That was not a Ted Cook install, must have been a new hire. L/line looked like shit low voltage was garbage, at least turn the wire nuts so the tops are up, and obviously no walk through after the install. Thanks for the video, and I am 100% positive you will correct it. Keep up the good work!
So true about filters and to make this particular house an example of lack of maintenance, those new returns that have the filter in the ceiling are the most convenient ones to change and monitor ! Folks really need to have a case of filters on hand and simply change filters every summer and winter as a rule if they don't want to inspect them now and then. They must run that upper system all of the time...it's truly dirty for less than two years of use.
People don't think about how important airflow is for a unit to work. The craziest setup I've seen was in a million dollar house back in the late 90's. The upstairs unit was a 3 ton system. It had 2 returns run with 12 inch flex duct. The problem was that the air had to go up a wall chase that was 2 by 14 inches for each return. The installer couldn't figure out why the unit would ice up in less than an hour if it was running constantly. If they ran the fan full time they could run the AC for about half an hour at a time and keep it from freezing but that wouldn't keep it cool once the outside temperature reached 80.
Can airflow issues cause a fan to vibrate? When heating, the fan on my system will get noisy. But if the fan is "on" (running on full power, I guess), then the vibrating stops.
Uncle ted i had a trane AC outdoor that was modified to work with a standing pilot furnace and that trane ran for over 30 years. I just had it changed out last year to a 90%. All we needed was a few gas and go's and we were good.
Yeah I'm stressing over my air filter with increased pollen in the air. I have a basic filter which works great for air flow but sucks for cleaning the air of pollen. I think the MERV 8 filter drops the pressure too much and makes the AH work harder.
Look into getting a Solace Air cleaner. Thats what i always reccomend at my work as an HVAC technician, and i have one installed in my home. find a company that installs them. They work like a swiffer by using a fiberglass media pumped full of electricity, will catch down to .3 microns and below, and has amazing air flow. you only gotta change the media every 3 months and it costs like 80 - 100 dollars yearly for medias. heres a video th-cam.com/video/uIJW0g_PCOc/w-d-xo.html
I don’t like it either, especially because the wire nuts were upside down acting like a dish for water to collect in. I’d at least wrap them in electrical tape to keep water out.
Hey Ted, what Merv rating would you say is best? I work in the desert southwest, a very dusty place. A LOT of guys recommend Merv 1 filters for “optimal air flow & performance”. Seems like i come across many jobs with dirty coils & customers are ALWAYS using those cheap filters. Yet people argue with me when I tell them those filters are garbage in a place like southern Arizona.
Home Depot has the Rheem FPR 4 air filters that are really good. They fit snug to. You can get a 3 pack for $9.99. I change them monthly. I’ve found that these are a good balance of airflow and filtering. Just my opinion.
I think you should get the best filtration that you can, if there's duct work problems though you gotta lower your merv rating down but then you might get a plugged up coil because your filter isn't catching enough. It's a double edge sword and difficult question unless you have really good ductwork. I like the 4 inch aprilaire merv13s personally
@@josiahpierson3636 You're right! 4 inch filters are the way to go. At least a MERV 11. You should also oversize the return filter box/grill. And make sure your return duct(s) are correctly sized and installed. Flex duct is supposed to be pulled straight and taut with metal duct for direction changes.
Ted why do I see so many Wire Nuts, like at time stamp 1:08, turned the wrong way, with the open side up, so that it would let in any & all water into that wire nut.
climbing in the attic, up ladder to ceiling or down in basement, crawlspace and other hard to get places will equate to them never being changed. they should all be placed about waist to head level, with large label change filter every 30 days.. but the yuppies and suckers would whine and cry, waah they're ugly there and so noticeable!!!!
What would be a good filter to use in a mobile home that has a package ac unit for just the ac system because it's a floor return for the package ac unit
@3:15 -- screw the caps, I'd FIRE whoever splice that condenser wire outside the electrical compartment like that with the wire nuts FACING DOWN like little funnels....ZERO common sense.
Ted, as an armchair quarterback, I just have to ask about the thermostat wire on the condensing unit. Why would the connections be made outside the electrical panel? The wire nuts being upside down, will hold water like a thimble, and that wire isn't UV protected. I know mixing HV and LV wiring in that compartment isn't the best either but I would think in the long run the cabling will corrode much quicker being in the elements. 😎👍
Wow he changes filters when he changes smoke detector batteries. And the cheap blue ones too? I'm changing mine every month to 2 months. Can make a sweater with the stuff on that filter its so thick.
I found a super restrictive air filter in a return grill and I was told by the customer that his doctor recommended it. I asked if the doctor was a mechanical engineer and recommended a lighter filter.
Obviously It is a Heat Pump so with TRANE if you have a TAM air handler with the blower profile set to ENHANCED for better dehumidification, you have to let it run a while so that the blower cycles through the 50 80 100 ramping profile to properly evaluate the refrigerant charge. First 1.5 mins 50% speed, next 7 at 80% then 100% speed. Now TRANE sets the charge by designed SUBCOOL, BUT you still need to be checking SUPERHEAT to determine whether you have an air flow issue or metering problem! Your SUBCOOL may be on the money but if your SUPERHEAT IS LOW OR HIGH WHILE YOUR SUBCOOL IS GOOD that will tell you where to look! ALWAYS CHECK SUPERHEAT AND SUBCOOLING WHEN EVALUATING THE REFRIGERANT CHARGE, JUST BECAUSE YOUR SUBCOOL IS GOOD DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM! ALSO ALWAYS CHECK YOUR STATIC ACROSS THE DUCT SYSTEM, TO QUANTIFY YOUR AIR FLOW! SIMPLE WAY TO RULE OUT AIRFLOW ISSUES! NOTICE HIS GAUGES, HE IS NOT CHECKING SUPERHEAT! IF YOU ARE GOING TO THE TROUBLE OF HOOKING UP GAUGES, ESPECIALLY DIGITAL GAUGES, IT ONLY TAKES 10 MORE SECONDS TO HOOK UP THE SUCTION LINE TEMP CLAMP TO READ SUPERHEAT! BUT AS YOU HAVE SEEN, TED INSTALLED TRANE'S CHEAP LOW END METAL CABINET AIR HANDLER AND DID NOT COMMUNICATE PROPERLY TO THE HOMEOWNER, WHEN THE UNIT WAS INSTALLED, THAT HE STILL NEEDED A FILTER IN THE ORIGINAL RETURN GRILL!
I wish I was as smart as you !! but anyway...Why all the caps ? Regardless of your superior opinions ..... I can not force a homeowner to buy a particular product... They were quoted 3 options as always, 14,16, and 20... it is their money !! If I had my way I would never install anything but 20 S.E.E.R. systems everywhere.
@@TedCookHVAC We also offer the same options, 14(soon to be 15) 16 18 and 20, they all come with a TAM air handler, have not used the metal cabinet at all unless it is a rental for a slumlord looking to be dirt cheap, But most of them usually get a Tempstar or another cheap ICP..!
You are incorrect sir. The AH in the video is a variable speed TEM6 model and it actually increases the S.E.E.R. Of the system and is a rated match. You’re obviously not a Trane dealer.

He changed the filter every 10 years with the smoke detector whether it needed it or not.
Gotta wonder how well his car is running right now?
Tier 1 makes some good 5 inch filters that mount in those 1 inch registers. They are a great option without having to replace the registers.
Great video Ted. Thanks for the upload. Love the weather shots!

When I have cold weather I cover part of the condenser so I can get proper readings.
Great
That would drive me insane would put my filters at the unit lol not much attic work here in Alberta
Awesome video !
Wow, just wow. Out of sight out of mind. For most people it goes far beyond just air filters. You'll always have a job Ted..
tractor & combine cab filters get that plugged wrecks txv
I don't like seeing low voltage wiring outside the OD unit. Thanks for sharing
It makes no difference.

Do you carry all sorts of sizes of filters on your truck?
I prefer hard ducting. They’re better for less restrictions right?

A clean crawlspace or a cool attic.

Why didn’t y’all put a filter in if y’all installed the return
Ive never seen a filter look like that. Those people have some serious dust issues.

I change mine out every 2 months
The deactivated one is an ok reason but how does he justify that cake of a 20x25
Giveaways coming back uncle Ted?
Up flows in an attic? That’s a first for me!!
Can't stop a Lennox! 😆👌
So which filter do you recommend?
The cheap ones. Dont block the flow with those hyperallergenic BS
That was the fur coat right there.
Why not just put a single filter box on the furnace instead of on each return?
I am surprised that you didn't put your Temp Sensor on the Suction Line to see what the Super Heat was.
That's as dirty of a filter as I think I've ever seen. Amazing homeowners can let them get like that. I change mine out every 3 months.
Me too.
Best to change it when it gets dirty
Wow!!! That filter hasn’t been changed since you installed it in 2020. That was bad right there my goodness!

Yes sir
You've got a hawk. I bring a wing man haha
How is it that the " Low Voltage " wiring is on the outside of the unit 😳 jeez
got to say the installers wonrth up to Tranes certified board Pros...😂

Correct me if I'm wrong but was the outside unit a 36 (3 ton) and the indoor a 30 (2.5 ton) Anyone else see that?
Nevermind... I looked at the entire model of the air handler. Works great..
Love to see them re use those old wire nuts and not trim the stat wire

Good video information but could have been about 5 minutes shorter.
Hi Ted I don’t know you can handle knee down on the gravel like that definitely knee pads for me take care
Those rocks are the worst on the knees
Yes. Ive poped bursa sacks that way. (Bursitis) its painful.
maybe it went into alarm in heat.
Seeing filters like that is all too common unfortunately.
i clean air ducts and so many ppl have rly dirty filters or shitty ones lol
Those are high ceiling I hope those houses come with ladders.
Woohoo, my job gets a little shout out. 🎉
If they kept their house cleaner the filter wouldn't look like that!
I mean filters are $10 I change mine every 3-4 weeks!
Some people expect a miracle when all they needed was to change filters lol
I hope your getting paid for all that work for the customers neglect cause I'm sure it was explained to him properly about what was what ..
You must have steel knees
Add a 5” filter rack and move on.
I don't understand how people can afford a house like that but have no common sense.
