Actually no, I did a little research on the genetics of that color. It's a simple recessive like albino, but it reacts to the base color. If the base color is black, then they are a light cream almost white color. If the base color is agouti (the natural brownish gray color most rats are) then they come out this yellow color. The gene that causes these colors is known as "RED" among the domestic fancy rat people. Albino just takes out all the pigment and makes the rat pure white, regardless of the base color.
Imagine being a dog but for a portion of each day you get to relive that primal instinct and be a wolf. A hunter. They must love it and it must be good for their soul.

When I was growing up, I had a German Shepherd. We lived in an area where there were quite a few rats and other animals. That dog, big and a bit overweight as she was lol, was a total rat killer. We had the only yard that was essentially rat-free, aside from the dead ones with german shepherd bite marks.
Here's an interesting genetics fact. The recessive gene that causes rats and mice to have an orange/blonde coat is actually a 'fatal gene' when the rat inherits two copies of it, ie when they express the blonde coat colour. 'Fatal gene' is the term used for a gene/gene combination that causing death in an individual before they can reproduce. A quarter of all blonde rat pups are stillborn, and the rest tend to have far shorter lifespans than wild-type (brown). They are prone to obesity, cancer, and a number of other health issues. So the rat population at this farm is on average a less fit one, due to the high number of blonde rats.
And what would happen to those blonde rats if they had blue eyes? HUH? Then I think we'd have something really to worry about. Especially if it began playing flute.
You can't beat the hunting skills of a Jack Russell. I had two of them when I owned a farm, nothing lived, no snakes, mice, rats, ground hogs, porcupines, frogs, toads nothing. I have the vet bills to prove it. My dog always broke the blood vessels in his ears and by the time he was old, his ears where a mess. I got really good at taking out the porcupine quills myself as I couldn't afford to keep taking them to the vet.
There must bee people doing joseph job on australia i assume, a small amount but still. I would love to see this method of rat-hunting done in a bigger scale for scenarios like Australia, that would be a sight to behold

There is nothing natural about a dog buddy, don't get it twisted. The dog is a domestic animal that has been artificially created and cross bred through generations by humans to achieve certain looks and shapes. Their "natural" instincts only tell them to eat, mate and follow their owner. You have to train them to hunt, so it doesn't come naturally to them, unlike other domestic animals like cats. It's jaw dropping that i have to be explaining this to you buddy.

Watching the people interact with the dogs and the mink is so cool, it’s like they all have a mutual respect for each other’s abilities with everyone playing an important role
@Kratos GodofWar LOL! There's no such thing as "fair play" in ratting. Either you get it, or you don't. And Boss is the biggest stealer of them all! It's kinda his thing. 😁
I love all animals including rats but I understand wild ones can be pests. That's why I love these videos!! No poison just good old fashioned training and hunting!!
Same here. I Really like animals and it feels very weird and wrong hearing these little rats squeaking like this but I also know that its the best thing to be done against these rats. No chemicals or something like that but really efficient and very well trained dogs. Thats really impressive imo.
12:40- this is true! I work for Terminix and learned that rat's are very cautious especially with new things. When I set traps out I always tell the home owner not to expect a rat caught in one right off the bat. I also tell the owner to not move the box unless necessary because I want the rat to get use to seeing the trap
Your dogs are just as impressive as the mink. I had a female rescue dog that would let me know every time we had a mouse in our garage. I once saw her chasing something in the yard and she came running back with a 13 stripe gopher in her mouth. Sadly she developed health conditions that prevented me from actually training her to be a hunting dog. We lost her in February after 13 years.
It's weird when you see the dogs or the mink kill a rat, you immediately think "Wow! How cruel!" But then you think of the benefits and you see how well trained these animals are, the videos are very interesting to watch.
I’m saying this not to criticize you by any means, just a semi related observation I have about most people, including myself. It’s interesting that our natural reaction to the video is to cringe and say, “that’s a cruel way to eradicate rats”, but we are totally fine with poisoning them which is a far, far, more cruel way to die 10 second quick death via dog or mink, vs days / weeks of torture as the poison burns you inside out I’ll take the dogs
I feel bad sometimes, it's a natural human reaction when something is screaming for its life but at the same time it has to be done and honestly this is the most humane way, poison is a far worse death and can also effect other animals
More rats gone, more grass & crops saved, more cattle fed, more human out of hunger. Some people show their "caring" by speech. Your team benefit the whole society by action. Well done and respect!
This reminds me of back when I lived with my grandparents. They lived outta town, had a giant backyard, my grandpa took to turning a portion of it into his own little farm, grew grapes, tomatoes, beans and peppers, yet we also had a huge problem with both groundhogs and moles eating the crops, as well as snakes So there were three dogs they owned, a jack Russell named Thor, a pitbull named Sadie and a Border Collie called Hazel, and every weekend, since I was still in school I'd pick up a shovel or a pickaxe and just go out patrolling with those three dogs looking for vermin, and we'd almost always catch one or two of something. I loved those three dogs, they were like siblings to me, and I was so glad to have them keep me company as we went hunting protecting our turf
Also, that is mind boggling how much food the farm owners spend on "feeding" the rats per month. Over 1,000 pounds per month, not including wasted food, etc.
I can’t help imagining the experience from the rat’s perspective. The roof of your home is ripped away and you’re immediately set upon by a pack of enormous mouths.

On Shawn's channel, he has a link or go-to Amazon & order the large 4x7" metal snap traps w/ teeth on front edge. Very powerful & I have reused multiple times with No loss in spring snap or strength. About 4 for $12. I use a box or plastic container to funnel them in. (Make sure it's high enough to allow for arm swing. I place a small pebble under bait trigger ( so they are used to it visually lifted) & bait for several days. Then remove pebble & set the trap. The box helps funnel them so they can't come from behind or sides to lick or steal bait. Good luck!

Those types of dogs were bred exactly for this purpose. That's why Terrier are so aggressive. Bred to hunt.
@@Bayseek Yeah, that's why I like these videos. While rats in general aren't bad, these rats are currently agricultural pests, and it gives the terrier the opportunity to do her job and get mental stimulation. She might be feisty, but that's cause she's living it up.

Literally that was so interesting, thank you!!!
Legit genetics lesson, thanks!

I got really good at taking out the porcupine quills myself as I couldn't afford to keep taking them to the vet.
as owner of a Jack Russel I confirm, with them you will not have to worry about annoying small animals in the garden

Underrated comment
The amount of exercise these dogs are getting, while practicing their natural instincts is outstanding.

She lived long and probably died of old age, probably even died happy
Buttercup is an absolute savage.
It’s interesting that our natural reaction to the video is to cringe and say, “that’s a cruel way to eradicate rats”, but we are totally fine with poisoning them which is a far, far, more cruel way to die
10 second quick death via dog or mink, vs days / weeks of torture as the poison burns you inside out
I’ll take the dogs
I have never once thought “ wow, how cruel” but good for them
The rat is dead almost instantly. The dogs snap their necks when they shake them like that. With rat poison they can take hours to days to die.
I feel bad sometimes, it's a natural human reaction when something is screaming for its life but at the same time it has to be done and honestly this is the most humane way, poison is a far worse death and can also effect other animals
I think "wow how cool" lmao
Love how passionate this guy is at keeping rat problems under control
More rats gone, more grass & crops saved, more cattle fed, more human out of hunger. Some people show their "caring" by speech. Your team benefit the whole society by action. Well done and respect!
The dogs must be so happy and have a lot of fun!
This reminds me of back when I lived with my grandparents. They lived outta town, had a giant backyard, my grandpa took to turning a portion of it into his own little farm, grew grapes, tomatoes, beans and peppers, yet we also had a huge problem with both groundhogs and moles eating the crops, as well as snakes
So there were three dogs they owned, a jack Russell named Thor, a pitbull named Sadie and a Border Collie called Hazel, and every weekend, since I was still in school I'd pick up a shovel or a pickaxe and just go out patrolling with those three dogs looking for vermin, and we'd almost always catch one or two of something.
I loved those three dogs, they were like siblings to me, and I was so glad to have them keep me company as we went hunting protecting our turf
It was pretty interesting that they were helping out each other and having each others backs, it was just so satisfying how they catches the rats.
He got the golden rat, does that mean he gets to go to Willy Wonky’s Chocolate Factory and hunt rats there?
No, he gets a lifetime pass to Chuck E Cheese
Top comment and no one can tell me otherwise 🤣
nope. It means he just won the game of rattich (quidich for dogs).
You know that hawk came around because it heard all the squeaks. 🐭 🦅
Also, that is mind boggling how much food the farm owners spend on "feeding" the rats per month. Over 1,000 pounds per month, not including wasted food, etc.
well they dont call them infestations for nothin! XD
And that is a very conservative number, in say its more tha quadrupled that amount.
Not even mentioning all the waste from feed bags being chewed into and the food that gets contaminated from the droppings
I can’t help imagining the experience from the rat’s perspective. The roof of your home is ripped away and you’re immediately set upon by a pack of enormous mouths.
It's almost like they feel as if they're getting attacked.. by titans... 👀
😅😅🤣
Lol that’s what they get

Alright, I am showing myself out.
Good luck!
Trapped all of them with livetraps only :) It was a great effort but it's possible, it took me 3 months.
