Very nice, we had a rail and road combo bridge replacement over here in the US that took over 6 years of continuous construction so it's nice to see some successful accelerated bridge construction

It didn't go as well as it looks: The old viaduct was damaged during the piling work for the new one and traffic had to be diverted for much longer than planned.
I can’t believe they didn’t take that s curve out of the rail & road bridge on the opposite side to which it was filmed, a perfect chance to duplicate the track as as well. We all know it’s a single line, but when removing an old bridge is the perfect time to duplicate the track, making a modern loop at the same time and removing some curves at the same time is forward thinking.
@@MurrayJoe Are you from the UK? If you're not, as far as I'm aware restrictions in the UK, in general, are very stringent, especially in Snowdonia, a major national park and region. Changing the layout of the road would require several additional permissions, local authority and citizen planning, land surveying, environmental reports etc. The list goes on. Any work is extremely tedious in the UK, so 'if it works don't change it' is the general attitude here.

What was the reason for not doubling the rail and road capacity when they had the chance ? They could have straightened out the link and raised the deck to allow bigger boats to pass.
They did double the road capacity, it was a single lane with lights controls beforehand. There is also no need for doubling the rail track, as the whole line is single track with passing points. Lastly, there is no major navigation path for larger boats. The river (Afon Dwyrdy) does not have any destinations upstream and downstream it is mudflats.
This is an estuary. Depth is unlikely to be more than 20 feet at high tide. AT MOST. The average depth is less than 5 feet. Look at google maps and you can see the river is very shallow at this point.
There is actually a Train station right behind the corner right of cameras view and there is some elevation so making the track a bit longer makes sense
Normally there are TWO main concerns that dictate the curve (if any) of roads and bridges... What land is publicly owned and where is it structurally sound enough to support a road or bridge deck.
This flooding is caused by tidal waves (this is a bay of Irish Sea) Train route has sharp long curve (going around bay) so train speed is not high anyway. You can look for Llandecwyn at google maps for reference. (sorry for late reply)
Don't understand the uploader that shows things about assembling bridges or tunnels but at the end of the video does not show the end result for a few long seconds that we can be impressed - really not good.

My understanding of "Viaduct", is that it's an elevated structure over land. Where a "Bridge" connects two land masses separated by water or great height.
The arrangement of the land and surrounding property did not make it economically feasible to alter the alignment of the tracks or road. The gentle curves did not greatly affect linespeed and are exaggerated in this film

There is actually a pedestrian path to the right of the carriageway. With regards to cycling, I would agree with you if you would expect a high volume of cycling in this area, but there won't and will never be. This is such a remote place, and with low volumes of motor traffic, it is more reasonable to not implement cycling provisions and let them use the whole carriageway. It may not be perfect, but it's a good compromise considering how many cyclists use it.

@@dadcanufixit We will have lost a lot of money where we could have built much more useful cycling infrastructure which will be used by more people. The population of the area is very small, and, as a cyclist myself, I wouldn't cycle here even if there was a dedicated path. The nearest connection from Penrhyndeudraeth over the bridge is over 8 km away, and we start to get to a point that cycling to Harlech is unappealing even given good infrastructure. Surely, rather than building a cycling bridge to nowhere, it would be better to build useable cycling infrastructure where it will be used. Personally, with the volume of traffic on the road, I'd happily cycle on it anyways (although I understand some wouldn't)
@@pedalwerk I am playing devils advocate here. In my village the council just gave £92k to the village football club. They have used the money to upgrade their facilities. All very good, except when you analyse it what they have done is built a fence around where my kids and others used to play. So in effect they invested in less facilities for the future. There are less than a handful of locals now playing for the team so we loose out all ways. If they insist on spending money like this then a big of national cycle infrastructure is peanuts tbh

This project was problematic from the start. The contractor did not carry out sufficient hydraulic modelling of the temporary state of the river during the works. For that reason the river altered its flow during the works and created a scouring current around the very large power transmission pylon which was situated in the mouth of the river a few hundred metres off the position of the bridge. The washout caused the pylon to be undermined and they had to stop work in order for the pylon to be emergency demolished and the power lines rerouted. It was a disaster narrowly averted and a big cost to the project. Our team bid for the works against hochtief but did not win as were too expensive........ however, we were aware of the dangers and included alot of hydraulic modelling in out bid...... hmmmmm. Leave that one with you.....

Except that they have really good engineers and a big experience the last years. That's true that it doesn't take too long build up, if you checked out in the above Video, the company named Hochtief is a German. In Germany takes too long for constructions such as these, no only for bridges and roads but also for houses (which the most of them are crap and really expensive).

Curves are more pleasing to the eye than straight. Plus on curved roads it’s easier to subconsciously gauge the speed of other vehicles.

A viaducts is a type of bridge that is made of multiple spans. I think this bridge qualifies as a viaduct.
