum because it seems a little unreachable, like Cziffra's arrangement of "Flight of the Bumblebee". I watch Hiromi play and she so far ahead, she's like Tatum, unreachable. When someone's that far ahead, they're no longer playing the piano, like I do, instead she's performing magic. She's a magician. I need to go see her live, it's been a long time since I've seen a magician.

Hiromi is no doubt one of THE piano players of the 21st century. Her vocabulary seems endless and it's so much more than perfect technique. Her improvisation is astonishing. She plays this version of I've got Rythm a lot. As great as it is it's hard to believe she could be any better than this! In my opinion she is! I love how she totally emerses her self as one with the music. Her personality shines with every note (everything she plays not just this) The fact that she's so adorable is besides the point and her love for playing is expressed with her many playful faces 😂😉.

This is like a fireworks show. You keep thinking, 'this is the finale!'. Nope. Another round of fireworks goes off, only bigger and better than before. 'This is the finale!'. Nope. and it keeps on going, totally knocking us out, on and on. Hiromi's unbelievable

The phrase "best in the world" gets tossed around and at times gets used very uncessarily for certain musicians who don't always live up to their hype but i consider pianist Hiromi as truly the best in the world and she has definitely lived up to her well earned reputation. If she plays in your town, i highly recommend you go and see her, it's a can't miss show and you won't be disappointed.

I've had the great pleasure of seeing of the finest pianists in the world over the last 20 plus years and i can promise you now, you won't find any better than Hiromi, she's as good as they get. If she plays near where you live, make sure you go and see her, she's fantastic.

I wholeheartedly agree - she's right up there. I suppose there are some good and bad reasons a lot of amateur and professional critics put her a good way down their lists of best all-time jazz pianists - and I daresay probably they're mostly bad reasons. I've heard her 3x with the Trio Project and once solo. It is a fulfilling, thrilling and almost emotionally exhausting experience - all in a good way. She is brilliant in invention, composition and execution, and exudes a charm and energy that really makes it worth the trip to go see her live. And you'll never see a musician having as good a time cranking out amazing music.
In the Musician Pantheon in my head, Hiromi and Chick Corea take turns in the #1 and #2 positions. Ms. Uehara is the only artist I've gone to see 4 times (and I'm starting to feel the urge to make it 5). I think she's more exciting live than Chick - though check back with me after I go see him with Wynton Marsalis & orchestra next month...
In videos you see/hear and albums to date, she's in her mid-20's to late 30's - it's scary to think how good she'll be at 50 or 60!

What Stravinsky and Fats Waller , Monk and Hiromi all share in common is the contemporary aesthetic, that sometimes includes humour and a less subjective over wrought take on art music.
