  • I unbox and set up the belt sander and disc sander BDS 250 by Record Power. I show you the components of the machine and how to put them together to get going. This belt sander/disc sander combination is very sturdy and powerful, its build quality is very good, all the major parts are made of metal (cast iron mostly). I ran into an issue with the work table but I show you in the video how I solved that.
    Thanks to Maschinenhandel Meyer for providing me with this machine.

    Hi Andreas, following our discussion I decided today after work to drive to my tool centre and I opted for the Record Power DS300 Disc Sander, the belt option would have been nice but to be perfectly honest I really only need the Disc sanding section, the DS300 is very well built and heavy, and it offers 12inchs of sanding surface so my friend i want to thank you again for all your help and valuable advice, regards Louie from Northern Ireland Ulster Workshop

    Hello Andreas! Thanks for making this video. I found it both interesting and informative. A great introduction and initial review. A greatr guide to setting the sander up. I would be very interested to learn your current view of the machine. Has it lived up to your expectations? What do you know consider to be its pros and cons? Any further information would be appreciated as currently this machine is at the top of my purchasing list.

      Hi - I still really like this sander. It has held up extremely well and is very robust. Still use it very regularly and can’t complain. The only thing is dust collection but that - from what I know of other sanders - is a problem of this type of machine, not of this particular model.

    • @holzhandwerk_ak

      I found that the when adjusting the the traction the machine has some lag - so you adjust the screw very slightly and then have to wait for a couple of seconds to see the result. If you turn too much too quickly, you have a hard time getting it correct.

    Hi Andi, just watched your unboxing vid as I'm considering buying this same Record Power machine. Got to 8mins. 45 secs. and noticed the sanding direction of the belt. It has to be wrong, for two reasons. Firstly, sanding away from the fence makes the fence redundant, and secondly, the dust extraction is useless as its under the fence and all the dust is being taken away by the belt into the surrounding air. Please comment. Thanks 👍

    • @holzhandwerk_ak
      @holzhandwerk_ak  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, I can see what you mean - it sure LOOKS like the belt runs in the wrong direction. That’s not the case, however, must be an artefact of the camera shutter speed and rotation of the belt. So: the belt runs counter-clockwise and pushes the workpiece against the fence.

    • @robertw.1499
      @robertw.1499 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just looked again, very carefully this time. There is a piece where you’re sanding a piece on the belt and, in this case, it does seem to be rotating towards the fence 👍

    Hello Andreas! Thank you for your video and review. I recently added this tool to my workshop. I started using it a few weeks ago and I am quite satisfied about how it works. The only thing difficult for me about this machine is deciding the final height of the machine. I didn't buy the cast iron base and constructed a wooden one. I made a base Wich situates the belt sander to a height of 85 cm (when horizontal) which is very comfortable for both horizontal and vertical positions. The problem is that the disc sander then is so low that I have to sit in a stool to work on it. If I try to rise the base and I get the disc sander to a comfortable height, then the belt sander is really high and difficult to work. What is your experience with this tool after 2 years of working? Did you find a height that works for you?. Thanks in advance!

    • @holzhandwerk_ak
      @holzhandwerk_ak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi José. My sander sits on a surface that is about 85 cm high, which is too high (I’ve yet to make a proper cabinet on that side of the shop). But since I don’t usually use the sander for a long time, it’s ok to have the belt sander way up high and the disc sander at a comfortable height. You might try a base that’s about 70 cm, so the disc will be at about normal workbench height and the belt could still be comfortable - even though the details depend you how tall you are (I’m 180 cm). Good luck.

    • @josemanuelnavarro6637

      @@holzhandwerk_ak hi Andreas, I mean the little flat steel plate that acts as a support table for the belt, the HEAVY cast iron table in front of the disc looks plenty strong but my worry is the little green stern plate support table fixed in front of the belt, is it strong, does it flex and does it stay true, thank u mare regards Louie from Northern Ireland Ulster Workshop

    • @holzhandwerk_ak
      @holzhandwerk_ak  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see what you mean. It is sturdy, but it moves a little (doesn’t bend but wiggles in its fixation). I think it’s not meant to stay at exactly 90 degrees. If you want to sand something to 90 degrees, you’d use the disc. This little plate is just a stop for pieces pushed down on the belt so that they don’t eject to the left. For that it’s definitely strong enough.

    Hi again Andi, thanks for the vid and info. This is quite a substantial machine and currently retails on Amazon.de for nearly €500,-! This vid is from August last year. Hopefully you have had the opportunity to put it through it's paces since then. Would be good to get some in-depth feedback from you as I'm planning to invest in such a machine soon. Thanks buddy 🤘

    • @holzhandwerk_ak
      @holzhandwerk_ak  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, I've used the machine extensively and couldn’t find any serious issues. There’s just one thing that I’d add: the metal disc doesn’t have a velcro layer attached to it so the sanding discs are stuck on with a glue layer. I'd get a velcro disc (already got one for myself) and velcro sanding discs for easier change of discs. Otherwise I can recommend it. There’s a smaller version, too, if you find the price too high (BDS 150).

    You could have threaded the holes, cast iron threads like plastic.
    The device seems robust for woodworking perhaps OK. How loose is the angle guide on the table, does not seem to be exact fit.
    At least the table is held by 2 screws on either side.

    • @holzhandwerk_ak
      @holzhandwerk_ak  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At that time, I didn’t have a tap. I got a set of taps by now an will thread the holes at some point.
      The angle guide has very little play - it seems fine. But for a perfect angle, I wouldn’t use a sander.

    • @juliusvalentinas
      @juliusvalentinas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why, the Sorby ProEdge is designed to do just that, sharpen tools at a perfect angle. Your sander is way more heavy and solid, but as they say it's better to have straight aluminum, then chinese quality steel tooling.
