So in short, the fact that this song was able to make me feel sad and nostalgic without understanding/reading the lyrics is proof of the artistical genius of Takeuchi? Well, not gonna disagree with that.
Same for me. I was born in 2001 and, don't get me wrong, I love the 2000s era, but 80s and 90s seem so cool and a bit more simple (well, maybe not in Romania, because of communism). Nowadays, most people don't get out or, if they do, they stare into their phones. If I could live in the 80s for one day, I would.
warmecanic I never say reggae/reggaeton was bad but despacito was completely overrated compared to this song.. back then our parents really have a good taste in music (unless if you grew up in 80s)
having a Japanese mother I grew up listening to lots of Takeuchi Mariya's CDs in the car as a child. It's great that she's getting so much attention now online/in the West 😝makes me proud to be Japanese~
c you can thank youtube for that. That song kept on popping in my recommended list for half a year now. Although i have to agree that the song is really damn good.
damn, thinking about it makes me jealous. my parents don't really like music much (except my dad, he likes rock) so i didn't have a lot to go with back then. glad i found this wonderful genre.
I like the point about how TH-cam makes it seem like you're discovering a hidden gem. Everyone's got that little bit of hipster in them which YT milks for all it's worth.
Most of the music I discover (and like enough to go back to) on TH-cam is from people suggesting it through their comments on TH-cam, or replies on Reddit, or messages on Discord, etc. rather than the recommendations bar.
Not bad ways to find music. When I was younger I used a lot of music rating websites like RYM (looking through weird genre to see what were the hip releases), music critics and whatever my friends were into at the time. However at least when it comes to TH-cam nowadays we would both be in the minority.
Growing up in the US as a Japanese-American, my pa and ma blasted music by her and many others. My father in fact was and is still a major fan of her so we always heard this in the car driving around town. My family is wholeheartedly surprised and are genuinely happy to hear that such a song and singer is gaining popularity here as well :) I recently got into City Pop but I'm so happy that such genre of songs are coming back. Arigatou everyone~ love from Tokyo
Half-Japanese here, and I remember growing up in the 80s in the U.S. and remember seeing that love/hate with Japan at the time, but feeling like...vindication? Like I love being American, but seeing how crazy people went for Transformers (remember getting them as Diaclone), Nintendo, and Robotech, the negativity didn't feel like it hit that deep. I had been in Japan at peak City Pop, and I just kept saying to myself, "guys, you don't even know the fuckin' half of it, you would shit yourself."(American Transformers fans in the late 80s got fuckin' *robbed* when they didn't bring out the Japanese exclusives out to the U.S.). Now 35 years later, and here's the sounds of my experiences then coming back in a huge way. Fucking crazy. I have vague memories of just about every commercial having a City Pop soundtrack, like car commercials, or Sony, and my reactions to it then created a yearning or nostalgia (if that can be said for 6, 7, 8 year old to have). I love seeing people having the same reactions to it *now* is awesome.
Check it. citypop is not a genre. It is the name given by Japanese radio DJ at the time. Plastic love is based on this song. (We Go - Minnie Riperton) The song configuration is the same. Citypop is a copy of Elevator Music. (ex. I Remember Yesterday Donna Summer ) MIki Matsubara - Stay with me. (1980) Carole Bayer Sager - It's The Falling In Love (1978) Exactly the same.
>at friends house >check his itunes playlist >literally only one song >Mariya Takeuchi 竹内 まりや Plastic Love >almost 300,000 plays 15million views now lol
"Plastic Love" is one of those songs that brings back memories that never happened, as if you were living someone else's past, it's a wierd feeling I love and that I get to experience with ElectroSwing too
Man, that's really weird, to think that an obscure song and an even more obscure genre I've loved with a fiery passion for so long, to now become to popular, to the point where it may even become mainstream. Honestly never would have guessed. Great video, this is the first from you I've seen, and City Pop continues to be my favourite genre, and Plastic Love my favourite song, as well as the song that introduced me to City Pop. Thank you Mariya Takeuchi / 竹内まりや as well as the channel "Plastic Lover". Also, I doubt many people, if any, care to read my comment, but if any fellow listeners of Van Paugam's stream are here.... Hi.
Robotnik Mania I chatted to Van , before and after the video came out I gave him a shout out because that video on the history of citypop is so underappreciated
Stevem Oh what? I was NOT expecting a response, but thank you!! I agree though, it's a really well done and informative video that more people need to see. Once again, great job on your video too :)
this is seriously an uncanny coincidence. The past month or so I've been submerging myself into city pop and funk... Got this notification while i was listening to Junko Yagami's Full Moon. Really nice commentary on Plastic Love and internet music culture in general.
This was such a well produced video!!! Exactly what we were looking for thank you :))) And the Yubin shout-out! Points to you from some BIG kpop fans :D
All I can think of is this song playing in the ending of Sailor Moon where Usagi looks up at the night sky with her friends of with her cats while her bf is doing the same but drinking whiskey or smth
The Memeist I really dig casiopea I was listening to them around the same time I found plastic love , I'm not sure if they count as city pop , jazz fusion or somewhere in between but it is a good old listen

Btw I had no idea that City Pop originated in Japan, like wtf. I've listened to City Pop songs for a long time, but now I like the genre even more. And I'm definitely gonna download Takeuchi's discography this week. Queen. Also, the fact that Plastic Love was basically THE song that brought City Pop into the spotlight (in the West at least??) is just amazing. And also I listened to the song when it first went viral and I was like "it's cool, and I love people watching a Jpop song for no reason", but totally forgot about it until tonight. And btw as you talked about Yubin, she's released more stuff, and at least one other song (that I remember) sounds a little bit like City Pop too.

6:30 That's me up in the corner lol. Before I was doing game music and other stuff I was doing vaporwave and used Plastic Love for a song I made called Another Morning Comes. I released some of my vapor work on my BandCamp awhile ago, but it's been taken down since my focus changed. But it's cool to see how something I made on a whim ended up finding it's way in here. That album art is a picture of me on vacation in San Francisco in 2006.
So cool seeing the song become so popular over the past year. I remember finding it when it barely had over 100,000 views. A while later TH-cam began recommending it to everyone, and then the video got deleted, only for Plastic Lover to upload it again, TH-cam kept recommending it, and the rest is history.
Then why TF you have a Chilean dictator (as myself) and a Spanish name in your channel yet your basic useless brain doesn't let u speak more than one language
RIP just realised that the Plastic Love video got deleted, when searching for it (again xD). Was shocked to find out it was taken down by the thumbnail's photographer, Alan Levenson. He shot it for Mariya's 1980 Miss M album, not 1984's Variety which is where Plastic Love is from. tbh it makes more sense that he did it through Norman Seeff Studio(which he was working for then)
Lol my first time listened to plastic love was at a party in some small bar. me and my friend went to a club that was playing some shitty techno. Thus we ditched the club and went bar hopping to a nearest bar. The moment we step in the bar we heard the plastic love song. Immediately we know that this a jam we have to dance to. We told the dj to play this kinda song all night long. Best night of my life
Oh hey, I remember you commented on our podcast a few months back asking about the clip of Yubin's City Woman for this documentary. Congrats on finishing the video! It really seems to be blowing up. - Andrew
Truly Daebak thanks for the help with that ! Your video at the time was the only reference I could find to an actual audio clip of city love , it was a bit of a moment for me because I had these two different pieces of info one about a Korean pop star doing citypop numbers and the other about plagerism and they turned out to be connected
First of all, great editing work! Secondly, does any of you know any other Kpop artist that use the citypop sound/samples? I know that Jazzyfact’s “하루종일” samples Anri’s Last Summer Whisper and that Wonder Girls had a lot of 80s inspired songs on REBOOT.
"Where Are You?" by CLC is very much a City Pop song th-cam.com/video/lNUP5B_NZUE/w-d-xo.html Also Baek Yerin of 15& recently did a cover of "La La La Love Song" by Toshinobu Kubota that is nothing short of excellent th-cam.com/video/JvIgqD_jUos/w-d-xo.html Gfriend's most recent single "Sunny Summer" definitely takes some City Pop/Future Funk influences with its use of horns th-cam.com/video/9iPLjmz3_U4/w-d-xo.html I definitely wish there were more K-Pop songs that took influence from City Pop and Future Funk, its easily one of my favorite music genres, but sadly that's all I've been able to find so far. - Andrew
Wasn't popular before because maybe it was beyond it's time, but you are right after listening to it which was mysteriously recommended by TH-cam, I started listening to other japanese artists of that time like Miki Matsubara and Meiko Nakahara, so Mariya Takeuchi was indeed the starting point
Ai City to me is the embodiment of that city pop aesthetic, I swear at one point had to pause it to check a musical choice because it sounded like City Pop artists I knew
yeah i can see that connection. but the overall vibe of ai city is still quite different from the aesthetic i know from city pop. what with all the hyper pulpy plot, fights and all that crazy stuff going on.
I love Mariya- I hope she makes a comeback or something.. (she’s like 63 so I doubt it though lol) Yamashita and her are both amazing! Anyways, this was a really good video! You got yourself a new subscriber!
The song at 6:32 is The Word II by Shigeo Sekito not Mac DeMarco Update: DeMarco thanked Shigeo and he did a wonderful job recreating the chords in Chamber of Reflection.
moviemagic The World? Shigeo? That kinda sounds like DIO, doesn't it? Geo=Earth DIO=God(in Italian) The World is DIO's stand. Mac DeMarco has the same type of stand confirmed.
Its weird seeing something obscure you've been into for a long time suddenly become cool. I found Takeuchi through Yamashita through Scoobie Do's cover of Rider on Time through a opening act before Soil & Pimp Sessions ages ago. Also: There's a cool cover album that covers some of Tatsuro Yamashitas music. A member of Earth, Wind, And Fire covered Windy Lady on it.
I agree finding gold and then getting it imported from japan then about 2017 people started finding future funk then BAM! Everyone knows these classics modern producers sampled! I honestly love people finding the music but also don’t like it st the same time because it ain’t a hidden gem anymore
I used to look up 80s jpop on youtube and this song and stay with me by miki matsuabara were my faves im glad that songs from years ago have a place in this generation it just shows how much things have changed and evolved
I will do everything can! I always try to subtitle the videos for those hard of hearing or non native listeners so they have a chance of getting more from it
YES, YES & YES!!! beats and music so rich. Japanese are really good at perfecting anything, music included. We love it cause it has a pieces of music we are so familiar with.
as of 2019, Plastic love videos already reached a whooping 60+ million views (culminations of some other similar videos). I think "Labyrinth" from MONDO GROSSO will be the new Plastic Love of TH-cam. It has been gaining a lot of recommended algorithm LOL
Got into this album because of Vaporwave suggestions. I just love it. The hardest thing for me is getting the lyrics lol - Junko Ohashi, Mariya Takeuchi, Miki Matsubara and Taeko Ohnuki were all YT recommendations and I just can't get enough.
This might be, hands down, the besr youtube video/documentary ever so far. Concize, brief (the good if brief twice as good (and the bad if short then not so bad)) , and immensely pleasurable. Congrats you dented history,
Terrific video. I knew you were doing this, so despite never listening to the song before (I had heard bits of it, but never cared for it enough to stick around), I decided to sit down, listen and read the lyrics (extraordinary lyrics, I must say). As someone who kinda hates city pop, I absolutely appreciate what TH-cam has done for the genre and all the other niche genres out there, and I enjoyed seeing you delve into the way TH-cam has changed the way we find music. Although clicking on Plastic Love eventually got Taeko Ohnuki into my recommended bar and I dig her, so I have Mariyah to thank for that. As for who you should do next: I know little about Nujabes, but I think he'd be more interesting than Hosoda. Simply because I think Hosoda has yet to hit his stride; all of his movies feel like they're the work of a guy that will soon, at some point, make a movie that expresses what he's going for in a flawless manner. But he's still hitting line drive singles instead of home runs. Maybe Mirai will be the one to successfully make that connection to me. It did very well at Cannes, so there may be something to it.
Phoenix I very much like taeko's work she got that album artist thing going , I appreciate how her sound has developed over the years. I'll be talking about her on the citypop follow up. I think nujabes Is the favourite right now , hosada video may annoy some people because I tend to agree he's inching towards something fully formed so far my favourite was summer wars I really liked that yet it was just an expanded version of the Digimon movie, the concept seems more suited for that world. However after that point I've not like hosada "dramatic" family side. he's moving away from the adventure template and I'm not sure if that's for the better as he gains more control in both writing , directing and producing
The first city pop song i ever listen to was telephone number by junko osahashi which came from a meme, then i discovered plastic love that was when i really start to get into city pop. Right now my top favorites are Plastic Love both by Mariya Takeuchi and Tatsuro Yamashita, Ride on Time by Tatsuro Yamshita and Stay with Me by Miki Matsubara
I am glad that im not the only one that has the perspective when it comes to the importance of the visuals of the character and the music combined. Nice video! [suscribed]

So in short, the fact that this song was able to make me feel sad and nostalgic without understanding/reading the lyrics is proof of the artistical genius of Takeuchi? Well, not gonna disagree with that.

Her music is consistently excellent. I've listened to all her albums and they are all great. Her early albums in particular are of brilliant quality.
RIP just realised that the Plastic Love video got deleted, when searching for it (again xD). Was shocked to find out it was taken down by the thumbnail's photographer, Alan Levenson. He shot it for Mariya's 1980 Miss M album, not 1984's Variety which is where Plastic Love is from. tbh it makes more sense that he did it through Norman Seeff Studio(which he was working for then)
th-cam.com/video/9Gj47G2e1Jc/w-d-xo.html
It´s actually back, and the uploader left a comment pinned that explains the situation.
Best night of my life
Wait what. I thought it was just popping up because I was watching a lot of 90s jdm drift videos which had that type of music.
ImperialDoor i was looking for futuristic funk thanks to American Dad :)
i thought it popped up because i just got back from japan that time
You all are right. YT does push trends, but it needs a tiny push from you first.
So good! The animation and visuals fit together so nicely with the subject, it looks great! ! I'm so proud
"Where Are You?" by CLC is very much a City Pop song
th-cam.com/video/lNUP5B_NZUE/w-d-xo.html
Also Baek Yerin of 15& recently did a cover of "La La La Love Song" by Toshinobu Kubota that is nothing short of excellent
th-cam.com/video/JvIgqD_jUos/w-d-xo.html
Gfriend's most recent single "Sunny Summer" definitely takes some City Pop/Future Funk influences with its use of horns
th-cam.com/video/9iPLjmz3_U4/w-d-xo.html
I definitely wish there were more K-Pop songs that took influence from City Pop and Future Funk, its easily one of my favorite music genres, but sadly that's all I've been able to find so far.
- Andrew
Me lowkey internal crying because yubin city woman and clc where are you are my fav. Songs. And i think clc`s where are you is aesthetic!
I NEED TO SEE THAT CLIP IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR IT
The song Plastic Love didn' speak to my ears or brain.. it spoke to my soul.
I really needed that song in my life.
*mocks Japanese pronunciation by saying "engrish"*
*continues butchering Japanese names*
not being butthurt or anything. But oh that sweet irony!
Cool
"Engrish" is a word. M'dude.
"ma-rai-ah"
Lmao “Engrish” isn’t mocking. It’s a real word, why don’t you look it up?
textbook butthurt
Wasn't popular before because maybe it was beyond it's time, but you are right after listening to it which was mysteriously recommended by TH-cam, I started listening to other japanese artists of that time like Miki Matsubara and Meiko Nakahara, so Mariya Takeuchi was indeed the starting point
i jumped out of my seat when i saw that cityscape from ai city.
another excellent video my dude! :3
Oh yeah ahahahha yeah definitely not that part more so that night neon opening
I love Mariya- I hope she makes a comeback or something.. (she’s like 63 so I doubt it though lol) Yamashita and her are both amazing! Anyways, this was a really good video! You got yourself a new subscriber!
she is making a comeback actually! www.asianjunkie.com/2018/09/09/takeuchi-mariya-announces-new-single-in-october-remastered-version-of-debut-album/
It was disappointing that this song wasn't featured in TH-cam Rewind
Mr. Person Humanson can’t get the rights to use it lol
^
It was too pure to be in that shitshow
Fire Cloud6 bingo.
TH-cam Rewind is disappointing by definition
Thank you for this enlightening video! Such a great analysis!
I love this and 4AM by Taeko Ohnuki.
MyNameIsSladeWilson n there's this another great song
Telephone number
YESSS and telephone by junko
Taehko ohnuki - じゃじゃ馬娘 this is better
Ironically this song came right next on autoplay
I didn't realize how much I need an acapella slowed down version of this song. DEAR GOD
The song at 6:32 is The Word II by Shigeo Sekito not Mac DeMarco
Update: DeMarco thanked Shigeo and he did a wonderful job recreating the chords in Chamber of Reflection.
moviemagic
The World?
Shigeo?
That kinda sounds like DIO, doesn't it?
Geo=Earth
DIO=God(in Italian)
The World is DIO's stand.
Mac DeMarco has the same type of stand confirmed.
Lumicrat ?
ZA WARUDOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
listens to death grips
TH-cam: suggest plastic love
Bruh I thought this was a Plastic Love and What is love mashup
_bamboozled_
*BEYBI DON'T HURT MIIIII*
This needs to exist
My first city pop is Plastic Love and more searching and I found a gold. "Miki Matsubara - Stay with me" is my fav now.
Soil and Pimp. Now that's taking it back. Not as far as Plastic Love tho'
Same, guess TH-cam recommendations is pretty powerful
I wonder when Haruomi Hosono is gonna blow up🤔🤔
I love Plastic Love. Replaying it over and over is like an addictive drug 💊😍
It is an instant ear worm, I've been listening for about a month while making this vid and I'm still not sick of it
Chunner / Kolinner it really is and I really love it but sadly her music isn't on Spotify
Why did I expect a 10 minute long 'Haddaway - What is Love' and 'Plastic Love' mashup?
Me too
THAT WOULD WRECK OUR SHIT
THOSE BOTH SONGS ARE TOO GODLY FOR OUR EARS TO HEAR, WE WILL DIE IN A FEW SECONDS IF PLAYED.
I was introduced to city pop in 2017,p it started becoming popular in 2020 because of tiktok, knowing citypop pretiktok is my biggest flex
I used to look up 80s jpop on youtube and this song and stay with me by miki matsuabara were my faves im glad that songs from years ago have a place in this generation it just shows how much things have changed and evolved
Your videos are supa dupa great! Always interesting and easy to be understood by foreign listeners. Please keep making more videos. Thanks!
I will do everything can! I always try to subtitle the videos for those hard of hearing or non native listeners so they have a chance of getting more from it
fantastic work :)
that ae86 makes me miss mine
Aww man you must have been driving in 90s like mad
disabled, no longer able to drive stick well any more. it only had 58k miles on it when i sold it . i have a video of it on my channel
this is like listening to the best dream ever. its like clouds that i wanna live in. such a vibe. im in love with this song now thank you
YES, YES & YES!!! beats and music so rich. Japanese are really good at perfecting anything, music included. We love it cause it has a pieces of music we are so familiar with.
She looks like the real thing.
She tastes like the real thing.
My fake plastic love.
My mio.
👌🏼😂 you’re a genius
as of 2019, Plastic love videos already reached a whooping 60+ million views (culminations of some other similar videos).
Congrats you dented history,
I flipped when Chamber of Reflection started playing
Danny McNeela macyyyy
Junko Ohashi - Telephone number (1984)
Rampage T awoooo 56709
AWOOOOOOOOOO

*56709*
5:02 HEY IT'S ME. Didn't expect to see that lol
Haha yes, congratulations this is your first role in a Stevem production
Wow.That's amazing. Good on you. How did you notice? Did you remember posting on that subreddit?
Would you say stumbling on this video was one of your happiest moments?
WIlly Tee No it's that TH-cam comment on the right
Is this real life?
Thank you for providing thorough sources for the material used in the video!
PLASTICLOVER
NUJABES!!!!!! R.I.P Seba Jun
Omg, such an amazing song... It really blows my mind AND it introduced me to that genre of japanese music!
Very nice stuff my dude. Keep releasing videos like this!
The visuals of this editing is so amazing! I'm subscribing now. :)
Plastic love is love, plastic love is life
I was sent here by Whang. good video, even though I'd never even heard of the song before his video.
Taeko Ohnuki - 4:00 AM - 1978 is another city bop
It's better than Plastic Love, in my opinion. Taeko's voice is amazing.
Taehko ohnuki - じゃじゃ馬娘 this song is better than 4:00 AM
Yasssss
I am glad that im not the only one that has the perspective when it comes to the importance of the visuals of the character and the music combined.
Nice video! [suscribed]
This has shown up on my youtube music and I can't ever skip.
Vaporwave is making a comeback.
[takeout] that isn’t vaporewave
нεcкαвσσ
80s vibes have been coming back for a while now.
@@k-leb4671 The 80's vibes never left us to begin with
It's a City Pop, not a Vaporwave
нεcкαвσσ again again?
7:36 that caught me off guard
I actually bought the single on eBay
No regrets
This was one of the best written videos I have ever watched in a long time!
This is so well done thank you. I found City Pop this January and haven't stopped listening since! I'm so happy!
I’ve been listening to “Plastic Love” this WHOLE WEEK😂 issa bop👌
Also pleeeease pleaaaaseee do a video on Nujabes next 😢, my boi needs some recognition and he deserves it 😔💖
Yes i agree, legend of man
Nujabes is a legend. May he rest in beats..💗 He really should do a video on Nujabes
@@dream_dealer chilliest beats and not to forget his stuff was part of Samurai Champloo.
@@applecrave1097 Yeah, I know! I discovered him because of Champloo, and funnily enough, it's my favorite anime :)
@@applecrave1097 dude samurai champloo is the best ever . Love seba Jun he's the greatest .
You’re on r/vaporwave, friend. Well done! This song is an internet staple!
great is what you did in your videos. the idea is something I really wanted to see and I love the execution. completely buying it.
Goddamn this is a good analysis bro. Awesome video
