I'd like to extend a large middle finger to Hyperkin for giving away tons of these to TH-cam reviewers and not having enough for many of us who pre-ordered them on Amazon long ago.. Thanks!
videogameobsession I too am in the same boat . All these reviewers get theirs and now I'll be lucky to get mine. by Wednesday which is ridiculous being that I preordered mine from Amazon on May10. When I review it, I'm definitely going to bring up the stupidity of how long it took me to get mine.
And probably will never see a physical copy even in pal form. Anyway, on eBay the entire world is a potential buyer /seller so 99 isn't really that much at all.
yeah I just preordered mine just waiting for it to be shipped from Amazon appreciate you showing everything so keep up the good work and have a good one
I got this for Christmas as an alternative to the original Nes here in the UK... I love it.. It has a slight sound difference but that said its brilliant for playing my collection nes of video games.. Great video.
This thing is putting out some odd colors. Look at the stones at the 5:08 mark. On the original NES they look white with a tiny shade of green; giving a mossy look. The RetronHD looks like the stones are just all green.
This thing is amazing. I own one, love it. Have two original Nintendo systems as well. I like using this as to not beat up my original systems. Saves me installing new 72 pin connectors.
The Immortal John Hancock said Ninja Gaiden didn't work in his. Did you try it? If not, would you? Curiosity is killing me. I liked the grey one at first but now I think I prefer the black. Also, the Retron 5 is just emulating but it still does scanlines and such. I still feel the Retron Freak and the Retro AVS are the 2 best buys for what they do, the first for variety and convenience and the second for NES and FC only. Just my opinion. I'm probably wrong.
Will this be able to play Aladdin Deck Enhancer game cartridges like the NES? I'm only asking because I heard that some of these HD clone consoles have trouble with them. Thanks.
I was just about to order one of these, but the screwed up audio is a total deal breaker. I hope the mini USB port can carry data too, and maybe the hardware has updatable firmware, and they can fix the issue.
I wouldn't mind getting one of these for my other TV and I really like that it uses standard NES controllers. However, i've not seen anyone do a compatibility video.....does this work with Game Genie? Does it work with the Super Games 150-in-1 cartridge?
return of the console bit wars lolCan you get it in different colors or just offwhite?I think it would be dope if it came in piano black to match with modern television sets.
I just got mine yesterday and outta the box using the hdmi cable it works great. One caveat though, I tried out both my original NES and NES Max control pads and the buttons aren't mapped properly and the start, select and crosspad doesn't work. Idk if it's my unit but have you tried using the original pads on your system yet?
I'd like to get this for my kids (ages 4 and 9), but I'm just worried that it will be like my retron 5 where if you are not careful pulling the cartridges out the pins will bend, and you know how kids are.
I have to admit they did at least rly put effort into the way it looks, for a $40 console. I like how it looks like an NES and the controller looks nice too. I think the AVS really kickstarted all these cheap HDMI NES clone consoles. Great in-depth review. Too bad the achilles heel of it is it's bad NOAC sound.
Gamester81 I just received mine a couple of days ago. The picture and sound are fantastic on official carts. However I played a multicast on it and found that the sound has incredibly bad lag and the graphics are glitchy on most of the games. I am not disappointed at all with the system. Best affordable NES clone HD system in my opinion. Just definitely do not recommend multicart play on it.
You have low standards if you consider the picture and sound quality fantastic. Get a proper clone like the AVS and you'll see a night and day difference.
That's why I'm starting to be clear up front that I wasn't paid. I've only been paid for one video way back in the day, and that was a mistake. People can assume all they want, but it doesn't make it true. Thanks for your support man.
I've been coming to your channel since your original Retron 5 review, when I was first considering getting into retro game collecting (thanks for the in-depth review on that system by the way), and have been blown away by how articulate and forthright you are for your videos. Never worry about "Internet Warriors". Haters are always going to hate. Keep up the great work, sir and thank you for all the great content you've made over the years.
Stan - "Haters are always going to hate" That logic is mind-boggling. Live in a society where in public any criticisms, different opinion or facts are just dismissed as "hate". *slams head into wall* Facters gonna fact.
Ze Bunker looks like we going have an huge epic retro HD clone console war welcome to the new HD retro clone console war prepare for the next fucking epic Battle.
How's it work with MMC5 games like CV3? Hyperkin has been stepping up its game lately. Got me one of their Warrior Pro controllers for PS2. HUUUUGE step up from most aftermarket PS2 pads.
Based on the video comparison, it doesn't look like that much of an improvement, and in some respects looks worse. For example, I noticed that the white pixels representing waves in the water around the ship, island, and shorelines in the map are very muted in the RetroN HD picture. They're a very dull purple color, as are the ship's sails, and almost invisible. It also looks a bit blurrier than I would expect. I don't know if that's as prominent in real life as in the capture, however.
That would depend on the capture card recording the video and so forth. May look different on your HD TV. Specially if it's calibrated or not, make and model, etc. I wouldn't judge color or sound based on a youtube video.
At least with The original Retron that played only NES games, light gun games were still very glitchy and didn't work right on a CRT. You should test this system and see how well it does with that.
Blake did you order from Hyperkin or Amazon? The Amazon shipping is delayed. I pre-ordered mine and Amazon had a ship date of 6/2. Got an email from Amazon today estimating the delivery date of 6/21-6/30. Don't know what the extra delay is about.
Hyperkin gave them all away to TH-camrs and left those of us who paid for it out to dry. I don't expect these to actually be in stock until the Fall. But hey, they are actually doing you a favor. I'd take the money and put it towards a RetroUSB AVS. I have one and they are amazing. The accuracy is perfect and there are a ton of options, including one which can actually remove flicker from a lot of NES/Famicom games. I also don't think I'd want to play a system like this on an HDTV without scanlines, after playing them that way on the AVS. It makes the games pop. You also get 4 controller ports (NES Satellite support), 2 official NES NOS Power/Reset buttons, NES and Famicom cartridge ports, Famicom EXT (FDS support), Built-in Game Genie, online high score support, multiple color palettes, and support for extra Famicom chip audio. Currently $170 and worth every penny IMO.
So I preordered this on amazon a month ago and it was supposed to ship today, but now amazon is telling me Hyperkin didnt ship to them. WTF is going on
I actually already own an AVS since October 2017, but I was more curious than anything and since it was less than the price of most games I figured why not, but since they put me on backorder status I just canceled it.
Scalpers don't want things that are not limited and Hyperkin isn't known for quality so scalpers just doesn't want to bother with those. When your company's product is so hype that even people are willing to scalp for them then you've found success. Nintendo's problem is that they didn't take advantage of that success, instead they dropped it and no other alternatives would ever going to repeat that.
It's quite possible that Nintendo wasn't making very much profit on the NES Classic console and that it was used as nothing more than a way to make everyone recall how much clout Nintendo can still have. Keep in mind The NES Classic Edition has quite a few 3rd party games. I would imagine they have to pay rights on each and every one of those. It was always planned as a short term offering. They will no doubt make more money on the SNES Classic with less total games, and more being 1st party. Not to mention they are using the same ARM architecture hardware and charging $80 this time.
I like how it is compatible for RCA. Personally I would rather play the game 4/3, because I can not stand images being stretched. How ever that is just my preference. Other people probably hate seeing black bars on wide screens.
I just can't understand why they didn't put a Famicom slot on this console as well. That alone would cause me to not want this. I shouldn't have to use Famicom to NES adaptors.
While it would be handy - personally I don't like having both slots built into the console. It's ugly, makes it look cobbled-together. Even on high-end clones like the Analogue NT I thought it looked awful having both slots there.
even though I have the Gamerz Tek 8-bit HD console I'm still gonna by this. so I can do some comparisons. and when I'm gonna test it out first game obviously I'm gonna play play on it is my favorite, Mother (Earthbound) :)
Christopher Castaneda it's hard for me to say honestly. I haven't bought that one in the the review yet. but when I do I'll answer you right away. but for the most part the 8-bit HD by GamerzTek isn't bad at all! it came with 2 controllers and those controllers may look odd BUT they were very responsive!! I was blown away, I thought it would be 3rd party garbage but I was dead wrong. and right now it costs around $30+ on Amazon. I will say it's a little quiet but that doesn't bother me I can always higher the volume. but overall it is something to look into.
Gamester81, did you open your eyes or ears while playing this thing? After watching the RetroRGB review, if it really looks and sounds as bad as it did in his review, how can you possibly in good conscience recommend this thing to ANY of your loyal viewers? I am sorry man, but you should be ashamed...
What a big mistake a did,i remember a friend give to me like 20 Nes games then that time was no retron for i can play those so i thrown them to the garbage,i think was 2001
Instead of a useless 16:9 / 4:3 switch (anything other than 4:3 is silly), they should have added something else such as an alternate color palette or PAL/NTSC. Anything would have been better than an option to turn circles into ovals.
Am positive about the retron N console but i don't like the weird controller design and the richt side of the console, because it looks more like as if someone used a slash hamer to beat on the richt side of the console. Same with the controller wich also looks like being hit with a slash hamer on both lower side edges of the controller, so your vingers can slide of very easily. But it's otherwise better then the many other clones.
Awesomely Sarcastic Actually it depends on what conditions come with the product. A reviewer can be required so say good things about the product in exchange. Or what most do. Say what ever they want. Sure you might not receive another product to review but you still have your integrity.
It's not false. Giving someone a review copy of something isn't a paid endorsement. If they shipped it with the catch that he give it a positive review, the that would be a bribe.
A free anything will sway you, me and everyone else, whether it's a little or a lot depends on the person...anyone who thinks different, either does not know human nature or does not live in the real world lol
If you recieve the unit, at no cost, and then return it after it would be considered unbiased. However if you get to keep it, then you were actually paid, because you are doing the review because they gave it to you.
Did he not say he got the console for free to review it? Then go onto say he was not paid additional money for his review? Let's argue over semantics in an attempt to attack his credibility (*note* this is sarcasm)
He lost credibility when he whored for that 'retro console' that they tried to play off as a snes pushed into a jaguar shell. Considering the majority of his 'content' is just 'stuff someone sent me for free to review'... credibility is long gone.
I think this is the first video of his that I've seen, and I haven't used the product he is talking about in this video, so I can't speak to whether this truly is a good product or not. I have seen other reviews of this though, and the feedback has been fairly good overall. Being sent a product to review is not the same as being paid to review something. Almost all major reviewers (youtube channels, websites, publications, etc.) receive free copies of whatever they are reviewing. That's how it works. It's part of a company's marketing strategy. They want to spread the word. So you can't deduce that he's been "bought out" simply for getting a free review copy, or else you're saying that all reviewers are "bought out". Your conclusion cannot be deduced from your premise. Now if all his reviews are glowing ones, and this doesn't match up with other reviews for the same products, then perhaps that is evidence that he's not credible. Without corroborating evidence though, it's simply an argument from ignorance.
If you receive a product, for free, with the expectation of reviewing it, you got paid via the value of the item being reviewed. The more honest youtubers will either 1, return the product after, or 2, give the item away to someone. As to my original point of 'credibility', his has been diminished significantly over the retro vgs scandal. Some might say, 'well if you don't trust his content, why watch it' and to that i say, because i want to see if he ever returns to his old ways where his videos were more than 'i got this for free, played with it for 5 minutes, its so awesome you should buy it'. (this last part was an exaggeration, but you should get the point).
If you receive a product for free with the expectation of reviewing it, it makes you a reviewer, not a liar. His channel has over 100k subscribers, so of course companies are going to send him free stuff to review, that's part of marketing. It gets there product a lot of exposure, even if he says bad things about it. The old adage, "There's no such thing as bad publicity." Whether this qualifies as being paid is a semantic argument, and in no way evidence for or against his credibility. That said, I'm not saying you're right or wrong about his credibility. I'm not making any claim as to whether he is credible or not. I'm not familiar with what the vgs scandal is, and I haven't seen all his other videos, so maybe there is a clear trend of glowing feedback for items that the general consensus is that they're not good. My point is what I said in my previous reply, and reiterated in the first paragraph of this reply. Simply receiving items for free (whether he keeps them or not) is not evidence for or against his credibility. It is simply a fact. Using that fact as "evidence" is specious reasoning.
the reason people are questioning you is because of the stuff that seems completely random you review. Like a raspberry pi that you can buy for 30 bucks, some company is repackaging and charging you 150 for. Or the app for game collecting. I miss the times you used to review actual old hardware or games. Not that i still don't like your channel.
You lost me when you said This has a “fairly accurate” color pallets and “good” sound... both completely false statements... if you just want to play NES games and you don’t care about sharp pixels and decent sound or color, sure get it. If you care about accurate color and sound, look somewhere else.
I'd like to extend a large middle finger to Hyperkin for giving away tons of these to TH-cam reviewers and not having enough for many of us who pre-ordered them on Amazon long ago.. Thanks!
videogameobsession no wonder Amazon hasn't shipped mine.. didn't know that.
was wondering why I hadn't got mine yet
Well, considering they ripped off their entire system from retroarch...
videogameobsession I too am in the same boat . All these reviewers get theirs and now I'll be lucky to get mine. by Wednesday which is ridiculous being that I preordered mine from Amazon on May10. When I review it, I'm definitely going to bring up the stupidity of how long it took me to get mine.
Showing off his super rare duck tales 2 to show us how it runs. Lol
;)
99 results on ebay seach "Duck Tales 2". A few of them are famicom, but still, It is not super rare! ;)
How many real ntsc carts have you seen in your life?
Do you mean in person? None.. I'm in Europe ;)
And probably will never see a physical copy even in pal form. Anyway, on eBay the entire world is a potential buyer /seller so 99 isn't really that much at all.
Your reviews are fantastic and I enjoy hearing your take on all these consoles.
Looking forward to more reviews. Have a great weekend!
I got mine on pre-order. Can't wait to check it out!
I'm actually quite amazed with the sound quality of the retron hd system.
yeah I just preordered mine just waiting for it to be shipped from Amazon appreciate you showing everything so keep up the good work and have a good one
Been wanting you to review this. Thanks for this John! Great stuff as always.
Mike Vito who cares what super rare means too you. Go cry cause I called duck tales 2 super rare. I really can care less.
What? I never said anything about a game being rare. WTF are you talking about?
This thing is amazing. I own one, love it. Have two original Nintendo systems as well. I like using this as to not beat up my original systems. Saves me installing new 72 pin connectors.
What would be beter if you plug this thing to a crt television? the super retro trio or retron HD, talking only about nes games
It works
Hipster Hoarders As I suspected. Thanks!
I play Ninja Gaiden on mine.
Looks interesting and sounds good from the video, but I would ask if you noitced the sound being off or just wired which is come for a lot of clones?
Will this be able to play Aladdin Deck Enhancer game cartridges like the NES? I'm only asking because I heard that some of these HD clone consoles have trouble with them. Thanks.
Hey John,
Are you running your original NES through RF? That audio buzz is not normal.
Does it work with the Super Games 150-in-1 cartridge?
can you use original NES controllers? Because I have a Nintendo NES Advantage Controller i love to use. Would love the help! Thanks!
return of the console bit wars lolCan you get it in different colors or just offwhite?I think it would be dope if it came in piano black to match with modern television sets.
You make a real good point about the look and feel of it! Especially the controller... That is key to a real Nintendo experience.
Kinda disappointed that it doesn't play famicom games I was hoping it would be able to run famicom disk system games as well
Does it play homebrew Zelda carts?
Great Review John. Thank you!
This is pretty sweet! I need to get my hands on one when I can.
can you please tell me if this works with the Everdrive N8?
You forgot to mention that there is also a switch at the bottom to change between PAL and NTSC. Nice review.
I know this is an older video now, but I have an original NES, but it hasn't been working reliably as of late, should I buy this ?
So what does "dumping the ROM" mean?
Got mine today and both controller ports didn't work.....
Hiya John! That Retron HD looks so tiny in your hands lol :) I wanted one of these and totally forgot to preorder one like a dummy. Great vid!
I'd like to get this for my kids (ages 4 and 9), but I'm just worried that it will be like my retron 5 where if you are not careful pulling the cartridges out the pins will bend, and you know how kids are.
Are there enough new Retro consoles on the market yet?
Awesome review John!
I've had mine ordered on Amazon, and they still haven't shipped it yet.
Cool shirt!! Houston native here
Do u feel the new retron hd systems are better to buy instead of the retron 5?
Gamester81 I just received mine a couple of days ago. The picture and sound are fantastic on official carts. Does it work with homebrews?
what is so different about castlevania 3 that most clones cant play it? just curious
www.nesclone.com/guide/nes-clone-and-famicone-compatibility-explained/
Retro-Bit is gonna release their HD NES too. Sounds like these companies are like the two rivals of retro clone consoles.
Just bought one 3 days ago. I really liked it. For the price its not bad.
The design quirk they've applied to the system, controller, and box is just too perfect. They're literally "cutting corners"
Hmm, with it being software based I wonder if light gun games will actually work on it. The timing has to be extremely precise.
It is not software-based, it's a system on a chip.
Here comes the "hope they paid you well to review this" comments. Ridiculous, liked the review thanks
That's why I'm starting to be clear up front that I wasn't paid. I've only been paid for one video way back in the day, and that was a mistake. People can assume all they want, but it doesn't make it true. Thanks for your support man.
No worries at all, thank you for making content for us to enjoy especially these system reviews, I am sure they are a huge help for many.
I've been coming to your channel since your original Retron 5 review, when I was first considering getting into retro game collecting (thanks for the in-depth review on that system by the way), and have been blown away by how articulate and forthright you are for your videos. Awesome stuff Bro
awesome review!
Great review! Amazon has this at about $77.... hoping it gets closer to $40 soon!
How's it work with MMC5 games like CV3?
Hyperkin has been stepping up its game lately. Got me one of their Warrior Pro controllers for PS2. HUUUUGE step up from most aftermarket PS2 pads.
save states?
Did you try Ninja Gaiden on it? I heard that game doesn't work on it
Gamester81 does the zapper work on it
pwap - only when connected to a crt tv.
Based on the video comparison, it doesn't look like that much of an improvement, and in some respects looks worse. That would depend on the capture card recording the video and so forth. May look different on your HD TV. Specially if it's calibrated or not, make and model, etc. I wouldn't judge color or sound based on a youtube video.
He's got some big ol' hands.
At least with The original Retron that played only NES games, light gun games were still very glitchy and didn't work right on a CRT. You should test this system and see how well it does with that.
The price jumped up about 30 extra bucks on the release date. Pre-ordered mine early last month, showing expected June 22-July 5. WTF?!
I swear you make controllers look tiny in your hands haha
I'm really looking forward to the first teardown to see what's under the hood. Strange that it doesn't support flashcarts.
Damn I bought mine the day John Hancock talked about it they still haven't shipped it. Been five days. Do they have a contact number?
Blake did you order from Hyperkin or Amazon? The Amazon shipping is delayed. I pre-ordered mine and Amazon had a ship date of 6/2. Got an email from Amazon today estimating the delivery date of 6/21-6/30. Don't know what the extra delay is about.

Currently $170 and worth every penny IMO.
It's been 10 days it finally says it is in the process of shipping should arrive on Thursday 12 days total not that bad thanks everyone.
It's great! Audio is a little off but it's still good. These stand alone HD versions are awesome. I like them better than the three in one versions.
your videos are so helpful.
I read somewhere that RetronHD was hardware emulation
So I preordered this on amazon a month ago and it was supposed to ship today, but now amazon is telling me Hyperkin didnt ship to them. WTF is going on
Hmm...sounds like a good question to address to Hyperkin to see what's up. Sorry man.
Hyperkin says amazon oversold their preorders, amazon said Hyperkin hasnt shipped it. so theyre just pointing fingers at each other
Michael Costa yeah, I got an email today from Amazon estimating delivery of 6/21-6/30. Not too happy.
Snickedy Snee thanks man makes me feel better that I'm not the only one that got boned
HA this is why I thought you looked familiar when I talked to you at phx comic con. I thought we had just met last year at the expo.
You had me sold until I couldn't play Castlevania 3... jk nice review.
Thanks Guys.
he said you CAN play Castlevania 3, what you can't play are the flash carts.
flash-carts might damage your console. Google it
Love the look...tell them to do a snes like that
So it's not emulation ?
Well at least Hyperkin didn't reserve this console for scalpers. 😁
No, they gave a bunch away to TH-camrs and didn't have enough to fill pre-orders for people who pre-ordered months ago though.
videogameobsession Well I guess I can take back there kudos. ☹️
I actually already own an AVS since October 2017, but I was more curious than anything and since it was less than the price of most games I figured why not, but since they put me on backorder status I just canceled it.

Not to mention they are using the same ARM architecture hardware and charging $80 this time.
I may pick this up
Won't play flash carts? no sale
flash-carts might kill your console slowly. Google it
Cool Video! Really nice system though Disappointing Gauntlet is not compatible given its nearly my favorite coop game on Nes..
I like how it is compatible for RCA. Personally I would rather play the game 4/3, because I can not stand images being stretched. How ever that is just my preference. Other people probably hate seeing black bars on wide screens.
So, if you want a no-frills NES, this'll do.
If it had a sd slot I would probably buy it. I only have a few Carts.
John said "flash carts" don't work on the RetroN HD (e.g., Everdrive, PowerPak) :(
AVS ($170) + Everdrive N8 ($83 on sale) + 8Bitdo NES30 Bluetooth controller ($35) Is everything you'll ever need.
Hyperkin = Pass!
The marked is really flooded with retro consoles now...
I love mine. finally! Can't wait for the retro77. Just keep releasing clone hardware. that's all we really need. I don't like emulation.
So, SRP is $39.99 but all sellers on amazon and ebay charge $70+ for it. Too bad. It would've been the perfect solution for me...
where is a HD NES that plays flash carts?!?
I just can't understand why they didn't put a Famicom slot on this console as well. That alone would cause me to not want this. I shouldn't have to use Famicom to NES adaptors.

would you recommend the 8 bit HD? was leaning towards that one or this
Christopher Castaneda it's hard for me to say honestly.
You make all the systems look super tiny in your hands.
The sound is terrible. Sounds like they designed it for a gameboy clone system
Sucks that scalpers already got to these.
your nes needs either a new power supply or better quality rca's, thats some wicked buzz. i'll stick with my av famicom
Just casually showing it off with a 200 dollar game lol.

'Very clear sound, very clear image.' Oh yeah, they're clear....clearly crap.
Hyperkin, "cutting corners" again.. :P
There is a switch from PAL to NTSC
Am positive about the retron N console but i don't like the weird controller design and the richt side of the console, because it looks more like as if someone used a slash hamer to beat on the richt side of the console.
Same with the controller wich also looks like being hit with a slash hamer on both lower side edges of the controller, so your vingers can slide of very easily.
But it's otherwise better then the many other clones.
Hyper Foreskin = Pass. They are new MadCatz and the old RabidDogz of the game world.
You DID get paid tho, with a FREE console...
Awesomely Sarcastic
I have no problem with that. If the console is sh*t who cares if it's free?
I have no problem either, a guy's gotta make a living but the statement: "this is not a paid endorsement" is FALSE.
So hyperkin wants people to think their trademark is cutting corners. Not the smartest thing to be known for.
the reason people are questioning you is because of the stuff that seems completely random you review.
