5 years later, this match appears unique when you think how Nole still dominates the tour... Chung played very fast with few erros whereas Djoko was clearly not in his best shape (so many forehand mistakes and slow serves hampered by his elbow injury)
Chung displayed a magnificent performance against Djokovic which I feel even Djokovic would not have expected. The angles at which Chung was returning was truly incredible which even Champion players don't easily do so !! To beat Djokovic at his favourite surface & that too in straight sets was something which no one would have thought of. If he would have continued like this, he could have won multiple grand slam titles but no clue about where he is now ?

I thought that too, but watching the highlights again I think he was made to look better than he is because Djokovic played without a proper serve. The serve is the most important shot in tennis.

Not only did Chung knock out Djokovic, he also knocked out Agassi from his job as Djokovic's coach! You might say Chung is the first guy to bowl over Novak AND Andre!
Sadly this match took a major toll on Chung and he fell to Fed in the next round. As good as Chung was, even at full health he would have had a hard time getting past Fed's ultra aggressive attacking game and his 2.0 backhand. In that match, Fed overwhelmed Chung's mediocre serve and gave him no time to wind up his defensive game.
Chung had nothing to lose, he played calmly and relaxed, just like Istomin, who also sensationally beat Djokovic a year earlier. I don't connect these two defeats, but they are about the same. Chung attacked and defended well, used shortened ones, most importantly did not make blunders, like most of Djokovic's rivals. The victory is more than deserved.
Djokovic has only ever been down by 2 sets to love at AO three times in his career. First was that 6-0 6-2 6-1 loss to Safin in 1R in 2005 at his first ever slam appearance. The second was vs Federer in 2007 when Fed was unstoppable at majors off clay (2006-2007 Roger won 6 out of 8 slams, only losses were both FO finals to Rafa). The third time Novak was down 0-2 in sets at AO was here vs Chung. In this match Novak was still dealing with that elbow issue that ruined most of his 2017 season, yet all three sets here were still so close. Even when he is not healthy he is so incredibly tough to beat at AO. Won the 2021 title with an abdominal tear too. And 2023 on a hamstring tear, producing arguably the highest level of tennis ever seen at AO. Terrifying stuff.
