They're definitely gay, but it wasn't a 'yaoi' anime by any stretch. It was primarily a science-fiction/mystery sort of anime with the main characters just so happening to be gay, whereas with yaoi the relationships are always unhealthy, have lots of dubcon/rape, huge age differences, and are really just unhealthy representations of homosexuality in anime imo. I liked how Shion and Nezumi were portrayed in this anime, and I wish there were more gay characters like them in anime rather than just offensive stereotypes.
Lol thank you for doing that heart thing to it, it brought me back to this video so now I've favourited it and I get to enjoy it again :D And yeah, Japan isn't the worst when it comes to being accepting of gay and LGBT folk, but I feel like they often use them as plot devices in anime a lot, or have those weird unrealistic qualities like I said in the other comment. I hope we get more anime like this one for gay people!

Maybe all of Shion’s problems could have been avoided if he didn’t let Nezumi into his house that night. I mean that guy almost killed Shion a few times. And besides, he should have been real careful on who he lets into his house, what if Nezumi broke into to rob him or even kill his family.
