Sages, yarrow, lemon balm, comfrey and oregano grow easily from seed. Seeds are often less intimidating for folks. If there is no group to join, start one! I started a seed and plant swap via my library. Left over seed is stored in a cardboard box year-round near the check out desk at the library. Seed packs are dated and the donor is listed (or anonymous) so that questions can be asked of them.
It's great to share and support others in the community. I haven't bought peas to grow for ages. Just keep a few pods back and replant, so many swiss chard popping up, brassicas and kale. Yes my garden is totally untidy but all these new free plants. Though the brassicas will be lucky dip =-) as not sure what they are. My mum used to say that if she didn't grow plants and trees from cuttings and seeds, she wouldn't have been able to afford to have a garden. She grew many peach, plum, apricot and nectarine trees from seed, and harvested great quantities every year. Not as spectacular as the named varieties, but wonderful just the same.
My garden was pretty expensive 😂 but I wanted different varieties of the different species that need a pollinating partner or pruduce WAY better if they have one. I have also killed quite some plants 😶 But I keep trying (and succeeding) to propagate plants. Currants, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries are almost too easy, which is awesome, because I'm a berryholic 🤣🤣🤣 And I still need more blueberries. Did you have success wiht your cuttings? Mine from my first trials just rotted 😑 but will try again and also stool layering. I broke of a branch of my hardy kiwis and tuck that in a pot and it rooted - new plant, yay! I keep finding baby hazels under my shrubs and also other trees like oaks, birches, maples, cherries, and other stonefruits which would grow WAY to big for my little garden. But I'll try to dig them up and "release them into the wild" 🙃 I've already set some currants "free" just by sticking some prunings in the ground along some country lanes. But I had zero success seeding plums, apples and pawpaws (Asimina triloba). Mints are easy to propagate from cuttings. I also had much luck propagating asters, lavender, rosemary and phlox from cuttings - this way I could start to get more plants even when the "motherplants" where still to small divide them. Most herbacious plants are easy to propagate by division. Do you know the YT-channel "Dreams of green"? Alex has awesome propagation videos, but she seems to take a break from making new videos. Also great propagation videos on "Fraser valley rose farm". And edible acres, of course!!!

I think I’m having success with the blueberry propagation - just potted up year old cuttings that had roots - yay! We’ll see if they kick into life soon. I’ve actually started making a video that may take a year or two to publish following my success (or otherwise) of more recent blueberry cutting propagation - hopefully I’ll have a few extra plants from that experiment. Love all the plants you’re growing - it’s so exciting to get ‘free’ plants. In next weeks video I show some recently discovered asparagus seedlings - just appeared out of nowhere- I was pretty excited haha!! Good to hear from you 😊

They JUST reached a size, where they started fruting more than a few berries and I'm not sure, if I want to cut of branches, that would make even more fruit next year. Maybe better hill them for stool layering: make more plants and more berries, too - haha! Free asparagus!! 😍 I WANT THAT TOO!! 😊 My motto: Even a propagation rate of ONE is a win! Right? I find it hard to "throw away (on the compost heap)" prunings. I HAVE to stick them into the ground! But even when I "manage" to toss them as mulch, some of those strike roots. I keep propagating Josta berries that way 🤫 😂 and then I just HAVE to pot them... Must be some kind of compulsion disorder 😂🤣😂

I always hear people say that gardening is expensive, but I get so many plants for free from swaps and taking cuttings from friends or sensitively taken cuttings from other people's front yards. It needn't be very financially expensive at all. Time wise it's a different story. 🫣☺️

Linda, as I begin to add edibles to my gardens, regarding compost paths; the only plants available to me right now are weeds. Can I go ahead and put them in the path and then add manure and wood chips? Would it be a complete disaster or just a bit more work.
Hi Cheryl you can certainly add in weeds. Probably best to avoid those with seeds on them. Also I’d be careful with using plants with a vigorous root system - avoid adding in the roots if there is a chance they can take off again - like creeping buttercup (I know from experience). In my next video I talk about adding in greens from a far such a cut grass - anything really to increase the amount of organic material you have (green that readily breaks down). Good luck

One year I raked up the olives that had fallen off our giant trees and piled them up as mulch around some orange trees and ended up pulling out olive seedlings for the next 3 years 😂
