  • In this video, you will learn how to identify the most common CALLS and SOUNDS of the American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos).
Please make sure to "like" this ID video and SUBSCRIBE to @BirdWatchingHQ . Check out the LIVE bird and animal cameras streaming from my backyard.
Although they are not known for their beautiful voices, American Crows make a WIDE variety of sounds. They are even known to mimic other birds!
In this video, you will learn the THREE calls you're most likely to hear.
00:13 SOUND #1: "caw, caw, caw"
The most common sound from an American Crow
is a loud, repeated “caw, caw, caw,” which can have many variations.
Typically, American Crows will thrust their heads up and down as they make this call.
Groups of crows will often gather and call together, which can become quite loud! There are sometimes hundreds of birds in these “murders.”
    00:43 SOUND #2: The rattle
Another common noise that American Crows make is a loud rattle. These rattles and clicks are typically made when communicating with other crows.
    01:00 SOUND #3: "ko-aw"
"Ko-aw" is the best way to describe the last call we will review today. You will often hear it intermixed with other vocalizations, such as the "caw, caw, caw."

I have a male/female pair that come every morning and at lunch time. The female “caw caw caws” for me at 7:45 am. She sits on top of my stucco wall. I walk out and greet her with, “Good Morning, crows!” I place unsalted pecan halves on the top of the wall. I must walk inside before they will eat. Afterwards: She will rattle call her hubby. He flies over and lands on my wall. She lets him eat the pecans at first. I have grown to care deeply for them. I do believe they follow me around the block. They have brought me three presents. I really like them.

4 years I fed a crow with a partially broken wing unable to fly far mostly sidestepped down the block on power lines. Her two offspring protected and hunted for her. One morning I heard loud caring outside about 50 crows on wires above my house. She introduced entire family to me. They played around for 20 minutes then flew off. She passed away and her offspring with their babies continue to visit everyday for treats. One stays with me in the garden to enjoy the grubs I dig up. So intelligent I am greeted by crows all around my city. Always have a bag of peanuts in my car to share.

Crows never forget a face. The crow you helped wanted to introduce you to her family to let them know that you're a good person for them to be around. They'll never forget your kindness

this is interesting because i regularly feed two crows and live about a mile away from where i feed them. ive recently noticed crows making the normal sounds but very close by where i live. i assume its different crows because i cant imagine them following me, but maybe that is possible?

Each breeding pair of crows has an established home territory where they build nests and raise their young. Urban territories are about 10 acres, but rural territories are much larger.
So where you live could still be in their territory.

They are always talking to me on my daily woodland hikes. Since I tend to hit the same trails routinely for the past 10 years, they know me and are always following me thru the woods. It's my favorite part of hiking❤

    • @cattailer1077

@@cherie4868 ....absolutely. 10 years go I was hiking alone on a woodland foot trail and the crows were carrying on and following me as
usual. I decided to change Course and proceeded to follow a remote trail and within minutes they started making this wispy really weird sound in union ith each other and then they went quiet. I looked up and they were all sitting in the tree tops looking down. Shivers went up my spine and I knew something was very wrong. I decided to trust their warning, turned around and ran as fast as I could back down to the main trail. They had followed me, and Within seconds, they started their usual cute chatter and I knew I was safe. It was quite an experience and I'll never forget it!🥰

I once had a home with 10 huge Douglas Firs (I live in Seattle). I fed my family of crows every day. They ate communally as a group, waiting patiently until the squirrels left. This was when I brought out their special treats- which included blueberries. I started receiving gifts from them- a discarded mouse from a computer, pilfered items from garbage cans ( something shiny typically) and sometimes a quarter. They are amazing, and I have read that they are actually the 4th smartest animal. I don't doubt it- their use of tools is amazing and their face recognition has been proven by the U of Washington.

I'll never forget this as long as I live. It was 1968, and I was 9 years old, and playing In the backyard of the house we were living in at Sherman Oaks. There was a tree and a big black crow, it might have been a raven regardless. I heard with my own ears, this bird speak the words "Mommy" more than once. So naturally, many decades later when we didn't have a source of information at hand in our pocket, like Captain Kirk had, like we do today called a smartphone. The thought popped in my head at my late age, and I looked it up on my search engine. Sure enough, those big black crows, or like I said it might have been a raven. They talk. Absolutely amazing! Thank you for the 3 different calls these very beautiful highly intelligent birds are frequently capable of making 😁

I have a small group of Crows, 6-8, that I feed regularly. When I have food for them, I go outside and call them. Weird as it is, I just say " caw caw" a time or two and they do respond. They hear me and are there in no time... They know food is there, and they prefer anything orangey. (cheetos especially) I have heard the first two calls but never the third.

From south-west British Columbia, Canada beside the Fraser River and a mile away from the Pacific Ocean: We get many versions of the first two sounds of Crows that you have cited but I have never heard the third call here. We get large American Crows and have also seen the bird that used to be called 'Fish Crows', a smaller version of the American Crow that prefers to stay together in a small group (family?) and is seen mostly in bays around the sea as they spend a lot of time scavenging in inter-tidal zones.

I've been leaving peanuts on my fence for the last few months and there's one crow who comes regularly. I just started seeing him take them, before he'd wait for me to go inside. A couple days ago, I put some down and started walking away and he immediately flew down to them and made something close to sound #3, then grabbed them and flew off. It felt like something of a "thank you" but I can't say for certain.

I'm from Australia. The crows and magpies over there make some awesome calls. I didn't really pay attention to the crows in America. Now I live in San Francisco and we've been feeding birds (and inadvertently, squirrels) on our deck. We get different sizes of crows. one is really big with a great big hooked beak and huge claws. This crow is clever and not shy (not any more anyway). His calls are quite varied and often involve clacking his beak and puffing his chest feathers. Can I include a photo here? Maybe I can add a sound too? Not sure how to do either

I came here to identify the reason for a sound a crow was making that I've never heard. I didn't find it here but my instincts told me she lost her young or something. Unless it was a mating call. But I feel it was searching or sad. There were two other crows next to it making normal crow sounds.

I moved here to Miamisburg in 2019 from Western Washington, and I have to say, I'm surprised by the LACK of crows here. Neighbors on NextDoor have told me they tend to hang out down at the Great Miami River, just down the road from me. I absolutely love crows & ravens, and unfortunately I don't see them very often here. I actually see more eagles & hawks than crows! And TBH, I've never ever heard that third call, the "ko-aw" if I remember how you spelled it. Not once. Is it maybe a call eastern crows have?

I feed my local crows peanuts and meats, but after reading the comments, I’m gonna try pecans too. They definitely love their nuts. I never heard the third one. But a few times I heard their warning call they make when facing a perceived threat. Unfortunately, at me. One time I happened to be walking too close to a nest I didn't know was there. Gained trust later as fledglings grew. The other was in the parking lot going to work. Normally, we get along, so I've no clue what the issue was that day.

I've heard the first two but not the third. One that I hear I assume is the females, because it's usually one bird(not used in that group consensus chatter), it reminds me of the squirrel in heat sound, like a soft honking but kind of sounds like distress.

Mine make the Caw caw caw, then one always makes a warble song sort of, then the last one you would see as is a baby crying or other times a cat meowing.
Never heard the other sounds listed here.

Within the 'caw caw caw' are nuances of length and stridency.

I have a small murder of crows that collects wayward chicken scratch. One morning one of the crows started caw-caw routine- however this particular morning the chickens began to make alarm sounds- I could not tell if the chickens were wary of the crows- or if the crow had alerted the chickens to a different threat. Any ideas?

I have this crow that sees me at work and it makes almost like a cat meow sound when it sees me. I have no clue what it means, but it does it every time it sees me, and only me. Not any of my corowrkers. And it will follow me around the work property

Whenever I see a crow cowing at me I know something really bad is about to happen. I end up getting bad news that a family member has passed away. I saw one this morning in my backyard and he kept cowing at me I hope and pray it’s nothing bad and their won’t be another loss in my family. I do not need that right now. 😢😢😢

I’ve been feeding them for about 3-years now mostly peanuts, cat food, and dead mice and chipmunks I trap in mouse traps around the barns. I also feed the song birds year round. Like a lot of you when I’ve got something like a dead mouse or two I will call them for about 30 minutes then I’ll walk across an acre of open yard to the spot and usually in another 30 minutes one will come in followed by 2 then 4 then the whole gang. My question is I’ve herd twice now from what might be the same individual a short “caw” followed by a two note whistle and it seems to be directed at me personally has anyone herd something similar? and if so what was the situation?

I've been trying for two years to get the crows that hang around in the pine trees near me to know me. Unfortunately, the squirrels decided my morning unsalted peanuts in shells were for them! I don't know what sort of a bird feeder to use for these crows. I have a fence but it's HOA and I cant attach anything. Any suggestions?? Edit; I've heard all 3 of these sounds. I love to listen to their chatter!

Try talking to the crows! Make sure they see you leaving the peanuts out, and try to talk to them when you do. Be sure to leave them at the same time once a week so they know your food source is reliable and worth the effort. Whenever you see them, talk to them. They’re very smart and will pick up on the fact that you’re talking to them and will realize you’re leaving the peanuts for them. Only took one week for mine to come back at the same day/time each week, but I happened to be outside to talk to mine and let them know the peanuts were for them. Now they follow me around the block on morning walks to protect me from dog walkers across the street. 🤭

@@th-xk7bv I talk to them every time I see them, but honestly, it's not that often. I call them my crowbies. My neighbors probably wonder why they hear crow calls once in awhile when the crows aren't around. I found a good TH-cam crow calling that they respond to, periodically. I'll keep trying. It's such a treat when I do get to see them. ❤️
