Deborah, I echo every word written. Over time, my affection and respect for this band only grow. Great is often overused but not for these three gents: we truly were in the presence of greatness.
Think about how ironic this band is. Their very first song 40 + years ago on their very first album was Finding my Way. The very last song on their last album was The Garden. It's like they went full circle. Brilliant ending to a brilliant beginning. It's almost feels as if this song was written for the professor. I can't listen to this song with dry eyes. They are so AMAZING. Proudly Canadian 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
This was the last song on their last album. Neil in this song talks about life and what is the most important in it. There are a number of songs where Alex plays acoustic guitar and he has used the acoustic on the stand and then switches. He had the acoustic tones built into his guitars to simplify things. Cheers
This song chokes me up every time. I cried through the entire concert in July of 2015, knowing it would be my last Rush concert. There were young kids sitting next to me that had never seen Rush live and didn't even know that much about them. They said they were blown away and vowed to do some Rush covers in their newly formed prog rock band. I was wearing an R30 baseball jersey. I took it off and handed it to them....the next generation. My life was so much richer for having grown up with RUSH.
The acoustic tone is not from any effect processors or computer, It's from his Les Paul signature that's equipped with Piezo pickups in the Floyd Rose bridge. Notice his signature Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul has 2 output jacks for one blended acoustic and electric and the other for just acoustic.
I always think of Neil when I hear this song. Even though the drums are not featured prominently in it it could be his eulogy great song to end a great career for the greatest band ever.
Rush has gone down in history with an abundance of great music ,phenomenal talent, dignity and the most loyal fans in the world!! Rush, truly unique and a whole lot of awesomeness........
This is a very emotional song for many Rush fans…almost like Neil was writing his own epitaph. Geddy’s voice was starting to deepen in the last ten years of Rush and he struggled a bit. But diehard fans like myself look past that and love the sheer emotional intensity of it all. There will never be another Rush.
The lyrics are the thing here. It’s the end of their career. It is their last written and recorded song off their last record. But again on this one it’s the lyrics. “The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect”.
The last song on their last album. A nice, understated song about reflecting back and finally understanding the meaning of life. And the fact the last album was a concept album was a special treat, a sort of acknowledgement and return to their roots. That concert was a wonderful changeup from all of their previous ones, having a full string ensemble to fill out those songs (and a couple of older songs that benefited from backup strings). The song quickly became a fan favorite.
Maybe Rush’s greatest ballad as the final song on their final album, based on Neil’s lifetime philosophy/retrospective, with just the perfect solo by Alex as per norm. Bittersweet Emotional flashpoint for most Rush fans, especially after Neil’s passing.
I'd give anything to be able to have a Rush song I've never heard before right in front of me. And what a great song. Especially poignant knowing this was likely their final album. This song is the band's Farewell to its fans.
This one is new to me too. So, 2013 would have been shortly before Neil's diagnosis? Or maybe he already knew. Possibly he wasn't up to doing as much? And I think Geddy had an album of his own out around this time, but I'm not sure about that. But by 2013 Geddy would have been hitting those high notes for more than thirty years. I noticed in later concerts he wasn't attempting to hit them any more. Better to do what you can still do well rather than attempt what you used to do and fail. So, he is singing in his lower register here.
Alex uses a Piezo in all of his guitars, at least his modern ones. Rush will always be my forever band. I first heard Tom Sawyer when I was 14, when I saw the video on MTV, back when they played music. Thirty-six years ago. They have never let me down. Their albums have defined the intervals of my own life. Immeasurable influence.
There last album is actually one if their heaviest albums. This, as others have mentioned, was the last song on the album and is very different from the other songs. While none of us knew this would be their last album, they left us with both a smashing heavy album and one of the most appropriate and beautiful final songs for any band to end their career. I know you said you’ll be going through their albums at some point. You might me surprised just how heavy Clockwork Angels is compared to earlier albums. Took me a few listens to warm up to it and now it’s one of my favorites.
I "agree" with the moderate "reaction". Out of context, it's not so great - very good at best. But the uniqueness and contrast of style, the imagery of the lyrics and the song being the last one is what makes it special, I think. Rush forever!
He used to do that. Whenever a part called for acoustic guitar. He had one on a stand. And Hell Geddy is getting older. When a man has a high pitched voice like Geddy. All those years of performing takes its toll on the voice.
Sooo agree, but it's interesting to note, that even after 40 years, Ged could still sing a song in the same key as of old. But at a lower register. He did a fine job of compensating for his changing range on the new music.
Back in the 70's the Music Emporium catalog had one of those guitar stands for an acoustic - and the copy claimed it had been invented by Alex Lifeson so that he could switch between electric & acoustic. So yeah - he knows about those. :D
This was the penultimate tour for Rush, last tour being the R40. Alex used to do the acoustic guitar on a stand, then began streamlining towards the end, I'm sure for convenience. For long time fans, this song is very emotional as the lyrical theme revolves around looking back on your life, or maybe their career. When Neil passed, this really hit home for us. I was fortunate enough to actually be present for the very last concert in Los Angeles for R40. You could feel the end coming as they structured it playing songs for most recent back to the very 1st album for three hours, including changing sets through the decades. So much to know about these guys, Justin. They were truly a master act in all respects 🤘
I was at the Forum too. Amazing end to an amazing career. It was also my 57th birthday on August 1, 2015. Best birthday gift ever. My husband and I flew out to Ca. & did the last 2 shows in style and also got to attend RUSHCON in L.A. that weekend. Partying with a couple hundred close RUSH friends. Deluxe accommodations & a hell of a 4-day party. At the end of the show, we were in tears knowing that we would never be getting together for tours again. There was a group of about 100 of us that spent the last 4 tours traveling all over the US & Canada & we’d become like family. We still are in touch and will be forever!! That’s one of my RUSH stories. My husband is my RUSH partner too. KEEP RUSHIN!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Now that you had a chance to hear the music aspect of this song, take the time when you can and really listen to the lyrics, it really puts life into perspective. "The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect So hard to earn, so easily burned The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect So hard to earn, so easily burned". WOW, love this song in a very different way. When I first heard it I was blown away since this is the last song of one heck of an album. JP glad your reacting to Rush, they really have a knack with getting people on board the Rush Train. I know you have done Headlong Flight but would love to see your reaction to the one Live during the Clockwork Angels Tour. It really is something else. Rock on brother.
He used to do the acoustic on a stand back in the 80-90’s. You don’t always see everything Alex is doing on other videos but he plays Taurus pedals with his feet while playing guitar. This video you see the extra tasks. You are right though he is still the weekest link. I feel like he could be a standout in many other bands of their peers. When you got Neil and Geddy it’s tough to standout!
There are many songs where Alex does play acoustic guitar live, he had a guitar on a stand, but by the time of Clockwork, I guess he felt like acoustic emulators worked well enough to go with them on stage.
You made the comment "Looping?" Likely. Alex did seem to use sample and hold/loops at different places in live settings. The foot pedals that he and Geddy (as well as Neil in places in his kit) used triggers for elements in songs.
This guitar has a Floyd Rose type bridge with a piezo (pee-ay-zo, it's from greek) pickup per string and two output jacks to route magnetic and piezo pickups - Alex has two wireless units on his strap. It is pretty much a "solid acoustic" with a pre-amp. The major advantage over the acoustic Ovation (and other) guitars he used is the control of feedback in a live setting.
You know, how many people can say they spent 45 years of their lives going to the same job day after day. Gave up most of their lives giving their time performing for us!
Acoustic AND electric? Work smarter, not harder! Lol! This is the last song on the last album. I’ve always seen it as a farewell tribute to the fans, and it’s a song that reflects on all they accomplished in 40 years. I tear up every time I hear it. Oh, and Geddy is just getting older…if I can do anything half as well as these guys when I’m in my 60’s, well, that’s a damn good life I had. 😁
The "Alex Leifson" model Gibson Les Paul has separate piezo and magnetic pickup output. It has the standard Les Paul magnetic pickups and GraphTech piezo saddles. That's not a "simulator."
I think Geddy's voice really started to age on this tour. Musically, they were better than ever to the end, except Geddy seemed to struggle, imo. Try something off of the Counterparts album. Animate, Stick it Out or Cut to the Chase are good ones :)
I don't disagree, you saying that Geddy's voice capability was somewhat less by this time. I would say, though, that his vocal capability peak was 2112, AFtK and Hemispheres. Hard attacks on high notes with amazing vibrato. Starting around Permanent Waves, the vocals were no longer as challenging. I LOVE PW, just observing a difference in the level of vocal difficulty. I suspect that the change was at least partially that he was not quite as comfortable in his high range as he once was.
Agreed on this but meaning no disrespect to Geddy. I'd like to see this video dubbed with the studio recording....because the visuals here are amazing. I saw them on this tour and many others since 1981, to include one of their final shows (Portland, OR).
That was cool! That was the final track of the final album for RUSH. Written, of course, by Neil Peart. The song really takes on a special significance in light of Neil's passing in 2020. Oh, and to watch Alex on the acoustic guitar stand, check out "Broon's Bane" intro to "The Trees" from the Exit Stage Left" live performance! Thanks JP. ☮
Ever since Metallica worked with an orchestra I dreamed about Rush working with one and although it was just strings it did not disappoint. The perfect swan song, the last song on the last album. It was a love letter to the fans.
You'd love losing it from the signals album, has beautiful string work in it also, I recommend the lyric video, great tune with a awesome lyrics, check it out, BAM!
FYI, the stand the acoustic guitar sits on was invented by Alex Lifeson. Watch the Trees or early Closer to the heart and you'll see Alex play acoustic guitar.
This was Rush's swan song. A culmination of their journey. They were a very private band, but it's my belief that Neil was diagnosed with brain cancer around this time. And Geddy's voice was on the down fall. It's sad to come to the realization that what you love to do has to end, but you have to look back and see what has been accomplished, What you have planted, The success of your garden.
It's the acoustic on a stand like you said. And it's the guitar holder he invented. This was the last song on their last studio album before Neil got sick. Very haunting considering
As an interesting note. The guitar stand you were talking about is something Alex has used numerous times in the past. But not for songs that require so much shifting. Just for songs that begin with an acoustic bit. Another thing that I find cool is the stand is called The Omega Stand and it was actually invented and patented by Alex.
In memory of Neils daughter who passed in in a car accident and Neils wife who passed shortly after from Cancer, And then Neil who passed from Brain Cancer ❤
This song was the band's "swan song". It was the last track on the last album they ever recorded. The real power of the song comes from the deep, meaningful lyrics (punctuated by the haunting strings). The Rush fans who were pressing you to react to this somehow failed to mention that you need to follow the lyrics and that it's a "goodbye" of sorts, made even more poignant after Neil Peart's passing a few years ago.
I can't help but wonder now, when listening to this song's lyrics, whether Neil already knew about the cancer that would kill him 8 years later. Saw them for my last time on the Clockwork Angels tour, they used the backing strings for several tunes, was really good.
He didn't have cancer at this point. I read an article where his widow spoke about how Neil used to finish the notoriously difficult Sunday edition of the NY Times Cross Word Puzzle with no problem. Then one day, he was struggling with it, and was struggling somewhat with his speech. At this point they went to the doctor and he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. This was about a year into his retirement. Clockwork Angels was released in 2012. Glioblastoma is quite aggressive. If Neil had it when they wrote and recorded Clockwork Angels, he would have passed away probably before the R40 tour.
Grddy’s voice? he was 60! Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece…, even my wife loved it because of the string section. Alex uses guitars with Piezo pickups to get an acoustic sound, a little pricey, but not ridiculous.
As others said it is the last song on their last album, Clockwork Angels, themed on a 'steam punk' style story Neil developed, this is the ending of the story. However, the album is one of their most aggressive rock sounds in their catalog. Headlong Flight, Caravan, BU2B, Canaries are highlights of that sound. You'll get around to it. It impressive. I prefer it's predecessor, Snakes and Arrows which I think is one of their top 3, 4. Good stuff, again.
19 studio albums....over 40 million sold and counting....countless sold out concerts spanning a 4 decade career. This is the last song on their last album and one of their best ever. Name me one other band that has achieved this. You can't so don't bother trying. RUSH has set the bar for what all other studio and live bands dream of becoming. RUSH is quite simply the greatest band to ever exist and nothing I have heard or seen is even coming close.
Once again I need to chime in as a 52 year old bass player and fellow pro musician and HUGE Rush fan who has seen them perform over a dozen times through 4 decades...this tour, the one preceding it and the final one were all terrible (aside from the instrumentals). Geddys voice (which was bad in the beginning. Got MUCH better in the middle and went straight down the toilet at the end) had fell off of a cliff here...but for some reason Rush fans love this more recent live shit. I get it it. This was their farewell song on their farewell album...you really should check out album versions first brother. Especially for the bass lines GED was laying down. Great stuff! They were a great live band but Unfortunately these last few concerts were not great (mostly because of Geddys voice) and for some reason, most fans don't hear it that way.Songs like Big Money, or The Analog Kid have ICONIC bass lines but they are just not as good on these last few tours and unfortunately, If you didn't see them play back "in the day" there are few, if any examples besides these later, sub par, 3 tours. Aside from the 1 finger "metronome" style of his right hand...believe it or not, in the 80s Geddy used to play a lot more "Jaco style" with two fingers close to the bridge (when he wasn't singing). They even opened with "teen town" once in the early 90s.. The bass parts on those albums are sick and the interplay with Peart on drums is exceptional.Of course...Im a bass player..so what do I know. Hardly ever got laid. My only electric guitar is a Tele.
The studio version is better IMHO, and would have been a better first listen. Basically the song gave you a sense of the direction Rush may have been heading in. Again my opinion. But listen to the studio version if you haven’t already it’s just beautiful
"The Garden" is the final cut off the final album, 'Clockwork Angels' released in 2012, which is also a concept album. Idk about anyone else, but every time I hear this song, the tears start flowing. I've followed this band since 1975, around the release of 'Caress of Steel.' Just knowing it is the last set of poetic lyrics from Neil Peart brings bittersweet sadness to the finality of Rush. Yes, their music lives on through the various mediums, but to know we'll never again get to get tickets for a concert or wait for the next album release sucks. Yeah, yeah...Geddy's voice aged horribly. Let's hear any of you sing (and scream) in the high register he did without doing irreparable damage to your vocal cords. I saw Rush twice on the CA tour and I appreciated them.

For the guitar, look up Gibson Axxess Les Paul. Piezo pickup system...gives an acoustic tone
The last song on the last album of their career. Brilliant ending to a lifetime of greatness. Miss them still.
And you always will.… 🎸🌹

Beautifully written, Julie. Rush have hugely enriched my life too, as well as countless others too. A truly legendary band.

“The measure of a life, is a measure of love and respect, so hard to earn so easily burned.” R.I.P. Neil, your garden has been well tended.😢👍
Well said, Jim! This was like Neil’s goodbye to us and he was telling us what’s really important in life and how you live it! God bless!!

My favorite Rush song hands down! Beautiful song with an amazing message, your wife will love it tell her to listen to it.
Geddy, felt Neil's lyrics while singing.Which, explains the emotion contained within the most beautiful lyrics ever written.💙

Goose bumps every time I hear that solo.
A masterpiece
The last song from their last album
You can tell Geddy’s voice has aged but this was so beautiful and they went out with class and this album is a masterpiece.
Always brings a tear to my eyes hearing this. Last track, last album. Thinking of Neil. RIP

Geddy just got older - like we all do.
I remember standing a matter of feet in front of him 40 years ago and man he had a powerful voice

I've heard Alex refer to a "piezo" pickup when talking about that acoustic sound.

Yes! I vote for Stick It Out. Awesome song 🎵 🤘
Stick it Out is a banger!
OMG, Counterparts is so underrated. Between Sun and Moon is amazing.

2013 . That was about it for them. Anyone know exactly when their last show was and where? This was close I believe
Watch "Time stands Still" documentary..2015, Los Angeles, CA (Forum). Was their final performance LIVE.
@@carlbwalnjr6922 I think I saw the last song in a video. Geddy was emotional. Kinda rare for him
Alex has a piezo pickup under the bridge which kind of emulates an acoustic guitar

Geddy’s voice is of 65 year old guy🤷🏻♂️

@@Tonyr0206 thanks for the info. His lyrics here seem to foreshadow his death
The last song from Rush. R.I.P Neil Peart!!
Track rips me up inside.
Grddy’s voice? he was 60! Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece…, even my wife loved it because of the string section.
Alex uses guitars with Piezo pickups to get an acoustic sound, a little pricey, but not ridiculous.
Its all foot pedals when it comes to Alex realy cool 😎
this song was played at my mothers wake
🎸🥁🎸
As others said it is the last song on their last album, Clockwork Angels, themed on a 'steam punk' style story Neil developed, this is the ending of the story.
However, the album is one of their most aggressive rock sounds in their catalog. Headlong Flight, Caravan, BU2B, Canaries are highlights of that sound.
You'll get around to it. It impressive.
I prefer it's predecessor, Snakes and Arrows which I think is one of their top 3, 4.
Good stuff, again.
🎼🐐🐐🐐🎶 🎙
19 studio albums....over 40 million sold and counting....countless sold out concerts spanning a 4 decade career. This is the last song on their last album and one of their best ever. Name me one other band that has achieved this. You can't so don't bother trying. RUSH has set the bar for what all other studio and live bands dream of becoming. RUSH is quite simply the greatest band to ever exist and nothing I have heard or seen is even coming close.
You are right on those crazy acoustic simulators, you missed the point of it being Rushs' swam song!
Great reaction . I have played acustic live about a million times. When you plug one in electric. It dose not sound acustic.
This is better I think.
The studio version is so much more powerful!
