I don't think many people realize that DsO released 3! projects in 2005 , just a year after Si, monumentum; that being two 20 minute long songs on two different split albums, and 30+ minute EP Kenose which is insane to me really. Also a fun fact; T.T. of Abigor likely played some guitar parts on Fas - ite, because both Fas and Abigor's Fractal Possession came out in 2007 and have very similar production values, considering supposedly Abigor and DsO know and collaborate with each other.
It's pretty evident that T.T. also performed in The Long Defeat and another NoEvDia release of last year (should be as equally obvious, even only in one track). His leads style is just unmistakable and always add a magical touch on the already brilliant piece.
The strength of DsO has _always_ been their lyrics: They take the usual trope and stereotype of black metal, which is the usual "LOL HAIL SATAN" and make _terrifying._ And their take on politics and other aspects are equally terrifying. Christian Bouche is a god damn genius I swear.
I wish I could go back and re-experience them for the first time. They changed everything for me. I was terrified and in awe in a way I’ve never been before-or since-with music. Thanks for doing this!
The Long Defeat is easily one of my favorite DSO albums. I think the concept has to do with mankind's technological revolutions and how, over time, it will inevitably bring about a hell for us that even Satan himself can't quite understand. Through us, our creative aspect from God and our inherent corruption will merge and mankind will birth our own, yet to be seen but slowly emerging, hell ("A cosmos within the cosmos./It is mankind, the gods,/And all the devils of creation at once./And something else - something new"). I think that's why the album cover is a mound of coal (at least I think it is), the essential fuel for the industrial revolution. One thing worth mentioning about DSO is that they have moved to all analog recording which not only ties in with their movement towards less metaphysical content, but makes listening to them on vinyl much more satisfying. I appreciate when a band goes the extra mile and goes all analog.

The Long Defeat fucking sucked. I gave it 3 relistens and it still sucks. Utter trash compared to the previous three releases, which unfortunately seems will be the height of their musical expression. Paracletus and Furnaces are amazing.

One of the GOATs of Avant-Garde metal, their music was my gateway into Black Metal. I remember listening to Si Monvmentvm Reqvires Circvmspice for the first time and it changed my life
The appeal in DsO for me is that they came at a time of apparent stagnation in black metal, but you can say metal as a whole, and showed how much more to the form there is as they proceeded to drag it further down the abyss. They showed other bands what metal lacked, what they lacked, and actually put in the effort to form a coherent and worthwhile philosophy and give Satanism what the Norwegians failed to, a seriousness that escaped the trappings of the cosplaying charade and gave us something much more malicious, sinister and evil. They also put to shame the faux-elitism that mainly cared about the aesthetics and shallow grandstanding in the form of scene cred, and, instead, showed by example that elitism only resides in the soul and the execution of art, as they stated in their Bardo Methodology interview in 2019. One of the things I also appreciate about them a lot is how their influences encompass so many different genres, styles and musicians that go outside the boundaries of metal, and it's quite perceptive of them to state how one of the leading problems with metal at the time was that it only looked for inspiration inside metal and not outside, that many bands were limited in that sense and had a limited musical perspective. To me, they will always embody the black metal ideal and have with their vast discography exemplified what it means to be radical and extreme. And in regards to The Long Defeat, I don't think they've showed their age at all, on the contrary, they continue to amaze me and surprise me in ways I never could have imagined and I can't wait to see what the follow-up album to TLD is going to look and sound like.
I'll claim that soundwise they took a lot of inspiration from the Swedish scene when they changed their sound: from bands like Funeral Mist, Watain, the Necromorbus production sound and, obviosuly, Malign (obvious since the final track for Si Monvmentvm is a reworking of their of track Ashes and Bloodstench). They also made an interview for Hellish Massacre back in 2001, which was penned by E. of Watain.
An EP collection video would be great. There really is some remarkable material presented on those releases which are sadly overlooked by allot of folks.
I'm quite certain that the figure featured on the Fas album cover is modeled after Batailles' "Acéphale," which, the design itself was his take on Nietzsche's overman, representing the death of God in the human psyche.
One has a head and the other famously doesn't :p Still, half of the lyrics of Fas are directly taken from Bataille--and thank Satan for that, because without this band I never would have discovered that man's brilliant work.
It certainly is that, but there's a lot of nested symbolism there as with all of their album covers. The Acephale image was probably inspired in a big way by the Vitruvian Man. And then of course, there is the symbolism of the Fall....

The third song lyrics are in French, performed by Spica, just like all other French parts since Paracletus. The vocal parts on the rest of the album are performed by: Rostén, Aspa and M. At least that's the common take on things.

@@nuit-scs8970 This is a theory that I've been advocating myself. Especially the opening track gives me some strong Silenius vibes. I'm convinced that T.T. from Abigor has contributed at least some of the lead guitars parts on the album as well. Same goes for Fas, and other albums perhaps.
Im usually very fast with my judgement of records in general, let it be Motörhead or a one man BM project from Bumfucklandia, but it always took several attempts to "get a grasp" on a DSO album. That doesn't mean that I fully understand every song nor the lyrics. This video helps a lot, thank you very much for that.
Bumfucklandia is a great place to visit { if you are loose that way} But back to the music I lovev some of their albums . Paraclettus makes my short hair prickle and thats good. Batailles and Nietzsche are obvious influences, but I also get a lot of Hegel in their lyrical content. I get the idea that Satan is supposed to be absolute subjectivity, and "the fall" is a fall into subjectivity, as knowing one's own fundamental nothingness, experienced as temporal distance from being, the absolute, God, or whatever. And the "vertiginous movement towards the void," like in Bread of Bitterness, reminds me of what is referred to in skeptic traditions as "epoche," or the suspense of judgment, after reason in pursuit of knowledge upon the flagship of doubtfulness has destroyed itself, leaving only a confused, self-contradictory flailing of the human intellect. Very Hegelian.
Underrated comment. They very much follow the theme of Hegel’s “course of history”. You can follow all the way from their first albums being theistic in nature, eventually and inevitably moving towards nihilism and post modern thought. From faith to fall to “Verstand”.
I’m black guy who still enjoys DsO. I figured that they simply have (sorry to say) amateurish philosophical ideas. These ideas, though, drive their artistic vision and overall approach to how they create music. There’s a tension of Good and Evil in the music. This tension creates extreme volatility between the person with whom they disagree and themselves; an atmosphere of hatred that manifests through the music. I believe they intentionally choose horrible people as singers and mute them with their own words. And this affront of individual autonomy and ideological beliefs, creates the hatred needed to make a good black metal record. But yeah, I agree with you-their approach is very Hegelian (his dialectics), especially this tension I mentioned earlier. Anyway, that’s my take. I could be wrong. But that’s kinda what I got from their interview.
Yeah, there's a lot more to the band - philosophically speaking - other than Batailles and Nietzsche. They even included this Hegel quote: "Death is the most terrible thing; And to maintain its works is what requires the greatest strength" in DA EP.

Great video Wyatt. Two thoughts to add. 1: You should have definitely at least mentioned the EPs they have released. Kenose, Diabolus Asconditus, Chaining the Katechon, absolute masterpieces and because of their short time length for me they were easier to dive into. 2: The long defeat was a grower for me. I was a bit iffy about it at my first listen because of the great change of style but the key is to not compare it to their previous albums. It is a stylistic change for the band both musically and lyrically and it can be compared only with the albums the band is going to release (hopefully). But yeah i would agree that "the long defeat" should not be anyone's first dso album to check.
I al not sure if i smoked too much but i got an idea that long defeat is like new king want to kill old king, and all music goes into that direction, and in the end when they kill him, new music style on last song and lyrics can show us that it wasnt good direction with new king (new singer is new king)
I think you you did an excellent job of giving an overview of a very challenging and sometimes recondite band. I'd have liked to hear more about the mysterious nature of their lineup and the clear influences of post rock on the Trilogy.
Trying to create the maelstrom of man & evil in musical form is always difficult, especially with just guitars, bass, drums & vocals Deathspell Omega get remarkably close. Please remember they're older now hence one of reasons for the overall pace of The Long Defeat! I wouldn't be surprised that if they ever perform live it will be because they are splitting up. "Si monumentum" has always been my favourite. Even though I can recognise "Paracletus" is FAR more precise, showing superior craft and maturity. There's something about the combination of the straight forward BM approach with progressive elements that strikes just right before they went dissonance bonkers I guess with the lyrics it's up to the listener. I think you can go as far into it as you want if you're willing to read around DsO's philosophical interests and influences. I don't believe it's something that's easily understood without that background even if you're the biggest genius.
The first 2 records are very different. I still like them, and not just in a "Listening to understand where they came from then never again" way. They are more 1st wavey, blackened thrash, but to me, even then, you can hear some early themes which point to later works. It's almost like 2 different bands, but just because I like one doesn't mean I hate the other. I still prefer their work after, but I don't HATE the early records. Furnaces of Palingenesia is a masterpiece, and a record that requires your full, undivided attention, with the lights off...

A kind of random fact i find funny about DsO is their closeness to the french synthwave scène, especially Carpenter Brut, even though they don't admit it.
Deathspell Omega was very influenced by Satyricon's "Rebel Extravaganza" - chaotic and trippy kind of way sound/riff-wise. First thought that came to my mind when listening to DsO back in 2005.

I'm still quite partial to the first two DSO records they did with Shaxul. His vocals are just so much fun and I tend to like all of the projects he is involved in. From the modern, Aspa era DSO, I don't particularly love anything. Drought EP probably being the one I enjoy the most. I just find DSO fan projects like Serpent Column more enjoyable generally. Or Dissonant sound in Death Metal, over Black Metal.

As a philosphy student i can confirm that deathspell omega's lyrics aren't everyday black metal satanist lyrics but pretentious. It's clear that his guys know what they're talking about and really make an innovative philosophy, i personally think theistic satanism is often very philosophically poor and too centred around mysticism occultism (and maybe i need research but i have never come cross the term "metaphysical satanism" until i found out about this guys)
I'm getting into LaVeyan (atheistic) Satanism and I feel like it's the less risqué of the two sects of it anyway. The symbols associated with both are cool, though!
took me a few re-readings but I don't think they're necessarily saying DSO are pretentious. More the opposite. They're saying that DSO's themes are not just typical BM satanism that's pretentious, they're more substantive and deep than that. That's my interpretation anyways
Well, it's really hard *NOT* to be pretentious when talking about Deathspell Omega, especially when referring to Paracletus, Kenose, Furnaces, etc. Since 2004, they have always been a "highbrow" sort of black metal band. What I very much appreciate with DsO is that, by not doing any live shows, they effectively want their listeners to really delve deep into their lyrics and to glean their own special meanings from each of their masterworks. They are not a band that you casually throw on just for background noise; no, Deathspell is a band that is made to be listened intently and to be appreciated through days, months or even several years of re-listens. Even if a post-2004 album of theirs doesn't click for you at first, KEEP. LISTENING. because eventually you'll find motifs in the music that'll make you go, "Ah-HA! That's really clever." This is why I'm planning to really form a listening relationship with The Long Defeat over the next several years of my life despite it initially being one of my most disappointing albums of 2022, because there is always something more to their music and lyrics than at first glance. Also, The Furnaces of Palingenesia is currently my favourite DsO album! What a way to elucidate upon the pitfalls of humankind and their willingness to believe anything shoved down their throats... Sonic Vortex's video really made me appreciate the album a lot more.
Whenever I go to listen to something that isn’t DsO I just get a guilty feeling like I could be listening to DsO and am not. Then I enjoy whatever else I’m listening to just a little less. And ultimately end up just switching to DsO cuz they’re just better. Does this phase pass or is this just the black hole I’m going to inhabit now?
I am literally stuck there right with you, no end in sight for me. I keep trying out bands that are considered their influences, and I’ve tried listening to bands whom are their contemporaries, but none of it feels as satisfying. Their music has a unique spirituality.

Synarchy of Molten Bones is my 2nd favorite album. I think it is by far the least accessible, and it absolutely required the most listens to really understand whats going on in the mix

One thing I always wonder about is how DSO became so intellectual. In their 2000 northern heritage interview they sound incredibly edgy and try hard just like euronymous but in their later interviews they seem like very intelligent and they are extremely well spoken. Like how? What did they experience and read?

Also I remember a journalist who met Christian referred to him as looking like a middle aged European businessman, so I'm guessing they are after substance more than style as they are maturing.
*Deathspell Omega* is the greatest band ever was and possibly will ever be, and of course they are The Titan of Black Metal ... What do you expect from a band? Out-of-this-world song-writing and musicianship, phenomenal performances of musical instruments (drum, bass, guitar) and vocals; deep and complex lyrical contents about various philosophical, metaphysical and theological aspects of human existence that force you to really think and learn much much more and think again. I challenge people to name just one other band in the entire music history that matches this level of intellect and excellence. This is not just some random fanboy-type statement and I understand that music is subjective but there is certainly a meaningful question to ask for the comparison between Richard Wagner and some random pop star when it comes to music; I am really looking for some names that match with the towering place of DSO in music not just Black Metal ... Of course their approach toward Orthodox Satanism and their lyrics, that can be considered as the manifesto of Metaphysical Satanism, might not be everyone's cup of tea. But for me, this is the only reason Black Metal exists. If Black Metal is not about Satan, understood broadly and transcendentally not as a creature with horns or garbage like that, and The Concept of Evil and its central place in our human life, it is not Black Metal anyway no matter how extreme or infernal or second-wavysh the music is. Apparently, this is not the way most of the people want Black Metal to be; they want it to be just plain and simple with some harsh vocals, lyrics about fantasy worlds, and cringe meaningless "Hail Satan" slogan, in other words, a genre among others. Black Metal must be complex, difficult and troublesome, without which it is just a music as any other genre, and the paragon example of this type of Black Metal is Deathspell Omega. I can write and talk about them for hours and days and months without being bored but a comment section is not the place. Also, I never understood how people could even compare bands like Krallice, Mgła, Batushka, Imperial Triumphant, Altar Of Plagues et al to Deathspell Omega! First of all the whole reason for the existence of most of these bands is Deathspell Omega and the type of Black Metal they introduced. And secondly, Deathspell Omega is in its own league and none of these bands are even remotely comparable to the level of excellence Deathspell Omega presents. And finally, I must add that without Mikko's outstanding vocal performances, Deathspell Omega were not the same legends they are. Mikko is an essential part of Deathspell Omega. His absence in most of the songs of the recent album shows his essential role in the band and how detrimental it could be to remove him from the band. Deathspell Omega must not succumb to the masses otherwise they would lose the unique place they have. If we have to care about the masses, why should we listen to Black Metal at all? Those who wish to listen to politically-correct music, they must look for it somewhere else, not in Black Metal and especially not in Deathspell Omega.
C'mon, man Sigh was right there in the early 2000's coming strong from the 90's releasing progressive, challenging and musically varied stuff like Imaginary Sonicescape and Gallows Gallery.
Is Sigh experimental/avant-garde? Yes definitely. However is it in the same technical and dissonant way that DsO is ? As a fan of both bands, I'de argue that not, Sigh is more experimental in the way they mix all kind of influences and instruments while DsO is more experimental in the way they compose riffs. Otherwise if we're talking about experimental black metal bands more broadly, in the 2000's besides Sigh and DsO there were plenty more, like Dødheimsgard, Solefald, Arcturus, Master's Hammer and so on.
Sigh at that point wasn’t doing anything in the vain of technicality or dissonance. Believe me I enjoy Sigh and agree they’re one of a kind but DSO’s approach is different and more influential.
I think Synarchy is heavier than Drought by a substantial margin. Also, I don't get how it doesn't stand out. It's pure angry obliteration. And I would call Furnaces one of their most melodic.
to me paracletus is in short all about satan as the true comforting spirit to mankind and all who seek him, and not the supposed christian holy spirit that the bible would have you believe. this theory is backed by the highly emotive nature of the album in comparison to other deathspell omega albums, more over on standout track "phosphene" (be my child! be my promise!) it has a very strong feverish religious ecstatic feeling to me.
I recall the afternoon when I realized what they are about. It was the Fas that did it for me. The repellent scars of abandon and election just left me totally speechless and it all felt like falling down a religous/mytholigical spiral and getting increasingly more and more demented and insane. I remember just laughing in disbelief that something like this exists 😃 "The Warmth of a Divine blessing"

You always seem to kinda overlook kenose and I'm not sure why. In my opinion it's one of there very best, top 3 without a doubt. Do you just not like it or is it because it's an EP?

VinAnd Sori have done a long and very in depth YT video about Kenose I. They've done thorough vids on Chore for the lost, Sola Fide II and Abscission (Wings of Perdition) as well. Vincent is an open minded, intelligent dude and clearly well versed in theology and the Bible which makes the vids a must watch, imo.

My biggest thing about the whole debate regarding fascist characters in the outfit is that there actually should not be a question regarding those things, people in the band are detestable fascists, people in the band are insufferable leftists, people in the band have no opinions on anything and have nothing important to contribute except musically. The reason why i still continue to listen to this band is because of the sheer objectiveness of the art despite the glaring contrast in the forces that are actually at play. As they have mentioned, determinism has never been the end goal for the project, and is the wrong way to interpret the themes of the project. It is also asking the wrong questions as to whether or not anybody or anything involved in the project is okay or not okay. Bataille's position on art for example is clear in interviews and his works. Art, and especially new art, is inherently an evil trait in a person who interacts with any medium relating to it. It is not an argument of separating art from artist, it is quite literally that art, and the responsibility of the artist, transcends those concepts. There is not just a gray area in that statement, but, as campy as this will sound, a gaping void that only exists to those that basically eject themselves into it. And even just talking about the surface level apolitical perspective that anybody can see, DsO is one of the only groups that make genuine efforts to add something not only important, but new to the conversation of those who are constantly in violence with all sides, which is universally an evil position to take. DsO is unapologetically anti life to the core for reasons that I still continue to wrestle with personally, because that shit in a lot of ways is built meticulously with irrefutable evidence, and something I have to continue to absorb, even after years of listening to them. Utterly despicable, and yet it nags because more people in music should confront the themes that they present. This band has clearly ruined my brain and my spirit lmfao
One of my favorite moments of Shaxul from the 2007 interview is when he roasted orthodox/religious black metal, he goes “how great to be proud to be a slave, right?!”
Metaphysical just means that which exist beyond the physical. Therefore, they viewed Satan as an actual supernatural being as opposed to atheistic satanist who uses the term "satan" as a general term for an "adversary" to Christianity.

Oh, Gorguts is definitely an influence on DSO and Luc Lemay and Hasjarl are friends. I believe DSO mentioned Gorguts in their Bardo Methodology interview but could be misremembering.
If I’m not mistaken, they didn’t discover Gorguts until afterwards. They took their dissonance from modern classical music (and maybe jazz), rather than other metal bands.

The strength of DsO has _always_ been their lyrics: They take the usual trope and stereotype of black metal, which is the usual "LOL HAIL SATAN" and make _terrifying._ And their take on politics and other aspects are equally terrifying. Christian Bouche is a god damn genius I swear.
I still think Furnaces might be one of the very few albums that I find genuinely disturbing.

I’m still getting the same feeling from Fas, nearly twenty years later I’m still unraveling the thread.
The Long Defeat is easily one of my favorite DSO albums. I think the concept has to do with mankind's technological revolutions and how, over time, it will inevitably bring about a hell for us that even Satan himself can't quite understand. Through us, our creative aspect from God and our inherent corruption will merge and mankind will birth our own, yet to be seen but slowly emerging, hell ("A cosmos within the cosmos./It is mankind, the gods,/And all the devils of creation at once./And something else - something new"). I think that's why the album cover is a mound of coal (at least I think it is), the essential fuel for the industrial revolution.
One thing worth mentioning about DSO is that they have moved to all analog recording which not only ties in with their movement towards less metaphysical content, but makes listening to them on vinyl much more satisfying. I appreciate when a band goes the extra mile and goes all analog.

The Long Defeat fucking sucked. I gave it 3 relistens and it still sucks. Utter trash compared to the previous three releases, which unfortunately seems will be the height of their musical expression. Paracletus and Furnaces are amazing.

The appeal in DsO for me is that they came at a time of apparent stagnation in black metal, but you can say metal as a whole, and showed how much more to the form there is as they proceeded to drag it further down the abyss. They showed other bands what metal lacked, what they lacked, and actually put in the effort to form a coherent and worthwhile philosophy and give Satanism what the Norwegians failed to, a seriousness that escaped the trappings of the cosplaying charade and gave us something much more malicious, sinister and evil. They also put to shame the faux-elitism that mainly cared about the aesthetics and shallow grandstanding in the form of scene cred, and, instead, showed by example that elitism only resides in the soul and the execution of art, as they stated in their Bardo Methodology interview in 2019. One of the things I also appreciate about them a lot is how their influences encompass so many different genres, styles and musicians that go outside the boundaries of metal, and it's quite perceptive of them to state how one of the leading problems with metal at the time was that it only looked for inspiration inside metal and not outside, that many bands were limited in that sense and had a limited musical perspective. To me, they will always embody the black metal ideal and have with their vast discography exemplified what it means to be radical and extreme.
And in regards to The Long Defeat, I don't think they've showed their age at all, on the contrary, they continue to amaze me and surprise me in ways I never could have imagined and I can't wait to see what the follow-up album to TLD is going to look and sound like.
I'll claim that soundwise they took a lot of inspiration from the Swedish scene when they changed their sound: from bands like Funeral Mist, Watain, the Necromorbus production sound and, obviosuly, Malign (obvious since the final track for Si Monvmentvm is a reworking of their of track Ashes and Bloodstench). They also made an interview for Hellish Massacre back in 2001, which was penned by E. of Watain.
An EP collection video would be great. There really is some remarkable material presented on those releases which are sadly overlooked by allot of folks.
SMRC, FAS and Paracletus have sequentially changed my life forever.
I'm quite certain that the figure featured on the Fas album cover is modeled after Batailles' "Acéphale," which, the design itself was his take on Nietzsche's overman, representing the death of God in the human psyche.

Still, half of the lyrics of Fas are directly taken from Bataille--and thank Satan for that, because without this band I never would have discovered that man's brilliant work.
It certainly is that, but there's a lot of nested symbolism there as with all of their album covers. The Acephale image was probably inspired in a big way by the Vitruvian Man. And then of course, there is the symbolism of the Fall....

The vocal parts on the rest of the album are performed by: Rostén, Aspa and M.

Im usually very fast with my judgement of records in general, let it be Motörhead or a one man BM project from Bumfucklandia, but it always took several attempts to "get a grasp" on a DSO album. That doesn't mean that I fully understand every song nor the lyrics. This video helps a lot, thank you very much for that.
Bumfucklandia is a great place to visit { if you are loose that way} But back to the music I lovev some of their albums . Paraclettus makes my short hair prickle and thats good. As for GeOrge Bataille That idiiot is a fuckknuckler! The eye is an exercise in narcisssitic sado sexual fucked upness! Id rather watch that MOD dickhead than read Bataille. Deathspell Omega is absolutltk profound and excellent to listen too.
Batailles and Nietzsche are obvious influences, but I also get a lot of Hegel in their lyrical content. I get the idea that Satan is supposed to be absolute subjectivity, and "the fall" is a fall into subjectivity, as knowing one's own fundamental nothingness, experienced as temporal distance from being, the absolute, God, or whatever. And the "vertiginous movement towards the void," like in Bread of Bitterness, reminds me of what is referred to in skeptic traditions as "epoche," or the suspense of judgment, after reason in pursuit of knowledge upon the flagship of doubtfulness has destroyed itself, leaving only a confused, self-contradictory flailing of the human intellect. Very Hegelian.
Underrated comment. They very much follow the theme of Hegel’s “course of history”. You can follow all the way from their first albums being theistic in nature, eventually and inevitably moving towards nihilism and post modern thought. From faith to fall to “Verstand”.
I’m black guy who still enjoys DsO. I figured that they simply have (sorry to say) amateurish philosophical ideas. These ideas, though, drive their artistic vision and overall approach to how they create music. There’s a tension of Good and Evil in the music. This tension creates extreme volatility between the person with whom they disagree and themselves; an atmosphere of hatred that manifests through the music. I believe they intentionally choose horrible people as singers and mute them with their own words. And this affront of individual autonomy and ideological beliefs, creates the hatred needed to make a good black metal record. But yeah, I agree with you-their approach is very Hegelian (his dialectics), especially this tension I mentioned earlier. Anyway, that’s my take. I could be wrong. But that’s kinda what I got from their interview.
Yeah, there's a lot more to the band - philosophically speaking - other than Batailles and Nietzsche. They even included this Hegel quote: "Death is the most terrible thing; And to maintain its works is what requires the greatest strength" in DA EP.
Great comment. I'm not very familiar with this band, but the ever rapidly developing synthesis of centralized communism and corporate capitalism of our era is very Hegelian indeed.
Leon Bloy and Baudelaire figure very heavily into the lyrics for Paracletus.
Great video Wyatt. Two thoughts to add.
1: You should have definitely at least mentioned the EPs they have released. Kenose, Diabolus Asconditus, Chaining the Katechon, absolute masterpieces and because of their short time length for me they were easier to dive into.
2: The long defeat was a grower for me. I was a bit iffy about it at my first listen because of the great change of style but the key is to not compare it to their previous albums. It is a stylistic change for the band both musically and lyrically and it can be compared only with the albums the band is going to release (hopefully). But yeah i would agree that "the long defeat" should not be anyone's first dso album to check.
I al not sure if i smoked too much but i got an idea that long defeat is like new king want to kill old king, and all music goes into that direction, and in the end when they kill him, new music style on last song and lyrics can show us that it wasnt good direction with new king (new singer is new king)

I think you you did an excellent job of giving an overview of a very challenging and sometimes recondite band. I'd have liked to hear more about the mysterious nature of their lineup and the clear influences of post rock on the Trilogy.
Trying to create the maelstrom of man & evil in musical form is always difficult, especially with just guitars, bass, drums & vocals Deathspell Omega get remarkably close.
Please remember they're older now hence one of reasons for the overall pace of The Long Defeat!
I wouldn't be surprised that if they ever perform live it will be because they are splitting up. A farewell/thank you tour for the fans.

"Si monumentum" has always been my favourite. Even though I can recognise "Paracletus" is FAR more precise, showing superior craft and maturity. There's something about the combination of the straight forward BM approach with progressive elements that strikes just right before they went dissonance bonkers
I guess with the lyrics it's up to the listener. I think you can go as far into it as you want if you're willing to read around DsO's philosophical interests and influences. I don't believe it's something that's easily understood without that background even if you're the biggest genius.
I've had a hard time getting into Si Monumentum, but I keep going back to it now and again. my personal favorite is Fas Ite
Fantastic discussion. FAS has always been my favorite DSO album and easily the darkest, densest and heaviest peice of music I've heard.
The first 2 records are very different. I still like them, and not just in a "Listening to understand where they came from then never again" way. They are more 1st wavey, blackened thrash, but to me, even then, you can hear some early themes which point to later works. It's almost like 2 different bands, but just because I like one doesn't mean I hate the other. I still prefer their work after, but I don't HATE the early records. Furnaces of Palingenesia is a masterpiece, and a record that requires your full, undivided attention, with the lights off...
Si Monumentum and Drought are surely my favourites atmosphere wise. Great video of THE BAND.

Deathspell Omega was very influenced by Satyricon's "Rebel Extravaganza" - chaotic and trippy kind of way sound/riff-wise. First thought that came to my mind when listening to DsO back in 2005.

I'm still quite partial to the first two DSO records they did with Shaxul. His vocals are just so much fun and I tend to like all of the projects he is involved in. From the modern, Aspa era DSO, I don't particularly love anything. Drought EP probably being the one I enjoy the most. I just find DSO fan projects like Serpent Column more enjoyable generally. Or Dissonant sound in Death Metal, over Black Metal.

As a philosphy student i can confirm that deathspell omega's lyrics aren't everyday black metal satanist lyrics but pretentious. It's clear that his guys know what they're talking about and really make an innovative philosophy, i personally think theistic satanism is often very philosophically poor and too centred around mysticism occultism (and maybe i need research but i have never come cross the term "metaphysical satanism" until i found out about this guys)
I'm getting into LaVeyan (atheistic) Satanism and I feel like it's the less risqué of the two sects of it anyway. The symbols associated with both are cool, though!

They're saying that DSO's themes are not just typical BM satanism that's pretentious, they're more substantive and deep than that.

Well, it's really hard *NOT* to be pretentious when talking about Deathspell Omega, especially when referring to Paracletus, Kenose, Furnaces, etc. Since 2004, they have always been a "highbrow" sort of black metal band.
What I very much appreciate with DsO is that, by not doing any live shows, they effectively want their listeners to really delve deep into their lyrics and to glean their own special meanings from each of their masterworks. They are not a band that you casually throw on just for background noise; no, Deathspell is a band that is made to be listened intently and to be appreciated through days, months or even several years of re-listens. Even if a post-2004 album of theirs doesn't click for you at first, KEEP. LISTENING. because eventually you'll find motifs in the music that'll make you go, "Ah-HA! That's really clever."
This is why I'm planning to really form a listening relationship with The Long Defeat over the next several years of my life despite it initially being one of my most disappointing albums of 2022, because there is always something more to their music and lyrics than at first glance.
Also, The Furnaces of Palingenesia is currently my favourite DsO album! What a way to elucidate upon the pitfalls of humankind and their willingness to believe anything shoved down their throats... Sonic Vortex's video really made me appreciate the album a lot more.
Whenever I go to listen to something that isn’t DsO I just get a guilty feeling like I could be listening to DsO and am not. Then I enjoy whatever else I’m listening to just a little less. And ultimately end up just switching to DsO cuz they’re just better.

I am literally stuck there right with you, no end in sight for me. I keep trying out bands that are considered their influences, and I’ve tried listening to bands whom are their contemporaries, but none of it feels as satisfying. Their music has a unique spirituality.

One thing I always wonder about is how DSO became so intellectual. In their 2000 northern heritage interview they sound incredibly edgy and try hard just like euronymous but in their later interviews they seem like very intelligent and they are extremely well spoken. Like how? What did they experience and read?

Their 2000 interview was answered by their original vocalist as far as I understand, from 2003 all their interviews have been answered by the guitar player

Also I remember a journalist who met Christian referred to him as looking like a middle aged European businessman, so I'm guessing they are after substance more than style as they are maturing.

What do you expect from a band? Out-of-this-world song-writing and musicianship, phenomenal performances of musical instruments (drum, bass, guitar) and vocals; deep and complex lyrical contents about various philosophical, metaphysical and theological aspects of human existence that force you to really think and learn much much more and think again. I challenge people to name just one other band in the entire music history that matches this level of intellect and excellence. This is not just some random fanboy-type statement and I understand that music is subjective but there is certainly a meaningful question to ask for the comparison between Richard Wagner and some random pop star when it comes to music; I am really looking for some names that match with the towering place of DSO in music not just Black Metal ...
Of course their approach toward Orthodox Satanism and their lyrics, that can be considered as the manifesto of Metaphysical Satanism, might not be everyone's cup of tea. But for me, this is the only reason Black Metal exists. If Black Metal is not about Satan, understood broadly and transcendentally not as a creature with horns or garbage like that, and The Concept of Evil and its central place in our human life, it is not Black Metal anyway no matter how extreme or infernal or second-wavysh the music is. Apparently, this is not the way most of the people want Black Metal to be; they want it to be just plain and simple with some harsh vocals, lyrics about fantasy worlds, and cringe meaningless "Hail Satan" slogan, in other words, a genre among others. Black Metal must be complex, difficult and troublesome, without which it is just a music as any other genre, and the paragon example of this type of Black Metal is Deathspell Omega. I can write and talk about them for hours and days and months without being bored but a comment section is not the place.
Also, I never understood how people could even compare bands like Krallice, Mgła, Batushka, Imperial Triumphant, Altar Of Plagues et al to Deathspell Omega! First of all the whole reason for the existence of most of these bands is Deathspell Omega and the type of Black Metal they introduced. And secondly, Deathspell Omega is in its own league and none of these bands are even remotely comparable to the level of excellence Deathspell Omega presents.
And finally, I must add that without Mikko's outstanding vocal performances, Deathspell Omega were not the same legends they are. Mikko is an essential part of Deathspell Omega. His absence in most of the songs of the recent album shows his essential role in the band and how detrimental it could be to remove him from the band. Deathspell Omega must not succumb to the masses otherwise they would lose the unique place they have. If we have to care about the masses, why should we listen to Black Metal at all? Those who wish to listen to politically-correct music, they must look for it somewhere else, not in Black Metal and especially not in Deathspell Omega.
Everything with Mikko is gold. I could care less about his edgy politics.
C'mon, man Sigh was right there in the early 2000's coming strong from the 90's releasing progressive, challenging and musically varied stuff like Imaginary Sonicescape and Gallows Gallery.
Is Sigh experimental/avant-garde? Yes definitely.
However is it in the same technical and dissonant way that DsO is ? As a fan of both bands, I'de argue that not, Sigh is more experimental in the way they mix all kind of influences and instruments while DsO is more experimental in the way they compose riffs. Otherwise if we're talking about experimental black metal bands more broadly, in the 2000's besides Sigh and DsO there were plenty more, like Dødheimsgard, Solefald, Arcturus, Master's Hammer and so on.

Sigh at that point wasn’t doing anything in the vain of technicality or dissonance. Believe me I enjoy Sigh and agree they’re one of a kind but DSO’s approach is different and more influential.
There’s also this band , but idk if they count. I only listened to Nouveau Gloaming (which by the way has an emo-as-fuck album cover)

I think Synarchy is heavier than Drought by a substantial margin. Also, I don't get how it doesn't stand out. It's pure angry obliteration. And I would call Furnaces one of their most melodic.
to me paracletus is in short all about satan as the true comforting spirit to mankind and all who seek him, and not the supposed christian holy spirit that the bible would have you believe. this theory is backed by the highly emotive nature of the album in comparison to other deathspell omega albums, more over on standout track "phosphene" (be my child! be my promise!) it has a very strong feverish religious ecstatic feeling to me.

I recall the afternoon when I realized what they are about. It was the Fas that did it for me.
The repellent scars of abandon and election just left me totally speechless and it all felt like falling down a religous/mytholigical spiral and getting increasingly more and more demented and insane. I remember just laughing in disbelief that something like this exists 😃

You always seem to kinda overlook kenose and I'm not sure why. In my opinion it's one of there very best, top 3 without a doubt. Do you just not like it or is it because it's an EP?

Vincent is an open minded, intelligent dude and clearly well versed in theology and the Bible which makes the vids a must watch, imo.

My biggest thing about the whole debate regarding fascist characters in the outfit is that there actually should not be a question regarding those things, people in the band are detestable fascists, people in the band are insufferable leftists, people in the band have no opinions on anything and have nothing important to contribute except musically. The reason why i still continue to listen to this band is because of the sheer objectiveness of the art despite the glaring contrast in the forces that are actually at play. As they have mentioned, determinism has never been the end goal for the project, and is the wrong way to interpret the themes of the project. It is also asking the wrong questions as to whether or not anybody or anything involved in the project is okay or not okay. Bataille's position on art for example is clear in interviews and his works. Art, and especially new art, is inherently an evil trait in a person who interacts with any medium relating to it. It is not an argument of separating art from artist, it is quite literally that art, and the responsibility of the artist, transcends those concepts. There is not just a gray area in that statement, but, as campy as this will sound, a gaping void that only exists to those that basically eject themselves into it. And even just talking about the surface level apolitical perspective that anybody can see, DsO is one of the only groups that make genuine efforts to add something not only important, but new to the conversation of those who are constantly in violence with all sides, which is universally an evil position to take. DsO is unapologetically anti life to the core for reasons that I still continue to wrestle with personally, because that shit in a lot of ways is built meticulously with irrefutable evidence, and something I have to continue to absorb, even after years of listening to them. Utterly despicable, and yet it nags because more people in music should confront the themes that they present.

Metaphysical just means that which exist beyond the physical. Therefore, they viewed Satan as an actual supernatural being as opposed to atheistic satanist who uses the term "satan" as a general term for an "adversary" to Christianity.

DsO, ANNO, Véhémence and Hegemon are peak French BM with many others that deserve more respect and recognition.
Can't leave out S.V.E.S.T. and Antaeus when talking about French black metal. Peste Noire also deserves a mention for being so unique.

Oh, Gorguts is definitely an influence on DSO and Luc Lemay and Hasjarl are friends. I believe DSO mentioned Gorguts in their Bardo Methodology interview but could be misremembering.
@@mandu6665 They did, stating Obscura was one of the albums they constantly referred back to when working on Synarchy.
If I’m not mistaken, they didn’t discover Gorguts until afterwards. They took their dissonance from modern classical music (and maybe jazz), rather than other metal bands.
