  • One of Peppermint Grove’s oldest homes is now one of the most contemporary with Humphrey Homes adding a large-scale addition to improve functionality and overall aesthetics.
    Affectionately called Bleak House, the original home was once owned by the Governor General and built in 1892. It has the highest possible heritage listing by the local council. We are humbled that the current owners entrusted Humphrey Homes to help transform a residence of this calibre.
    Its expansion included:
    Removing an existing 1970s addition on the ground floor at the rear of the home which visually overwhelms the original;
    Replacing the pitched roof from the existing second storey addition with a flat roof; and
    Adding a new second storey addition to the rear of the home, also with a flat roof to tie in visually to the new theme and provide a fresh, contemporary feel.
    It has been designed by Humphrey Homes' in-house architect and design team, which is led by Helen Marchesani. In keeping with heritage guidelines, the new design is clean and contemporary in nature so as to not confuse the integrity of the original building. The new works also included metal cladding and steel windows amongst other stunning materials in contrast with the traditional stone masonry building.
    The design is spatially contemporary and allows the new portion of the home to integrate with north-facing outdoor areas. It has been sited to best allow northern light to penetrate the main living areas and also careful to not overshadow or overwhelm neighbouring properties.
    The residence sees a cluster of living and entertaining spaces over two levels, plus an underground cellar. The lower floor houses the entertainment zones around an expansive outdoor area and includes open plan living and dining options, galley style kitchen with a scullery, feature arbour, outdoor terrace and pool at the rear. The front of the home boasts a decadent parents retreat with large master suite, dressing room ,ensuite, sitting room, study, gallery and library plus a guest suite with private ensuite and outdoor access. An additional four bedrooms and entertainment room are located on the upper floor.
    All architecture and building was completed by Humphrey Homes.
