Stan Smith disliked Ion Tiriac because he felt that Tiriac displayed bad sportsmanship and tried to cheat in the Davis Cup against him. Tiriac used every trick in the book to try to rattle Smith in Romania, hopefully they have buried the hatchet.

For example, that symbolic title granted by the Club Steaua Bucharest, during the time of the dictator Ceausescu, to Ilie Nastase (the rank of major general), was well preserved even after the fall of Ceausescu. So Mr. Ilie Nastase receives a pension as a general as well.
