From my experience, you get more crystals if you do a 1:1 ratio of water to urea. 100ml of water should be 100g of urea, 50ml water:50g urea, 500ml water:500g urea, etc. The rest of your process is spot on those. Warm the water to help the urea dissolve and a drop of dish soap to help is spread across the surface
@@anthony_trillanes the way it works is, you put a first coat down of what ever bright/reflective paint/primer you want (the crystals dont stick to metal too well on their own and will make the piece look patchy when you wipe them away), cover it in the crystals, let them dry, then do a light dusting of your black paint over top. You dont have to go on heavy with the black, you want to allow the crystals to aid in the "shading". The crystals are water soluble, so you dont need to sand them hard or with any rough abrasive, a wet sponge will do the trick. What happens is, the paint adheres to the crystals and when you wipe them away, it reveals the bright/reflective base underneath. The thicker the crystal, the more black paint will adhere to it. The thinner the crystal area, the greater chance the paint will adhere to the base coat instead and thats what gives you the shading effect.
Hello thank for the video do you use the solution on the just base coat only or I can use it on base coat with clear coat to get the chrystal thank you again
Another video a guy said use some alcohol in the mix to get the smaller tighter shapes, as the alcohol evaporates to cause the oxidisation to happen faster, setting off smaller clusters.. does that make sense to any one.
Hi there , yes when add water, the solution react and temperature drops, tha's why you have t to heat the water. You can make simple, just add "heated" water in a water bottle 500ml in a half of urea and shake it until all been disolved. That's it!
I picked up some urea from the hardware store. It came in pellets and is not completely white. Its urea by a company called Espoma. Any idea if this stuff will suffice?
It takes minimal effort really to set it all up and try it. Idea start there first then of it doeant give you the desired outcome look for answers. 🤷♂️ If its Urea it should work. If its granulated try breaking it up into a powder. In thinking the only disadvantage will be the time it takes to break it down in the water. The bigger the granules/ pellets, the longer it will take too dissolve. You cant just use more heat to do it either because it will evaporate the Urea. Try breaking it up and fallowing his steps here. Good luck
Hey, this is a pretty cool trick and it saves some money I bet, for those on a budget. One question, does heating it when drying make the crystals grow differently or in a tighter pattern or do they grow the same way air drying or heat drying ? Thanks for the info on how to make it.
I tried this and got really bland crystal effects. The dish soap is essential so that it doesn't bead up, but i got really small crystal patterns, even when heating up and letting air dry How do i make sure those crystals get big and Chunky?
How did you get the crystal solution to stick to the silver paint? Mine just keeps beading on the surface even sanding the paint with 800 grit. I did 1:1 ratio with 3 drops of dish soap. It's probably the silver paint I am using (Rustoleum enamel). It is oil-based, so it probably does not let water stick to it 🤔.
not really, heating it up is to just to increase the solubility of the urea. use a 1:1 ratio of urea and water, so 100ml water use 100g of urea. for best results use ox gall, or any other good surfactants.
