It's taken a long time to twig that the problem with fibre glass that thereis no give with expansion and contraction with the old felt flat roof system the first layer was nailed for that very reason the problem in the building trade is some products are not tested enough that's the simple fact
I like EPDM as a permanent roof where I can use it. I do like the look of this though as here in the UK Wet GRP is all the rage but our weather fluctuates so much, sometimes from hot, cold, windy and rainy and back to hot all in a 12 hour period I often wonder how long they actually last before cracking.
I just smile when I hear of 20 years warranty. I replaced a rubber roof just 2 years old. the lady said it had a 20 year warranty but the contractors had gone out of business. Where have I heard that before.
If you do the wet roof right then it can be good but often the expansion and contraction on the OSB 3 leads to lifting joints and the GRP cracks. It should be at least twice the thcikness that most people lay it at. In other words roll out the mat and then put another layer on across it.
You make a good point and I also made it at the time of my visit. The material is deemed to have a low hazard rating but there is no such thing as good dust so I did wear a mask.
@@SkillBuilder The last decking layer must not be on the insulation. The waterproof covering must be straight on top of the insulation. The building regs will not pass it if constructed this way.
Mr Bisby I need some advice on what roof to have on my loft conversion. For many years I needed my garage flat roof repaired as the felt had gone, and wanted EPDM rubber roof but was struggling to find anyone that wanted to do it so in the end I went for felt. The builder I have at home at the moment quoted me for a felt roof and when I questioned it he just came out with some excuse to put me off. Is there a price difference, is it difficult to install, what is it that a lot of people try to put you off. With rubber roof you get 50 years guarantee and felt around 10 to 15 years, the one on the garage was done after the storm of I think 87 and took 20 before it started leaking. I really want to go rubber roof but how do I get it into the builders head.
Stay away from all GRP products. You get no guarantee. Single ply is the way to go. Up to 30 years guarantee from independent provider. GRP. No good for large roofs, does not like temperature change, will lift like a sail, ....good for boats not roofs.
yes like on an overhang from the main building or something ,if thats rthe case id recommend for the owner long term its best to " blend " the main building and flat roof building into a long half apex or something, would cost 3x more but will last 3x more decades ! and looks BETTER too :) but people just want a quick fix it seems :(
Trust me Andy stay away from GRP. Your guarantee is worth less that old knickers. You may as well burn your money to keep warm in the winter ❄️. Because with your roof you will need drying out cause you’ll be wetter than those knickers. 😪😪😪☔️☔️☔️💧
This is the reason I watch this channel it reads your mind, I wanted a video like this and I got one excellent.
You are right. We are reading your mind. Be very careful what you think about today

True,
Hambleside danelaw!! What an excellent name!
Much better system. I wish I knew about it a couple of years back before mine was layed down.

Not long. GRP is the worst flat roof system ever. Still the best system is a 3 layer torch SBS polyester roof. 30 year life.

The most important bit you have missed out the spitter how does that go in and how do you fix and seal it??
I helped my father install his wet GRP garage roof 17 years ago, no leaks and no maintenance. You can't beat GRP.

Looks like a great system. How much does it cost per M2 approximately?
Wow fantastic
How are you doing that with no mask on?

Hey 'skill builder'. What's the OEL of styrene?
You cannot construct a Warm roof with grp.and Part l regs demand it over a habital room.
Sorry can you tell me more. I have a warm roof and GRP. It is quite common

Do not have rubber roofing or grp. big mistake.

fuck flat roofs in total ,rather do a half apex frame and lay some tiles on
I would always go for a pitch but sometimes you just can't

Not true, Gavin, Dryseal comes with a 20 year leak free guarantee and is covered by an insured warranty .
